About the Author

Chuck Hodell is the author of the bestselling ATD book ISD From the Ground Up and has been involved in the worlds of training and education for more than 30 years. He has written extensively on instructional design and training-related topics for ATD, including several Infolines. He has enjoyed stints as a musician, police officer, telephone company repair technician, trainer, teacher, and academic administrator. Like many talent development professionals, his first exposure to training and instructional design was as a subject matter expert. He currently serves as associated director of the graduate program in instructional systems development at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He is also the senior program director for instructional design at the Transportation Learning Center and academic adviser to the International Masonry Institute. Hodell has an undergraduate degree from Antioch University and an MA and PhD from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

If you are looking for a how-to resource on instructional design, its history and current trends, then please keep looking.This book is a loose collection of blackboard lectures, repackaged in book form, and sold to the author’s students. The tone of the book is comparable to opinionated Facebook posts, full of cliches and unsubstantive, wordy paragraphs.Professional academics often write a book to use as their sole teaching text. They produce edition after edition to eliminate aftermarket (used book) sales. It’s how they supplement their income, and there’s nothing wrong with that, as long as the book is actually good. This book is in its fourth edition, yet admits to not covering the latest approaches to ISD, current trends or technology. I’m sure future editions will be just as lacking.The chapter on design, probably the most important, is just two and half pages long, while other sections ramble, repeat themselves and wander. The book seems to presuppose that the reader already has a working knowledge of instructional design. The review questions at the end of each chapter often ask the reader’s opinion about ISD, while the information needed to appropriately respond has not been presented. It’s like asking a new student driver what they think about being a taxi driver - it makes no sense.I’ve read the fourth edition twice in an attempt to learn about ISD, because, sadly, I bought it. I still find it to be very poorly organized and shallow. If you are Mr. Hodell’s student, perhaps you will fare better. But this is far from a valuable resource on the subject.

Love the way the author engages the reader on instructional design. This is helpful in my grad schooling, but will remain a useful tool within my professional career, as well.

Excellent resource, lots of good ideas.

The Hodell book on instructional design was the shinning story of my graduate introduction to instructional design course I recently took at My local University. In hindsight I should have purchased the book and skipped the course... Chuck's writing invites your attention providing a great foundation to understand ADDIE and its supporting role in course design. Great examples from m the business world and practical advice all worked well for me. Why four stars? Well I have an aversion to statements like "this is the most important ..." If it's the most important then it should only be in the book once, or be repeated exactly the same rather used multiple times to describe different elements. Overall a good read, educational I am likely to use as a reference in the future.

Great book, used it to onboard a new Instructional Designer with great success.

Very informative and the enthusiasm of the author I just love. I recently purchased a set 60 essential oils and most I did not know what they can be useful for. I don't have the time to look up online for each one so this book came in handy.

I like it easy to read. Lots of information but not over whelming.I think it will make a good reference book.

I have heard from my friend that the diffuser with the proper mix of the essential oils can help me get rid of my flu and insomnia issues. I have found this Kindle version of the book and it has exactly all the information I was looking for plus some extra cool recipes for the oils to try just to give it a nice smell in the bedroom. Good guide!

This book has good info, but it was written by someone who does not have a good control of the english language. The wording is many times, hard to follow., leaving you to jump around chapters.

Many sentence fragments and incorrect usage of words. Not sure if info is trustworthy since it seems no care was taken in writing this book. Very disappointed.

Finally Dr Funk’s book is here! I wished for a book like this 8 and 1/2 years ago when I was diagnosed. Her compassionate, calm and steady voice is through out this book teaching us how to care for our bodies and our breasts. So many things have changed in the last few years in breast cancer treatment and to finally have a book that gives us proactive measures to take and focuses not only on the disease but also on breast health is a blessing. I bought multiple copies, one for each of my daughters and one for me. I want them to have the latest information but also none of the scare tactics of old. I gave them the check box next to first degree relative with breast cancer and with Dr Funk’s book they will learn that nothing is inevitable and there are things to do to lessen your chances of cancer. Thank you Dr. Funk for this —we really needed it!

