One thing that comes to mind when reading this book is "Jerry McGuire" as the character in that movie opposes the status quo in search of real meaning and of leading people who are true fans/followers.Other takeaways from the book: A leader of a tribe does not get permission, or follow rules, or wait to be asked - a leader just does it. A tribe follows that leader because the leader is passionate about what they are doing/creating and/or where they are going.A tribe is not a "hierarchy" that is found in some companies with higher and higher levels of position. With a tribe, the more you want in, the more you are in.

Two different things: a crowd is a tribe without a leader. A crowd is a tribe without communication. Most organizations spend their time marketing to the crowd. Smart organizations assemble the tribe. Crowds are interesting, and they can create all sorts of worthwhile artifacts and market effects. But tribes are longer lasting and more effective.”There are a lot of great books out there but this is a must.

I found this to be a very inspirational book on the topic of daring to be a leader. It makes you see leaders can come in a variety of forms, they are not just made up of outgoing, exceptionally outspoken people standing in front of a crowd talking loud, being the center of attention. They can be a person in the background, creating a way for like-minded people to connect and move a cause forward. It makes you see that a person with a vision, an idea, a cause, can make real change, and why it's important to get going on what matters to you and stop waiting for the perfect time, as the time is now.I like that most of the topics are short and to the point. He doesn't ramble on. He gives you an idea and you take it from there. He doesn't give you a step by step manual on how to lead, he gives a concept of how tribes work and you as a leader work it out from there.Super fun book. Joined his email list as greatly enjoy his daily emails on variety of thoughts.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to make a difference. Anyone who is sick and tired of standing by watching things happen to them and is ready for a change. I consider this more of a "messaging and inspiration" piece than anything with definitive steps to building a brand or setting yourself out there as a leader. It's a lot of him doing his Seth Godin thing, which is sorta ruminating on stories he's heard, people he's met, ideas that have come to him in the middle of the night. Very short little chapters that seem meant to get your mind grapes juicing, but don't expect anything concrete to work with.

One of the best of Seth Godin's books -- this one is the inspirational blueprint for making a difference in the world. It's got a few business references that are now outdated given that the book was written almost 10 years ago but the principles of how we operate as human beings hasn't changed. Seth captures the essence of what it means to connect and create meaning as a group. I bought several copies of this and gift it to others regularly.

Either vague from a cooking stand point, or including ingredients that are definitely not allowed for that particular phase. Example: I saw pumpkin, heavy cream, and other "use sparingly in Phase 3"-type ingredients in recipes listed as Phase 1. "Beef strips" was an ingredient for one recipe, which really does nothing to help people who aren't familiar with cooking (it was a stir-fry recipe).Overall this is a pretty weak book, for both starting the South Beach Diet AND as a cookbook.

It was a waste of my money, but someone else may really like it.

