The stories in this book have all been previously published, so if you're a fan of the author, they won't be new to you. I don't usually seek out "humor" books, since many of them seem to take the business of being funny way too seriously. So I've been seeing references to Sedaris for years, but never read any of his stuff. My loss. If these stories are typical, he's both funny and thoughtful, which is a nice combination.The opening story "SantaLand Diaries" is the story that put this author on the map when it was read on NPR. It's the sort of "autobiographical fiction" (i.e. based on his life, but exaggerated for comic effect) that Sedaris does so beautifully. It's a classic.Sedaris admits to some exaggeration, so maybe writing stories about holidays is a natural fit for his talents. Americans take their celebrations very seriously indeed, with the result that observing behavior during holidays is even more entertaining than observing behavior the rest of the time. Holidays bring out the crazy in all of us. Ask any cop or ER nurse or Mall Santa. Even normal people go whack-o.I loved the Christmas letters that spiral out of control. I howled at the critiques of children's holiday productions. Naturally, your own offspring (or grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc) are charming, talented, and delightful, but who the hell thought we'd want to watch those other boring brats?But my favorites were "Dinah the Christmas Whore" and "Let It Snow" because of the glimpses into the strange family that shaped this author's twisted outlook on life. His family may have been "Southern by the Grace of Greyhound" but they fit right in. Anyone who grew up in a dysfunctional family will recognize the characters and situations. Those of you who grew up in a normal family don't know what you missed.I think most of these stories are ones I would enjoy re-reading and the collection is a great introduction to this author's writing. After all, this is a man who's been called "one of the funniest writers alive." By The Economist. And if people who write about the economy don't know great humor when they see, I can't imagine who does.

I like David Sedaris. His off-beat humor matches up with what I think is funny. I don't like it so much when he ventures into fiction, although I have to admit his Six to Eight Black Men and The Cow and the Turkey were spot on. The Monster Mash just didn't click with me, but the SantaLand Diaries was worth the price of the book.Sedaris is meant to be heard, and I can hear his voice reading these short stories as I read them. His unique speaking voice and writing voice are unmistakable. Nobody sound just like David Sedaris. Funny and poignant, both voices combine into a reading experience like none other.

As someone who gets depressed this time of year, and I know I'm not alone in this - this is my antidepressant! How can I be sad at all the signs of Christmas while I'm laughing my butt off with David Sedaris as an elf with me? Best to listen to it read by Sedaris himself, (he reads his work SO well!) but I have heard it so many times that when I read it I can almost hear him speaking in my head. I used to listen to it on the car between Thanksgiving and New Year's, and it really helped. Buy it for the people you know who get sad or just don't like this time of year!!! I do have a complaint with Amazon though - my copy, shipped along with another book, arrived bent! I'll try weighing it down with a stack of heavy books to weigh it down and hopefully straighten it out, but they should have shipped it differently - maybe between 2 sheets of heavy cardboard or something. But I highly recommend the book - one of the funniest I've ever read!!!!

I don't share much of a background with David Sedaris, I'm not from a "middle class" family, I have no college education (IVY LEAGUE even, c'mon), no one in my family has had anything to do with the arts, I'm an only freakin' child, I'm born bred and have always lived in the North West, I don't even have a passport let alone the means to live in any country I please... The list could continue and for some readers things like this make Sedaris' writing out of reach, even insulting.The thing is though we seem to have absolutely nothing in common we do have one thing, tiny as it may be, we the commanality of being human and living during this particular era. That is what connects me to him and his writing, his humble humanity. He knows he isn't a beauty queen, he consistently blunders through life making mistakes, playing the fool even and yet he has this amazing ability to WRITE about it, to share it with thw world and make fun of himself OUT LOUD to millions of readers. I love him for that, I love him for the fact academia hasn't sapped the humanity out of him and made him feel blunder proof or at least made him a blunder snob, hiding behind eight letter words that no one knows the true meaning of, ducking behind an Ivy league education.I picked this particular book up because my best friend is in the hospital, has been, will be, for a while. I have learned that he CANNOT handle being alone so I sit there, hour upon hour and try to read him to sleep. Sedaris' short stories and essays are perfect hospital food right? The problem is reading them aloud for the first time is hard because he makes laugh out loud (and not many do)so in the quiet hospital corridors one room is bellowing with laughter, from me, from my sick friend who really shouldn't be laughing right now, it hurts him, but he won't let me stop. A nurse cruises in inevitably when I am reading something that out of context seems dirty, it becomes even funnier.My context of reading this particular Sedaris book aside it is really a very funny, charming piece of literature that connects with the reader on many levels. The parts that others seem to be offended or put off by, I say read them with zeal, be happy that someone out there is making enough money off being a boob, off proudly being a boob to travel to Japan and France and across the U.S. and is taking the time (for money maybe but whatever) to share his experiences as a pretty much average Joe with us. Be happy to read from someone who relishes in the oddities, who isn't always tring to make you sympathetic and tearful. It really is a rare quality. You will find that most contemporary memoir(ish) literature relies on human empathy and sad, sad, sad, SAD parts of life. It's nice to take a break and read from someone who can tell you abot his mother dying of lung cancer in one paragraph and have you giggling in the next.Comedy or Tragedy, life is what you make of it. Trust me I have my own fair share of the comedically tragic, but when my friends can laugh at the crazy things I say and do when I am hallucinating because Lupus is attacking my brain I am way better than when they are crying over it.David Sedaris has the ability to make you laugh over things that put another way might make you cry. AND he has inspired me to REALLY quit smoking, I am done with cigarettes.

