This book will be one I return to several times, because if you're not mindful of what you're reading, you'll miss the point of whole paragraphs. The language is easy to read, but the details are incredible in relation to concepts that might be new to a lot of people. We visit the various psychological obstacles in regards to our sense of thing ownership, and the challenges on the myopic level within the home are convincingly difficult. All in all, it's complicated and I don't easily retain most info, but I found it very engaging and was often surprised by her good sense of humor. This may be one of those books on organizing that stands out the most for me, and I've read several full length books on the subject many times over.

I enjoy reading books about organization...and part of my former clutter was a collection of these books. I've read serious psychology, books about hoarding, how-to's that tell you what to keep and how to keep it. But this book is just terrific, even while it doesn't order you to keep or toss any particular item, and doesn't advocate a line of products (or "junk bunkers", as one writer calls them) to store your Stuff. Instead, it helps you understand why you have your stuff to begin with; what psychological purpose does every little piece of paper or flea market bargain or duplicate sweater serve? Once you understand what your Things mean to you, you are emotionally free to choose whether to hold onto them or part with them. It's this underlying information that makes all the difference. Since I first read this book, I have gotten rid of an incredible amount of stuff, and I haven't missed any of it. All my closets, drawers, shelves and files are organized, yet I didn't need a single one of my organizing books to manage this. All I needed was to understand why I owned what I owned...then I was able to look at all these Things rationally and see what I needed, what I used, and what no longer fit my life and had to leave. I recommend this book to anyone who feels anxiety at the thought of dealing with their accumulation of clutter, or who feels deprived at the prospect of buying less, or who is just plain angry at how Things have taken over their valuable time and space.

I've read a lot of 'How To' books regarding holding on to things in my life that I really don't need. And a lot of those books are informative and have helped me along the way. However THIS book is a winner. The concepts are fresh, easy to execute & is a fast read. Worried about becoming a hoarder? Read this... it's really made me think about the simplification of my life in a new way.

Found this book interesting and really quite helpful by broadening my approach to clutter, material objects, or what she refers to as "things". After reading this, you should realize that most organizing books are really only dealing with the tip of the iceberg. Even if it is completely melted, more ice will bob up again before you know it.My house is neat, but I had this nagging feeling that I was hanging on to too many things for not good enough of a reason. She made me think about the often knee-jerk decisions I make about getting, keeping, saving, and inevitably storing things. More than anything, this book will broaden your thinking about the why behind the everyday decisions you make about your relationship to the objects in your life.

The explanations about the "why" we hold on to Things is enlightening. I am learning as I go through the pages and I feel motivated to actually get control of not only the clutter, but my life.... There are philosophies about why we collect and store Things, and why we keep them around long after they are useful or worth anything. I didn't know that. I have been thinking I'm lazy or just not organized. Turns out I just might be angry at myself about something or other. Very interesting book. I recommend it to anyone who is trying to declutter your house, as well as guidance to feel better about yourself.

Are you the type of person who wants someone to tell them how to organize, what's the best method for storing this, that, or the other thing, and what you should get rid of? Are you someone who wants someone else to put an organizational system in place for you so you don't have to think about it? If so, grab another book. There's plenty of them out there, and I'm sure you'll find one with an approach and a system you can live with. But I'm the kind of person who has Things. I'm the kind of person who is driven up the wall by professional organizers whose mantra is "get rid of it - decluttering is key to successful organization!" I'm the kind of person who, by and large, likes my Things but sometimes feels overwhelmed. I'm the kind of person who needs a certain amount of chaos to spark my creativity. I'm the kind of person with ADD who will focus on what I'm doing wrong, who spends a lot of mental energy thinking about what I *should* do, who thinks I have to do it all, and do it all at once. In short, I'm the kind of person this book was written for.I want to understand how I differentiate between Things and things, why I acquire more Things, and how I let Things pile up. I want to understand how to own my Things instead of having them own me or feel overwhelmed by them. Books that tell me I'll never be successfully organized unless I get rid of my Things don't work for me. If all I need to do is get rid of my things so that there is very little to organize, why do I need an organizer? And where is the organizer going to be when, a week after I've "decluttered" and gotten rid of my Things, I'm sitting there making plans to get more Things or crying because some Things are gone and I'm sorry I let them go? Unless I understand my relationship with Things, I will never be successful at being organized, and I'll never find a system that works for me. I know, because I've tried numerous times to be "more organized." I read the books, I try this system or that, and I do get more organized -- for about a month or 2 or 3. And then it all falls apart, and I'm tired of that.Glovinsky's book gives the structure to develop this understanding so that I can put a good system together once and for all. The exercises in this book have given me a lot of insight, and Glovinsky's non-judgmental approach has increased my willpower to do what I need to do with that insight. I still have a ways to go, but I'm well on my way to cutting my Thing habits and creating to an organizational that will work for me not only for the next 2-3 months, but for a very long time. Am also planning on getting the companion book to this one to make things even easier. Thanks, Ms. Glovinsy, and my mother thanks you, too!
