I believe the story to be well written. The vocabulary used is not to difficult for the middle grades. Lisa did a phenomenal job translating this book. The length of the book I feel is just right. It provides enough details without being overly graphic. I do not want to say that I enjoyed this book as it is difficult to enjoy reading something so horrifying. I did find it an interesting testimony of love, strength and determination to survive against all odds. With the message that Eva spreads we have a book that could have left us depressed but instead leaves us a message of hope. It is an astounding testimony that dreams can come true if we never give up and that forgiveness does not mean forgetting. It means moving forward in love and remembering for peace.* I received no compensation for this review. All opinions expressed are my own.*
I had a special connection as my 11 yr old granddaughter was in a play called "Number the stars" and Eva Kor came to Richmond IN to speak during that time. So she was able to meet the author and realize how Eva and her sister felt and survived during that terrible time in history. The book was very easy to read and follow and although it didn't go into too much technical detail, it gave a special insight on survival from the horror of being "chosen" for experimentation by the evil Dr.Mengele and his henchmen.
I would recommend this book to all people in all walks of life. Sometimes we become complacent in our lives and forget the horrors that so many have faced or are currently facing. We can only heal through remembering these atrocities and learning to be better people than those whole process such disregard for human decency and equality. The strength that all survivors possess is truly an amazing thing to behold. Never give up on living, we owe that much to those that didn't survive.
This book was amazing. Honestly I read it in one night, the night before a morning class (and I'm in college so that says something --- the story is captivating and you will not put it down). You will cry a lot if you have even an ounce of soul.
Eva Moses Joe visited a small high school near where I live today. She was in Hope, Indiana and told her story to about 700 children and 100 adults. I had to miss seeing her in person; however, a couple of my friends posted online photos and such of her visit. I decided to purchase her book on my kindle, and I read it in a little over two hours. Myself being an identical twin, this story touched my soul, and shows true human strength, love, and eventually forgiveness. Touching.
Very good read, sad book; however, necessary for the historical context. Also another book to follow this one is "five chimneys". We should never forget these first hand accounts as history is trying to be rewritten by the liberals and deniers.
This story of Holocaust survivor is from the viewpoint of a child. A twin, Eva and her sister, were chosen by Doctor Death himself to be apart of his hideous medical experiments. Twins were prized at Auschwitz; although this did not keep them from being starved, neglected, and abused. A must read to fit all the pieces of the puzzle called The Holocaust together in your mind. That is, if anyone can wrap their brain around this atrocity.
I'm a middle school teacher, and I bought this book to include in my Accelerated Reading library. This book was a perfect match for my middle school kids--it was easy to read, nonfiction, and it gives an account of life in the camps and Dr. Mengele's experiments without being gory. Exactly what I was looking to use with my 7th grade learning support students. Also, the kids love it--as soon as it's checked back in, someone else is waiting to sign it back out. This book is definitely not meant for an in-depth study of Mengele, but it is excellent for middle school and introducing students to the Holocaust.
What an amazing story of survival!!! It's hard to imagine anyone survived the tortures that took place in Auschwitz. I love true stories of WWII and this was no different. It gets better when you realize the Eva Mozes Kor is still alive and operates a Holocaust Museum in Terre Haute, Indiana!!! She tells her story the every Saturday. I went with my wife to hear her speak and it was incredible. If you like reading about WWII and the Holocaust this is a good book and it's a super quick read.
