My 11yo daughter has all the Phoebe and her Unicorn books, and wanted to try this book, by the same author. It did not disappoint! She loves this book as well.

My 7 year old son loves this book.

Ozy and Millie is a graphic novel, or collection of comic strips, by Dana Simpson. While I’ve never read any of her other works and really only picked this one up because of my great love of all things fox related, I did think it was quite an adorable read for the afternoon today. Simpson appears to have gained popularity with Phoebe and her Unicorn and while cute looking, I don’t think I’ll be reading them. Unicorns just aren’t my thing.Ozy and Millie follows two fox fifth graders as they get into all sorts of fiasco-driven fun, go to school, and bug their parents. And it was pretty dang adorable. I love the artwork and I’m especially in love with Ozy’s dad, Llewellyn, who is a dragon. As Ozy is a fox, he’s also adopted. Llewellyn is great fun to read when he’s around and his text takes on an entirely different font than the others to match a more medieval theme which I thought was super cool. While I did adore the book, I do feel that it doesn’t really fit the middlegrade genre. Despite the ages of the main characters, there are a lot of discussions they have throughout the strips that just don’t seem to match the age level of children who might end up reading them. One comic directly references Machiavelli which I frankly don’t think many fifth graders will even have heard of by this point in their lives, let alone know what it means. That being said, there were a few that I feel kids would enjoy and understand.Overall, it’s a cute work and one that I certainly wouldn’t mind having on my shelf, though I wouldn’t go out of my way to get my hands on a copy. Simpson is a genuinely talent artist, though I do believe her story fits more of a teen audience. And though I know this particular book was meant more as a collection of old works than as a full story, I was a little disappointed at not having more of an introduction to the characters themselves at the beginning as I felt the whole thing began by sort of throwing readers straight into something with very little background (though the introductory letter from the author at the beginning was an appreciated touch).

Being a huge fan of Phoebe and Her Unicorn, I couldn’t resist checking out the previous strip the author did, and unfortunately I couldn’t keep myself from making some comparisons. Still, it was more than funny enough on its own.The dragon is either “wise or messing with everyone.” Author’s words. Ozy is way too Zen even for a cartoon. Millie somehow reminds me of Phoebe, but more in her look than in her manner. Personality-wise they’re completely polar opposites. Their moms, on the other hand, are a lot alike, and I’m okay with that. On the third foot, Phoebe’s dad and the dragon have nothing in common. Maybe the dragon and the unicorn. . .On to the best parts. There’s little difference between a hippie and a vase.“I really don’t understand laws.” “Yes, I’ve noticed that about you.”I’m with Millie: I’d like a six-foot-tall grape too. There’s a lot more academic philosophy here than in. . . any comic strip ever.I don’t think the Tao would have approved of stealing a cookie, but Ozy was right to take it.“You are a little girl.” “Oh right.”I wanna see what an exaggerated sigh looks on paper!“The DMV administrator shoots like an Imperial stormtrooper.” I very much doubt that sentence will ever see the light of day in any other situation. Similarly, the glossary at the end is unlikely to be repeated. At the end there’s a tutorial on how to draw the characters. Remember, “He’s a chill fox.”The artwork doesn’t vary all that much, though it does seem to have more diversity than the unicorn one. The one thing I didn’t like was the dragon’s font; it was difficult to make out.If this had been written by someone else, or if I’d seen it before I became a fan of Phoebe and Her Unicorn, I probably would have liked it a lot more. The problem is in not being able to stop myself from comparing. Still a solid read, though.

**Thanks NetGalley for lending us this digital copy!**Ivan and I love Dana Simpson! Well, we have read and enjoyed all the Phoebe and Her Unicorn books, and when I spotted this, I had to get it for Ivan. He was excited, too.Well, he read it in one day and insisted on my reading it, too. Which I planned, but he really had fun with it.It had a lot of the same tone of Phoebe and her Unicorn, but it was geared toward an older crowd. The backstory says she wrote these when she was younger. It's still perfectly fine for the younger crowd.I liked it a lot, it made me laugh. Ivan loved it, and he's 9. He was excited to share and talk about it, and you can't ask for higher praise than that!