Yes, mythology is hot.

I loved the way Crane painted the picture of Ireland - its quaint towns, beautiful landscaping, and culture - and how the author anchors the main character's upbringing in Cleveland, Ohio."The only therapy a Clevelander needs is beer. Takes care of all your pain at half the cost."Accurate.The romance is sweet. The banter is funny. The reader can feel the struggle the main character has trying to find who she is as she battles amnesia. The wrap up of the story came a bit abruptly, but still a story totally worth reading."You always need a spare tire in Cleveland. For the pot holes of life."Also accurate.

The sole survivor of a plane that crashed in Ireland from America wakes up with amnesia. Her lovely nurse is gentle and kind with her, and lets her have a quick moment to prepare herself for meeting her father once he arrives at the hospital to collect her.She believes he's her dad--and seems nice enough from what she can tell while peeking around the corner at him--but she can't look this stranger in the eye and cause him more hurt with her lack of emotional ties with him. So she takes off, talking a hospital volunteer into letting her stay with him until her memory comes back and she can be herself when she reunites with her dad for good.In the process of waiting to find out who she was, she discovers who she wants to be.Rebekah Crane has a way of writing what seems like easy reading, but weaves quirkiness and serious issues in with a deft hand that makes them have just the right weight when they hit. A fun read with romance, family, and finding yourself.

Rebekah Crane has, once again, given me characters to love, a location that I could see and feel and a story I couldn’t put down. My only complaint is that the story made me late for work!

I loved this story! I fell in love with the whole cast of characters—from the delightfully curmudgeon sister, to the kind nurse, to the supportive shop-owner, to the love interest, Kieran—who, for all his understandable faults, would totally be my new book boyfriend...if I was a teenager, of course. I rooted for Clementine the whole way and loved that even though she was confused, she was MIGHTY (!), and she faced her challenges as such. And, finally, I loved entrenching myself in the wonderful world of Ireland for a bit. A twisty-turny, big-hearted, utterly delightful read.

A wonderful escape into the world of Ireland. This roller coaster of a ride leaves you breathless but satisfied. Highly recommended!

I love this author, but had started to worry about the similarities between her books getting too repetitious. This book proved that worry unfounded. This takes you on gun ride with character traits she enjoys writing about, but the characters are on a different adventure. Questions, lost memories, a journey of finding themselves - okay a lot like most of her books, but there is enough twists to put this book in a category all of it's own. The authors story as it wove through love, friendship and loss in Ireland is truly one I’ll never forget. Now there’s just one thing left to do...plan a trip to Ireland!

This is book is an adorable story that provides insights into the difficulty of understanding who we are and what our purpose is. Rebekah Crane, yet again, delivers excellent character development and intrigue into how the novel will end. I was unable to put this book down! Additionally, the book was set in Ireland which I found to be unique and extremely well researched, as the setting was impactful in the story. Howard Schultz is the former chairman and chief executive officer of Starbucks Coffee Company. He grew up in Brooklyn public housing and was the first in his family to graduate college. Easy read that strikes a good balance between autobiography, entrepreneurship, and politics. Schultz' contrasts an America that allowed him to go from the projects to the boardroom. The system has deteriorated into two angry tribes engaging in revenge politics with short-term thinking that have long-term negative consequences for the country (notably the staggering national debt which most major politicians ignore as it's easier to say the right things to get elected and leave the bill for the next generation). It's a cautionary tale that moderates/centrists/libertarians/etc. have been saying for quite some time - usually on deaf ears that are only interested in distinguishing between 'red' and 'blue'.

I see a lot of bad reviews on this book. I got the book a few hours ago and I started reading it first pages. I hope all those people who left bad reviews on this book, never ever had to dealing with sh!t like most people deals under the middle class.When I was in the school with no money, living in a tiny room, where the house living room was full of people, I always took my cousin laptop and I run away escaping from those noise people to the nearest Starbucks store in my city. There, I can put my headphones on and forget about the word, making my homework quietly.After reading a few pages it makes sense how I felt back in the days at my favorite cafeteria (Starbucks) no-one bother me, it was just my self and I. I don’t understand why people puts to much hate on a book that probably haven’t reads yet.As a dreamer, I can see a successful man starting from the button and I can’t wait to take notes from this great book. You have to be humble enough to share these memories, this man doesn’t need to tell the world about his life experiences or successful company secrets.All I can tell to Howard S. Is thank you for sharing your life through this pages. I don’t really care if you run for president, so far, all I care is what I can take from the book I have on my hands.Highly recommended. Five stars ⭐️ +

He has some fresh ideas!