I liked how the author showed the critical moments that the pilot face during his flight and how he need to respond in effective/efficient way. Although I am not a commercial pilot or even a licensed pilot but most of the stories made me visualize the situation in the cockpit. It is similar to watching "Air Crash Investigation" TV show in National Geographic. If I am a commercial pilot I would keep the book as a reference in my library.On the other hand, I faced problem trying to go through all the technical terms and abbreviation used in the stories. I think it would be better to simplify this to the common reader like me.Finally I liked how the author transfer his passion into a way to help developing the Aviation Industry

Seriously, there are anecdotes in here about the pilot not being furnished with fresh bedding on a long haul flight. I have been reading science fiction for over forty years. I think I have had a broad exposure to all forms of the genre during that period. After a brief hiatus, several years ago I dove back in; focusing on some of the newer authors, and have been very satisfied with most of my selections. I try to read most of the Hugo and Nebula Award winners, and having done so, I think I have a pretty good idea of what makes outstanding science fiction.With all of that said, I feel strongly that The Dark Forest may be the best work of science fiction I have ever experienced. I read the English translation of Cixin Liu’s Chinese science fiction novel, The Three Body Problem. I thought that it was very good, but not excellent. I was sufficiently intrigued to proceed on to the second novel of the trilogy, The Dark Forest, and I am eternally grateful that I did. I am just floored by how good this novel is, on so many levels.I have read so many science fiction novels that are little more than spaceships and aliens, with poor underlying stories or character development. The Dark Forest is an outstanding piece of literature, above and beyond its label as a work of science fiction. It has very thoughtful themes, touching on philosophy, anthropology, sociology and psychology. The advanced technology and elements of hard science fiction are outstanding, second to none. The underlying story is absolutely captivating, as are the characters.At the conclusion of the Three Body Problem, we are left with an alien race, the Trisolarans, who have embarked on a four hundred year long trip across the galaxy, ostensibly to conquer and inhabit the Earth. Through use of their advanced technology, they have arrested the technological development of the human race and are able to eavesdrop on every aspect of life on Earth. Faced with this scenario, how does the human race respond? As the years pass and different generations are tasked with coming up with strategies to face the threat, the author continues, time and again, to impress with his vision and the elements of human psychology and philosophy that he employs.Most impressive to me is the author’s ability to deal with these philosophical and technological themes in such a way that the reader can easily follow and appreciate. To me, he walks the perfect line between being intellectually challenging, yet approachable (unlike some of Frank Herbert’s work, which was more than I could handle).So, if you have read The Three Body Problem and are trying to decide whether to proceed on to this second installment, I cannot encourage you strongly enough to do so. If you have not read the Three Body Problem, I urge you to do so, with the knowledge that the follow up book will be worth the effort. The Dark Forest wraps up very nicely and could easily be the end of the story; however this is a trilogy, so I will gladly continue to the final chapter, hoping not to be disappointed. The Dark Forest is a terribly difficult act to follow.

I'm still reading book 3, but I had to take a minute to come back and say Cixin Liu is a genius. Book 1 of this series, The Three-Body Problem, is an imaginative and quite original book that deserves all the awards it has received. But, even with all that being true, it doesn't hold a candle to The Dark Forest which is in my opinion in contention to be the best sci-fi book ever written.I'll tell you how good Death's End is when I'm done with it, but (if you haven't) buy book 1 today, and if you've read the first one and are not sure whether or not to continue, think no further. This trilogy should be required reading in schools. Liu is the first author I'm aware of to reach the heights of Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. In fact I think he's better than Clarke and gives Asimov a run for his money.Liu's take on the Fermi Paradox in this series, particularly the second book, is so consequential that it makes his detours into discussions of euthanasia seem almost frivolous in comparison. He has probably invented an entirely new field of study in these novels. (He calls it Cosmic Sociology.) Along the way he dispatches themes like gender identity; loyalty; the relationship between being a sentient/intelligent species and being a culture or a people; the relationship between totalitarianism and democracy in times of crisis; the meaning of culture; the potential soul of atheism; nationalism; the hypocrisy of popular demands; the burdens of leadership; the relative importance of the environment; child rearing; the tugs of war between love and duty; death vs. living forever; faith in the future; and a bunch of others as if they were mere footnotes in the grand scheme of things, hitting you with revelatory meditations in almost every chapter.

