Over the past few years I’ve been lecturing to the genealogy community on the topic of what to do with years of family history research and how to pass it on to the next generation. In my own book After You’re Gone: Future Proofing Your Genealogy Research, I review many simple techniques for cleaning out a loved one’s home in order to gather important family history items. So when it was announced that The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margaret Magnusson was being released, the book went to the top of my “must read” list. And I wasn’t disappointed. So what makes Magnusson’s slim but effective tome different than any one of the other “get organized” books out there? Hers is done with humor and humility and from the perspective that one day each of us will be gone from this earth. And who wants to be remember by their family and friends as a packrat? Or as someone who lived in a house where the camera crew from Hoarders was just outside the window? As the author states in the foreward: “Let me help make your loved ones’ memories of you nice—instead of awful.”What is Death Cleaning? The Swedish term döstädning literally means “death cleaning” in English. And as the author states, “it is a term that means that you remove unnecessary things and make your home nice and orderly when you think the time is coming closer for you to leave the planet.”Simple, right? Actually not as simple as you think. I’ve gone through two major “clean outs” of homes in the past 10 years, and I can tell you that each situation is different and each clean out takes lots of time. Magnusson cuts through the sentimentality that can often bog us down when we set out to do a “purge” of possessions. The author bluntly reminds you that if you are sitting on items that you haven’t looked at in years, would you really miss them? And what is the real value of these items? And more importantly, what legacy are you leaving for your children or grandchildren?Death cleaning according to Magnusson is “about a permanent form of organization that makes your everyday life run more smoothly.” So this isn’t just for those of us in our twilight years . . . anyone who feels burdened by their possessions can benefit from the sage advice found in The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning.Practice Advice Delivered with HumorMagnusson is “somewhere between 80 and 100 years old” as she states in the About the Author section and much of her advice is based on real experience. She cleaned out her mother’s apartment as well as her mother-in-law’s apartment after their deaths. And she downsized her own large home to fit into a two-bedroom apartment when her own husband died. One touching segment, for me, was when the author discussed finding notes from her mother pinned to specific items. Each note contained advice as to how to dispose of the item and who to contact since they might be interested. This practice provided peace of mind to Magnusson as she sorted through her mother’s possessions. And the funniest segments dealt with finding what the author calls “vice” items such as a block of arsenic (which her father kept on hand during World War II when the Nazis took over much of Europe) or cartons of cigarettes in her grandmother’s linen cabinet where she would sneak a smoke. Magnusson advises that if you have items tucked away that would cause embarrassment or discomfort when found by your loved ones, dispose of them. Or, in the case of a loved one’s collection of “marriage counselors”” keep your favorite one, not all fifteen. Not All Advice Works for Genealogists and Family HistoriansWhile I agree with the author on her basic approach to handling family photos and other sentimental items – set them aside to review later and don’t get bogged down in a walk down memory lane or you’ll never accomplish the cleaning – I strongly disagree with some ways of handling these items.Throwing away duplicate photos or images that are out of focus etc. is great, I don’t agree in disposing of photos just because you can’t identify anyone in the picture. As genealogists we know that we have resources to help figure out who is who and when the image was taken even if there are no notes written on the back.In addition, when it comes to salacious stories, letters and diaries, she writes: “Perhaps you have saved letters, documents, or diaries that contain information or family stories you would never wish to embarrass your descendants with. While we seem to live in a culture where everyone thinks they have the right to every secret, I do not agree. If you think the secret will cause your loved ones harm or unhappiness, then make sure to destroy them. Make a bonfire or shove them into the hungry shredder.”Again, I have to disagree. As a family historian my role is to uncover the truth, and then to preserve the truth. There are better ways of handling this type of information: one method I use is to preserve the information, place it into an envelope with instructions on how to handle it (such as release after all living individuals identified in the story have passed), and then store the item with estate planning and other important papers. This way my executor can decide how to handle the items, but they aren’t burned on the trash heap. The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning – A Great GiftThere are several books that I occasionally send to friends and family members, and even colleagues, as a thank you or when they are going through a difficult time in life. If you have parents who should be downsizing, or know a friend who just lost their spouse and needs to go through possessions, the calming advice in The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning can help remove the sting from such a process. I’m adding this one to my list of my “gifting” books.ConclusionOne of the most important pieces of advice from Magnusson, besides performing your own death cleaning NOW, is to discuss the topic with your family members and friends. She notes the Viking tradition of burying objects with the owner when they died: “This was to be sure that the dead would not miss anything in their new environment. It was also an assurance for the family members who remained that they would not become obsessed with spirits of the dead and constantly be reminded of them because their possessions were still scattered all over the tent or mud hut.”I enjoyed reading The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margaret Magnusson and I intend to put much of the information to good use in 2018 as I downsize my home here in Chicago. One of the main themes in Magnusson’s work is one of generosity: giving away those possessions that have outlived their usefulness in your life and gift them to someone else in need of their functionality. Doing so reminds me of the motto on Peter Bailey’s office wall in the movie It’s a Wonderful Life: “All you can take with you is that which you’ve given away.”