'Ozy and Millie' by Dana Simpson is a collection of strips pulled from the comics 10 year history and presented here in color. In an introduction by the creator, we learn her thoughts on reprinting older work. It's fun for fans, but can make an artist cringe. These comics are indeed lots of fun, and the creator really has no reason to cringe.Ozy and Millie are foxes. Ozy is adopted, so his father is a dragon. It's a world full of anthropomorphic animals and these two characters are in school. They both have their bullies and they both have each other to help cope with things. The same humor (sight gags, word puns, and general silliness) that is in Phoebe and her Unicorn is in here, so if you love that series, you should check this one out as well.I received a review copy of this ebook from Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

Review

The Language of New Media, Manovich surpasses previous prophets of the new media by uncovering the way that what is new is often rooted in a transformation and rediscovery of the slumbering utopian energies of the past. Manovich not only describes the recent history of new media, but its foundations, and its intellectual and aesthetic debts to such aspects of media history as russian constructivism and early cinema. Striking while the media is still hot, Manovich sees creative possibilites and transformation, yet never falls into the trap of thinking new media have no history or have single-handedly created a new world. His vision is unique, risky, and compelling.―Tom Gunning, Professor Art History and Cinema and Media, University of ChicagoThis is simply the best book that I have read on the aesthetics of new media. Other authors have often made exaggerated and superficial claims about the novelty of art and design in the new digital technologies. Manovich offers us instead a sober and yet always fresh and exciting analysis of the relationships between new media and their predecessors, especially cinema. As a practicing artist as well as a theorist and historian of media, Manovich can explain the continuities with the past. This sense of history enables him to argue convincingly for the qualities of new media that he believes are truly new.―Jay David Bolter, Wesley Chair of New Media, Georgia Institute of Technology, author with Richard Grusin of RemediationSpend some of your precious time with this book, as time, in every sense, will prove that its succinct and careful analysis of new media is the most fundamental yet dynamic yet made. Lev Manovich's book is an intelligent object; its fractals capacitate a complex, yet accessible linguistic gateway to the history of new media forms, pushing these out of isolation towards tgeir relevant epistemologies in cinema, software development, programming languages, writing and communications theory, yet acknowledging unique qualities. It is a must for filmmakers, communications theorists, television producers, computer scientists, programmers, cultural critics, artists, cultural historians, and designers.―Sara Diamond, Artistic Director, Media and Visual Arts, The Banff CentreLev Manovich's The Language of New Media is a major event for those of us interested in understanding the nature of electronic literature and art. Deeply informed by an intimate knowledge of computer programming, architecture, and procedures, The Language of New Media combnies theoretical sophistication with rigorous inquiry into electronic processes of signification. Among its contributions are a much more precise vocabulary of New Media than is currently in use within cultural and literary studies; original and brilliant insights into the relation between narrative and database; and a comprehensive treatment of the means by which the cybernetic circuit between user and computer transfigures reading and writing. This is essential reading for anyone interested in literary and artistic uses of new media.―N. Katherine Hayles, Professor of English, and Design and New Media, University of California

Book was in great shape. Very boring and hard to read

Manovich's treatment of computer-media expressive forms is intelligent and entirely worthy of serious engagement. At crucial points, however, he makes leaps and grand assertions without proper demonstration. For example, he speaks of the database as an expressive form, and as the key computer-mediated form of our time. So, why not explain how in the world a database is expressive, or how it makes meaning? He says it is naturally opposed to narrative--they are "natural enemies"--but how precisely does database accomplish anything for anyone without narrative (or interpretation, which is closely related)? What is a database without narrative? I just don't see how he has shown what he asserts. At the same time, i think much of the virtue of this book is through its suggestions rather than its water-tight argumentation. That can make it a fertile reading experience, but frustrating all the same. Books like this one get people talking, even if they are wrong on a lot of points. We need people to be speculative and a bit "loose" like much of this book is, but one must be prepared to read it critically and with some caution.

Waste of money

This book offers many useful concepts to serve as substract to analyse the new media, specially through comparing them to cinematographic and computer history.

I chose this rating, because this book turned out to be exactly what I wanted. Manovich puts digital media into historic and theoretical contexts which begin to make some sense to a decidedly analog mind. His speculations about aspects of digital media provide keynotes for what to watch for in the future and ways to think about changes in human perception as they evolve. In the process of elucidating digital culture, Manovich provides ample footnotes, bibliography, and references for his and opposing views for further consideration.

COMPLEXITY OF ANALYSIS MADE IT DIFFICULT TO GET INTO FOR ME. but will make continued effort to get into it.

In this fine work of literature, Mr. Manovich illustrates that he can talk a lot about computers, even though he doesn't know anything about them. He makes a plethora of fallacious statements, such as when he argues that all digital media must be discrete and contain only discrete objects, neglecting one can define a continuous geometry using discrete coefficients. If his statment were true, there'd be no way to draw a circle in Adobe Illustrator, but I know I've done that before! Read this book if you don't know what a computer is and won't mind misinformation presented to prove points that are stupid and worthless anyway.

Like pulling teeth. Far worse than a root canal.