Bought on Day 1 and finished on Day 3. It was a fantastic Sci-fi reading experience from beginning right to the end. You just couldn't stop feeling surprised and stunned by those choices and decisions made by the characters all the time, regardless they matter or not. The unthinkable scope of the plot and sceneries just repeatedly stroke your imagination and nerves like forever. Twists and turns in both large and small scale are blended into the whole logical story-line, which is so well-arranged that it turns out to be better than a mind-bending blockbuster movie.Comparing with the first volume, the new translator localized the writing in a more "English" way, making the reading for English speakers feel like reading an original Western literature instead of an Eastern-Western translation, which may not be too good for "preserving" the original writing, but... there isn't too many Chinese culture/history related content in this second book anyway.One more thing to add, unlike vivid human beings appear in regular full-length fictions, most characters Liu sculpted in his works look like symbols instead, which I fancy is on purpose, being probably the only "obstacle" for this book in the way of becoming a true saluter to those real Classics back in the Golden Age of Science Fiction.Definitely a powerful Hugo/Nebular contender and a likely winner next year.For your own sakes, read it yourselves.

If you want to know the history of the transcontinental railroad, this book is for you. It is extremely detailed and seems to be the best researched of many books on the subject. But it's a tome and requires strong wrists to hold the book, especially if you are reading in bed. The amount of detail and number of characters can be a challenge to the reader, but that only reflects the magnitude of the undertaking. This is the full story from concept through completion.People interested in this topic might also read "Nothing Like It in the World" by Steven Ambrose which is less of a challenge and a fun read. In addition, the TV series "Hell on Wheels" (on AMC) tells a entertaining fictional story set in the context of the Wild West environment that surrounded the "end of the track" towns that popped to service the railroad workers.

This a hard review to write. First of all, it's very difficult to criticize Mr. Bain as he has clearly put forth a tremendous amount of effort and time in telling this story. The amount of information and detail here is astounding, he clearly knows his subject. But that effort is ultimately this book's undoing in my opinion.Simply put, this book is a real chore to read with WAY too many details of minutiae that often really doesn't directly pertain to the main storyline. One of example of the "side trips" the author takes the reader on are details of battles with various Native American tribes that really had nothing to do with building the railroad. I truly believe this book could have been cut in half and with judicious editing, one could have still gotten the point of the story across. Or in the alternative, perhaps it should have been put forth as a two volume set, one volume focusing on the actual building and engineering challenges of the transcontinental railroad, and the other volume could have been about the political and financial machinations going on behind the scenes. Unfortunately Empire Express focuses way too much on the latter and not enough on the former.Ultimately I gave up and was unable to finish the book. A damned shame too, as I have an interest in this subject matter, I picked the book up the Golden Spike National Historic site, and I love the AMC show Hell On Wheels. (Imagine my surprise to learn the character Thomas Durant was based on an actual person.) But the storyline just become overwhelming with minutiae and not at all enjoyable to read. This from someone who loves all manner of history books.In summary, this is a very scholarly work that serious historians or students doing a research project would find invaluable. But for the average reader, the person reading for his own entertainment, or self enrichment, it just becomes too painful to try to take it all in. A shame too, because there is some very good information in there, but it will take a lot of time and patience to find it. If you have a lot time to sit down and read uninterrupted for long stretches, you may enjoy this book. If have more limited time, or only a passing interest in the subject matter, you probably want to pass on this title.

This is a huge book and I'm wading through it as we speak. I'm a few hundred pages into it and still fascinated. Writing is crisp and even humorous in a sly way. Lots of interesting pictures too. I bought this one used and the price was well, well worth it (something like $5 with shipping). I decided to pick up the book after watching a couple of seasons of "Hell on Wheels." I like to be better informed when I'm watching TV shows that make some claim to being based on history. In any case, how the railroads got from here to there (East-Midwest-West Coasts) is a extremely fascinating story. It was the Internet of the time, if you think about it.

Especially through the Sierras.Gave it 3 stars for lack of maps to go with the text.