This volume is the catalogue that accompanied the exhibition of the same name at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., from October 2011 to January 2012, and it is a welcome little addition to the literature on Degas and the dance. I say "little" because the book is in small format (8"x10.8") and only 144 pages and obviously does not compare to (nor was it meant to) the much more comprehensive catalogues of Jill DeVonyar and Richard Kendall for the "Degas and the Dance" exhibition in Detroit and Philadelphia in 2002 and 2003, or for the "Degas and the Ballet: Picturing Movement" show from September to December 2011 at the Royal Academy of the Arts in London. Instead, it concentrates on one of The Phillips's star attractions, Degas's "Dancers at the Barre" (ca. 1900) and some other works in that painting's immediate artistic environment. A necessary course of conservation (the first since Duncan Phillips acquired the canvas in 1944) led to such insights into Degas's processes and methods--he worked and reworked the painting virtually obsessively over a period of more than fifteen years--that the curators decided to make it the centerpiece of a show and gathered about thirty other works in various media from other collections to put the "Dancers" into a wider context. All these works and many comparison illustrations are excellently reproduced and make the book a visual delight.Eliza Rathbone, Chief Curator at the Collection, writes (in an essay aptly subtitled "Years in the Making") about the evolution of the painting as it was changed and varied, conforming always to Degas's evolving aesthetic concerns and preoccupations until, in its final form, it epitomized some thirty years of work on the subject of dancers in oil, printmaking, sculpture and, increasingly, pastel. This is followed by Elizabeth Steele's report on the examination of the painting through stereomicroscopy, x-radiography and infrared reflectology, i.e., the various technical tools the conservator has at her hands to peer beneath the surface and reveal all the changes in attitude, position, posture, etc. that Degas made in his quest for the perfect expression. There is an essay on "Degas as Sculptor," with special reference to the dance sculptures in the exhibition, and an interview conducted by the ballet critic Robert Grescovic with the renowned dancer and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon on the latter's reactions to Degas's ballet paintings. The volume concludes with a short consideration of the other Degas pieces in the Phillips collection and the results of their technical analysis, a handy chronology of the artist's life, a checklist with specifications of all the exhibited works and catalogue illustrations, and a selected bibliography. About the Author

John Holloway earned an MFA in scenery design from Trinity University in 1980 after a residency at the Dallas Theater Center. That landmark building is the only theatre built by Frank Lloyd Wright during his lifetime. The DTC was well known for producing new plays by emerging playwrights. While at the Theatre Center, he designed scenery for the original production of "Remember" written by Preston Jones, author of the three 1976 Broadway plays making up "The Texas Trilogy". John worked as a staff designer at the Oklahoma Theater Center for two years before accepting a teaching position at Niagara University in New York. In 1983, he began teaching stagecraft classes at The University of Kentucky, being promoted to Associate Professor in 1988, and Full Professor in 2003. John is the author of an article in Yale University’s "Technical Briefs", 1989, which was reprinted in the book Technical Design Solutions for the Theatre, vol 1, 2003. He is also the author of three articles in "The Painter’s Journal". Focal Press published the first edition of Illustrated Theatre Production Guide in 2002. John is also the author of several plays, and a number of articles about vintage pinball machines. He has a passion for vintage electronics of all sorts. He is currently working on a book about the history of electricity and electronics in the entertainment industry. In addition to being an academic, John is a member of IATSE the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employes, and has served as the president of Local 346 for many years. As a professional stagehand, John has worked hundreds of different touring shows in local venues, and toured with three different national tours of Broadway musicals; Grand Hotel, The Will Rogers Follies, and the 90’s revival of Camelot starring Robert Goulet. In the summer of 2005, John attended a scenery painting class at the well known Cobalt Studios, in White Lake, New York. One of the teachers for the class was Susan Crabtree, who is also a Focal Press author, Painting Scenery for the Theatre. John has become interested in the topic of visual storytelling, and the importance of puppet and mask theatre. To that end he has been working with students in creating shows that are written and designed to tell stories in a visual way, rather than relying heavily on a text and the spoken word. In this regard, he has been most heavily influenced by In the Heart of the Beast Puppet Theatre, Indonesian shadow puppets or Wayang Kulit, and most recently by the brilliant work of the ANPU puppet theatre of Prague, Czech Republic and Zurich, Switzerland. In the summer of the 2007 John was invited by colleagues at Baylor University to participate in their production of the Robert Askins play, "The Rotting of Tycho de Brahe" at the Prague Quadrennial. I am so passionate about renting electronic textbooks! I love being able to take notes without damaging the actual book, I love the fact that the text just disappears after the semester is over, and I LOVE the price! This book is a great resource for anyone involved in theatre production and stagecraft. From the most inexperienced novice (me) to a seasoned veteran, this book contains many terms and diagrams that are informative without being overwhelming, and are very helpful for anyone looking to expand their knowledge, or reinforce what they already know.