Diclaimer: I'm Turkish. English is my second language.After reading the first 50 pages my thought was that this book is not edited. I didn't know about the presidency thing and his awful opinion on not introducing further taxes on the wealthy. The first pages of book is full of hyperboles, boring unnnecesssary statements, vague opinions, run on sentences, I was confused.I am, however, a big fan of his initial memoir, "Pour Your Heart Into It". Things seemed much more sincere there and the tone is much more fresh and relatable. I wish this book took that flag and carried into deeper into sincerity and honesty. Instead it seems like one big pep talk.

its a good book. I see Liberals are trying to throw the ratings off because they are mad he is running and they "think" this is why they will lose again in 2020. Throw all the left right out...what he says makes sense.

When my copy arrived on 1/30, I settled in and read the book from cover to cover. It's an interesting read. At times, intriguing. I haven't read any previous books by Howard Schultz and am not a Starbucks customer. There's a lot I didn't know about this former CEO or his company."From The Ground Up: A Journey to Reimagine the Promise of America" combines the story of his life from childhood on, a revolutionary business model that grew and expanded as Starbucks became a household name across the globe, and the value Schultz placed on his employees (aka partners), their dreams/goals and the communities they serve. The author's passion for creating opportunities is clear throughout all 335 pages. I was struck by his transparency and--especially--his willingness to own mistakes made along the way. A trait that's increasingly rare. There were areas that seemed to "bunny trail", yet I found the bulk of the book compelling. Thought-provoking. I don't agree with everything Schultz believes. I don't have to. It's a worthwhile read on it's own merits.

It would be very easy to slam this book as just a corporate “puff piece” attempting to make you feel warm and fuzzy about Starbucks, but there is much more here. I do think that readers should NOT consider the newly announced Presidential tease when judging the work and keep an open mind. I couldn’t give the book five stars, because there are some things in the book that seem a bit patronizing. The mea culpa on the departure of the SuperSonics basketball team from Seattle in the book was unnecessary. He decided to sell the team to stop losing money, we got it. It was GUILT that made him put that in the book. Also, he talks about great people who were hired to make the company more successful, but many times he does exactly the opposite from what they suggested. The book did bring a bit of a tear at times, being about the same age, we lived through the same events and I love how he captured those from his perspective. When someone noticed I was reading Schultz, they asked me what I thought of him (after reading the book), I said, Goody-two-shoes Billionaire, but I have to admit, it’s a great story and shows how often Howard tried to do the right thing. It’s easy to read and in the end, you will realize, it’s not the end of the story. It’s just a not so camouflaged resume for higher office.

This is an outstanding, comprehensive book for preparing for any kind of sudden disaster or event which may require you to leave your home on very short notice. This book is designed to prepare you for the worst case scenario of 72 hours of living with the contents of what you are carrying in a bag if you are forced from your home. It also goes over a small emergency bag that should stay with you in case you aren't able to get to your main bag. Next is the meat of the preparation: what to put in your bag. I like the author’s direct, straight forward information and he provides a wealth of advice. Lots of examples are given as to what is needed to survive. Great stuff.

I purchased this as an ebook primarily as a base to build my own bug out bag. But I soon learned that each geographical region has its own challenges and these should be taken into account. However, the material is through enough to help with building your bag. It starts with the basics picking a pack to clothing suggestions to putting it all together. At 79 pages, it packs a good punch. However there is a little more to the first 72 hours than this book addresses. All in all this is a informative book, I would not purchase this as a paperback put as an ebook is well worth it.

It has taken me quite a long time to get around to reading this book. I'm sorry I took so long, and I'm glad I finally read it. It has great suggestions, and presents a lot of information that one needs to think about when building a bug out bag, including what about family members and pets. This book is geared to a 72 hour bug out, and it does a great job. It had suggestions that were easy, but I would not have thought of. I appreciated his including pets, because while disaster officials do not consider them important, to me they are family.

Being prepared for the unknown is so important and should be a priority. Starting out the book goes over the different aspects of a bag itself and what's important vs what's not. It also goes over a small emergency bag that should stay with you in case you aren't able to get to your main bag. Next is the meat of the preparation: what to put in your bag. It also talks about things like shelter, fire, communication, and pet supplies. Of course there's much more included and it's a great resource on how to be prepared and the basics of what to know.

I really appreciate this book. It is very helpful for everyone since so many disasters are happening anywhere in the world. We must be always ready every time. We must ensure that our survival kit is complete with essential things that we need when worst scenario happens. The tips and techniques given in this book how to prepare our bug out bag are so useful. We must read and follow important reminders given in this book for our safety.

If your grandad taught you about livin' in the back and beyond with limited resources, then this'll be a refresher (per experience). For you greenhorns, this is a reasonable place to begin your education. NO book will EVER be the end all, be all. With that in mind, this is an excellent place to start if you missed all those Eagle Scout meetings because you were busy with your needlepoint lessons. Overall, I'd give this book a 6.5 out of 10--coming from a Northern California, redneck survivalist with an extensive background in living in harmony with the land; take my advice as you will. Yes, I'd recommend this book--to a newcomer, but not for the experienced "prepper", unless you want to reinforce your current viewpoint.