This is an exceedingly well-written book about a deeply personal and fraught moment in life. I think everyone SHOULD read it, but it requires careful examination of your headspace before you do so.A lot of people are complaining about how it doesn't tell you HOW to clean. That's not its aim. What it does it show you how to get into the correct headspace to DO the things YOU should be doing without selfishly expecting other people to clean up after you when you have died.Read it with care and embrace what it tells you. You will be happier in the long run.

I highly reccommend this- all my friends and family in the British Virgin Islands had a 'life cleanse' a few months ago and I can't tell you how much it put things in perspective. Irma visited and started the ball rolling with untolled tornados, 4 tidal waves and estimated 285mph straight line winds. Some of us were lucky enough to experience 2 or even all three of her cleansing techniques. Certain in the know British Military officers said our little island of Tortola was "worse than Baghdad after the bombing". In the two weeks following Irma, we were visited by Jose and welcomed his 16+ inches of rain into our broken homes followed by Maria, who simply completed the work with her dusting of mild category 3 winds.I can tell you- it was an eye-opener! We all learned a lesson in what really matters; that sometimes it's the simple things in life, like a bottle of drinking water,a cold can of baked beans,a can opener and a heavy lock on the door that can bring you the most comfort. I have been told by some friends that freeing trapped neighbors from the rubble of a nearby house is also quite fulfilling. When the military starts patrolling in helicopters, cases of water become available, someone pours a pail of cold cistern water over your head in lieu of a shower and you think you're in heaven or maybe just wish you were, one can truly begin to understand the meaning of death cleansing.Later, when you and your friends are strong enough to come together to saw, smash and shovel through the wreckage of what was once your lives comes a kind of enlightenment; "What the hell was all this stuff anyway?"Of course, there are moments ofter a month or four, when one is caught short remembering grandma's porcelain virgin/infanta or the garter Lulu tossed to your husband at a London revival of 'Guys and Dolls' on your honeymoon, but one soon overcomes the sadness choosing instead to concentrate on the more impotrtant aspects of life like maintaining the generator or camping out in the dry insurance company office to await what is owed for a replacement roof. There are indeed lessons to be learned here, friends.

We can’t take our stuff with us. So when we go, somebody has to clean up all the stuff we leave behind. Margareta Magnusson wrote this book to work out that problem. She says sort it out yourself before you go.She says that death cleaning is not a sad thing to do, as she walks you step by step through eliminating things you need, don’t want, or don’t have room for. She says that remembering the history of each item one last time can actually be enjoyable. Some practical tips include: start by checking the items by your front door; do the large items first; choose the clothes category early on.She also suggests you don’t wait too long.Once you get things under control, you can enjoy life even more. Magnusson says, “Death cleaning is not about dusting or mopping up; it is about a permanent form of organization that makes your everyday life run more smoothly.”I recommend this book to anyone who is ready to downsize their belongings and upsize their living. (My thanks to NetGalley for the review copy of this book.)

Well made, fantastic large print, not hard cover. Sadly the english translation is bad and the cover photos have some inaccuracies but the occasional images on the inside look fine. Definately not made by someone who actually understands one piece. However the planner aspects are wonderfully done. Tons of space and variety of views.

Turned out great, just what I needed, would have been better if it came with pictures of the anime characters every so often. I still highly recommend.