Best all around book I've found for a stagehand just starting out. And unlike many books on the subject it's enjoyable to read. Also, excellent reference book for the more experienced stagehand. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a career in traditional theaters are rock n roll venues.

In many ways, this book may be misrepresented to people. Its not simply "hey, remember how awesome this game was?" type of book, nor does it look at games from a technical side (though technology is featured at times). This is more to do with the social impact of games. As such, it does not spend excessive time on the failed consoles, or failed games (though the exception can be made for the Atari-buster known as E.T.).Its a very useful book, I'm using it for a college class! Its probably the first 'text book' i'll actually look forward to keeping! The book is about as comprehinsive as one volume can be (and obviously, books like High Score and Game Over will complement this book). It is comprehensive, and exhaustive, as there are many excerpts from the people that made the games, and changed the world of home entertainment. A great book, when teamed up with a personal history of video games, this can shed some light on the people and events behind the games.

This is an excellent volume of video game history and well worth the read.However, be warned: It was published in 2001.I am writing this in May 2016. In 2001 the 6th generation of game consoles had only just been released. The Dreamcast was discontinued in 2001 but the more well-known members of this class; PS2, Gamecube, and the Xbox, were barely released before the end of the year.The 7th and current 8th generation of game consoles is not contained in this book. If you are looking for history of the recent generations, this is not the book you are looking to buy.Just be sure you know what you are buying.

I used this book for a class in college and I was deathly afraid the content was going to be boring and/or outdated. Thankfully it was neither and I was shocked how much I not only enjoyed the class, but loved reading the book! Obviously the history only goes so far but they did a great job of not outdating themselves. In fact you could read it now and still get a lot of great history! I recommend college professors to use this in their video game history classes more often or even if you're not in school, check this book out and get some phenomenal video game knowledge out of it!

I couldn't put this one down. It's a long book but I felt like it flew by. I appreciated the more in depth approach taken on the earlier history, as anything after the SNES era is in general less interesting to me, personally. I learned some stuff I hadn't picked up from other sources and picked up some more in depth knowledge on some topics I only knew a bit on. Being born in the mid-80s, this book did a great job at describing the feeling of the eras I wasn't around for. The book ended between the release of the PS2 and the Xbox which for me was a perfect ending point as the end of the Dreamcast, and hence the end of Sega hardware, is where my interest also ends.

Video games as a medium have been around for an extremely long time. Each console bringing it's own unique and memorable experiences to the plate. As the genre progresses and gains more recognition, it's all the more important that it's heritage be preserved for future generations to learn about. This is where "The Ultimate History Of Video Games" comes in. While other books devoted to gaming merely gloss over certain topics, "The Ultimate History Of Video Games" leaves absolutely no stone unturned and provides such an incredible wealth of information and detail that you'd swear you experienced it first hand. The book covers gaming from it's humble beginnings as mechanical games of chance all the way up to the introduction of the PS2, Gamecube, and XBOX.It also of course has several chapters devoted to the entirety of Atari's lifespan, dishing out more insight than you could ever hope to know. Like Nolan Bushnell (Atari's founder) stealing the idea for "Pong" from Ralph Baer (the creator of the Magnavox Odyssey) during a play through demonstration. The case was later taken to court and Atari had to pay Baer and Magnavox a small licensing fee. Apple founder Steve Jobs and his companion Woz were also present during the creation of the VCS/2600. Woz's re-design of the system was so incredibly tight that no one could duplicate it.So much is contained within this thick, "grade school sized" tome that is could have easily have been a book series, with each individual title devoted to a specific company's history. Mr. Kent did THAT good of a job on it. My only complaint is that sometimes the chapters feel a bit scattered. For instance, you could be reading about the historic crash of '82 and suddenly be learning about the creation of Donkey Kong and Activision. It's a mild gripe, but more thought should have been put into how the book was structured. Regardless, the book is an absolute necessity for any reader with even a passing interest in video games as a whole.

I wished this guide would be regularily available in Europe as well.