This book will be one I return to several times, because if you're not mindful of what you're reading, you'll miss the point of whole paragraphs. The language is easy to read, but the details are incredible in relation to concepts that might be new to a lot of people. We visit the various psychological obstacles in regards to our sense of thing ownership, and the challenges on the myopic level within the home are convincingly difficult. All in all, it's complicated and I don't easily retain most info, but I found it very engaging and was often surprised by her good sense of humor. This may be one of those books on organizing that stands out the most for me, and I've read several full length books on the subject many times over.

I enjoy reading books about organization...and part of my former clutter was a collection of these books. I've read serious psychology, books about hoarding, how-to's that tell you what to keep and how to keep it. But this book is just terrific, even while it doesn't order you to keep or toss any particular item, and doesn't advocate a line of products (or "junk bunkers", as one writer calls them) to store your Stuff. Instead, it helps you understand why you have your stuff to begin with; what psychological purpose does every little piece of paper or flea market bargain or duplicate sweater serve? Once you understand what your Things mean to you, you are emotionally free to choose whether to hold onto them or part with them. It's this underlying information that makes all the difference. Since I first read this book, I have gotten rid of an incredible amount of stuff, and I haven't missed any of it. All my closets, drawers, shelves and files are organized, yet I didn't need a single one of my organizing books to manage this. All I needed was to understand why I owned what I owned...then I was able to look at all these Things rationally and see what I needed, what I used, and what no longer fit my life and had to leave. I recommend this book to anyone who feels anxiety at the thought of dealing with their accumulation of clutter, or who feels deprived at the prospect of buying less, or who is just plain angry at how Things have taken over their valuable time and space.

I've read a lot of 'How To' books regarding holding on to things in my life that I really don't need. And a lot of those books are informative and have helped me along the way. However THIS book is a winner. The concepts are fresh, easy to execute & is a fast read. Worried about becoming a hoarder? Read this... it's really made me think about the simplification of my life in a new way.

Found this book interesting and really quite helpful by broadening my approach to clutter, material objects, or what she refers to as "things". After reading this, you should realize that most organizing books are really only dealing with the tip of the iceberg. Even if it is completely melted, more ice will bob up again before you know it.My house is neat, but I had this nagging feeling that I was hanging on to too many things for not good enough of a reason. She made me think about the often knee-jerk decisions I make about getting, keeping, saving, and inevitably storing things. More than anything, this book will broaden your thinking about the why behind the everyday decisions you make about your relationship to the objects in your life.

The explanations about the "why" we hold on to Things is enlightening. I am learning as I go through the pages and I feel motivated to actually get control of not only the clutter, but my life.... There are philosophies about why we collect and store Things, and why we keep them around long after they are useful or worth anything. I didn't know that. I have been thinking I'm lazy or just not organized. Turns out I just might be angry at myself about something or other. Very interesting book. I recommend it to anyone who is trying to declutter your house, as well as guidance to feel better about yourself.

Are you the type of person who wants someone to tell them how to organize, what's the best method for storing this, that, or the other thing, and what you should get rid of? Are you someone who wants someone else to put an organizational system in place for you so you don't have to think about it? If so, grab another book. There's plenty of them out there, and I'm sure you'll find one with an approach and a system you can live with. But I'm the kind of person who has Things. I'm the kind of person who is driven up the wall by professional organizers whose mantra is "get rid of it - decluttering is key to successful organization!" I'm the kind of person who, by and large, likes my Things but sometimes feels overwhelmed. I'm the kind of person who needs a certain amount of chaos to spark my creativity. I'm the kind of person with ADD who will focus on what I'm doing wrong, who spends a lot of mental energy thinking about what I *should* do, who thinks I have to do it all, and do it all at once. In short, I'm the kind of person this book was written for.I want to understand how I differentiate between Things and things, why I acquire more Things, and how I let Things pile up. I want to understand how to own my Things instead of having them own me or feel overwhelmed by them. Books that tell me I'll never be successfully organized unless I get rid of my Things don't work for me. If all I need to do is get rid of my things so that there is very little to organize, why do I need an organizer? And where is the organizer going to be when, a week after I've "decluttered" and gotten rid of my Things, I'm sitting there making plans to get more Things or crying because some Things are gone and I'm sorry I let them go? Unless I understand my relationship with Things, I will never be successful at being organized, and I'll never find a system that works for me. I know, because I've tried numerous times to be "more organized." I read the books, I try this system or that, and I do get more organized -- for about a month or 2 or 3. And then it all falls apart, and I'm tired of that.Glovinsky's book gives the structure to develop this understanding so that I can put a good system together once and for all. The exercises in this book have given me a lot of insight, and Glovinsky's non-judgmental approach has increased my willpower to do what I need to do with that insight. I still have a ways to go, but I'm well on my way to cutting my Thing habits and creating to an organizational that will work for me not only for the next 2-3 months, but for a very long time. Am also planning on getting the companion book to this one to make things even easier. Thanks, Ms. Glovinsy, and my mother thanks you, too!

Thomas Nagel, in Mind and Cosmos, reached out to some surprising collaborators, and makes some surprising confessions, in this interesting but underpowered exploration. Nagel starts with a set of presuppositions that he spells out, but does not adequately justify. Due to his providing far too weak a preamble to defend his starting premises, nobody who is not already aware of the concerns he assumes, will bother to engage in the suspension of disbelief needed to explore these questions. As a result, the book is not effective in getting people to consider the questions he is asking.Nagle assumes that the failure of physicalist reductionism about consciousness is a given, and that the challenges that abiogenesis has encountered are reasonably well known. He then engaged Alvin Plantinga and his anti-materialist, anti-Darwinian thinking – and took what is probably the best piece of thinking that Plantinga has offered. This is the observation that a Darwinian sourced “reasoning” skill is not any more reliable or trustworthy than any of our other Darwinian sourced mental toolkit – so our reasoning, from a survival perspective, is no more valid than our intuitions, moral sense, and consciousness. Therefore one cannot from a Darwinian perspective reference reason or science to dismiss any of the others. Nagel then adds reasoning and reasoning and morality (both as a semi-platonist “reality”) to the suite of surprising things that a worldview must explain the existence of.This gives him four challenging things: life, consciousness, reasoning, and morality, that he considers a worldview has to explain. Given that he assumes that abiogenesis research has stagnated, and consciousness is not reducible, he cannot reference reductive consciousness to explain reasoning or morality, and the book serves as an exploration of the alternatives. After dismissing reduction, Nagel then dismisses theistic phenomena as well. Nagel’s primary alternative is “teleology” – that there is some feature of the universe that makes it predisposed to create reasoning and morality, and that life and consciousness are just way stations to get to these further phenomenon. Nagel tries to address this “teleology” concept generically, and considers a variety of structural or logic challenges to the existence of such a feature. This discussion had a variety of weaknesses. “Teleology” assumes a purpose, I.E. intention, and if this is supposed to be an alternative to theist metaphysics, then a “purpose” driven universe does not strike me as a sufficiently neutral term. There is an alternative to telelogy, that he does not discuss, and does nto explain why. A number of other thinkers, including Stuart Kauffman, Christian DeDuve, and Paul Davies, have proposed self-organizational principles that could fall under the characteristics he calls “teleology”, but without the “intention” implication. Self organization, plus a strong (causally open/independent) emergence principle is far more specific than the generic “teleology”, and is specific enough to evaluate its plausibilityagainst the rest of the universe. These two principles could plausibly increase the odds of life emerging, and make abiogenesis less of a mystery. It is less clear why they would lead living things to be conscious, however – functionalism and AI advances show that we could have been meat machines. And getting from consciousness to reasoning and morality – it is not clear that these two principles would at all. So – perhaps that is why he ignored this prior emergence thinking, as he did not consider it sufficiently powerful an assumption set to deal with his four mysteries.Sticking with his teleology then, despite the theistic implication – there is a major set of questions Nagel fails to ask: what would this assumption predict about the universe, and does the universe match this prediction?• IF the universe were trying to create reasoning or morality,• AND these are only achievable with advanced reasoning minds –• THEN the universe would be configured to produce lots of minds.IF the universe were optimized to produce minds, AND minds were emergent from complex matter (Nagel is assuming emergent property dualism relative to consciousness here), THEN the universe would be configured to consist of basically all complex matter. This is manifestly not the case – only some 7% is matter, and that couldn't form complexity until billions of years into the age of the universe after supernova have formed the higher elements then spread them out. Our universe can support life in something like 0.001% of its mass (roughtly the mass fraction in planets and asteroids), and only starting about 5 billion years after its formation. If teleology was at work in our universe, it is a pretty weak teleology. Nagel admits his purely conceptual discussion of teleology identifies enough problems already that he has a weak case for this idea, and when one adds in simple test cases, the entire concept seems absurd. These very apparent flaws with teleologic emergence highlight the primary flaws in this book. The credibility of this implausible concept of teleological emergence depends on it being less obviously wrong than either reductionist or theistic worldviews, but Nagel provides his readers no resources to make this comparison. The most controversial passages in the book are two paragraphs in the introduction in which Nagel defends the Intelligent Design movement. This section is once more underpowered. Nagel admits himself to be not competent to judge the outcome of ID's dispute with Darwinian thinking, but then contradictorily renders a judgment that ID did not lose decisively, credits them for asking good questions, then moves on, leaving readers hanging. Another few paragraphs outlining the something like my own thinking in the following would have done wonders: "In **my** judgment ID lost decisively as a science theory, as ID avoided ever making any predictions, and predictions are a prerequisite for science. What ID DID do was identify test cases for Darwinian thinking. Evolution is an incremental process, and it cannot make steps larger than some TBD size. WHAT IS THAT SIZE, and HOW DO WE MEASURE/TEST FOR IT??? it usually takes an opposing theory to force advocates to answer such test questions, and ID provides such a challenge. ID advocates proposed their own answers: Irreducible Complexity to define what is outside the step size, and Specified Complexity to do the measuring. These may be imperfect terms, and they have been criticized, but if they are flawed it is incumbent on evolutionists to specify what testable alternatives should look like. Intrinsic to the ID thinking is that Abiogenesis will fall outside the range of what evolutionary processes can achieve – and it really is up to abiogenesis advocates to answer why it should be considered a plausible process, and the terms in which such a claim should be made." If Nagel had written some similar supplement, he would have avoided a lot of the flack that he recieved.Nagel reveals much of his personal views here. He notes that he is an atheist, who considers theism to be implausible to the extreme. He also admits to wishing that reductive physicalism was how the universe works. But he considers the rationale against reductive physicalism to be extremely convincing. And given the problems he sees in theism, he felt compelled to try to find some emergentist alternative worldview. This is admirable, however this admirable effort suffers from both a) he does not spell out this convincing rationale to encourage other physicalist-leaning thinkers to follow his lead in pursuing these ideas, and b) the ideas he came up with are so weak.

You've got to admire a guy who stands up against an entrenched, largely mannerless establishment and points out that the emperor, in fact, has no clothes. This book opens a conversation that's long overdue. The book has some great soundbytes:In response to those who say 'the universe requires no explanation, since there are infinite universes and we'd inevitably find ourselves in one of them' he replies:"If I ask for an explanation of the fact that the air pressure in the transcontinental jet is close to that at sea level, it is no answer to point out that if it weren't, I'd be dead."On page 83 he points out that humans value reason above physical circumstances or comforts, and the mystery of how our minds make contact with rationality cannot be explained by survival alone.Nagel uses philosophy to touch scientific questions that have been raised by Hubert Yockey, for example, who shows that the origin of the genetic code is "possible but not knowable," because while it obeys the laws of physics, the laws of physics do not explain how any code comes into being. On page 53 he touches on questions about the process of evolution itself - he argues for "abandoning the standard assumption that evolution is driven by exclusively physical causes." This thinking is very much in line with much of the field of bioinformatics and recent evolutionary researchers such as Jablonka, Shapiro, Kirschner and Witzany. On page 106: "An adequate conception of the cosmos must contain the resources to account for how it could have given rise to beings capable of thinking successfully about what is good and bad, right and wrong, and discovering moral and evaluative truths that do not depend on their own beliefs."I do have some criticisms. At numerous points he drifts into statements that are purely his own conception of how things seem to be. I also think his dismissal of theistic philosophy is unwarranted. At one points he simply states that there is no evidence for God and then moves on with no further justification... as though the matter has long been settled.Inferences to God and philosophical arguments for God are no more easily dismissed than anything else he argues in this book; just read Antony Flew's last work. Philosopher Alvin Plantinga's review of this book is well worth a read, by the way.It is inevitable that an author such as Nagel will be smeared by hardline Darwinists and New Atheists, who generally don't trouble themselves with such inconveniences as civility and dialogue. I give him 5 stars for the courage to take on a cabal of vocal and peevish bullies.I salute him even more for taking a middle position between the theists and materialists, knowing that he will get flack from both sides. Mr. Nagel, thank you for writing this book.
