This was not only a very compelling story written extremely well, it was performed magnificently by the narrator. It paints a wonderfully descriptive journey in a part of our country that I've had the pleasure of visiting and the book does a great job describing those areas and putting you in the middle of the scene. The narrator also does an amazing job of moving between characters, one of whom is an Editor for a NY publisher and the other who is a Russian Buddhist Monk. He flips so easily between the two you can picture both of them talking to one another.Most importantly, this journey is one that reveals many wise observations about the human existence, through both of the main characters' thoughts and actions.I loved this book and was sad when it finished. I learned a lot about life listening to it and this may be the first fiction audible book that I re-listen to again a second time.

I really enjoyed this 3rd in the series of "...... with the Buddha". For me Roland Merullo strikes just the right note with his gentle humour. The characters are really likeable. In fact I think he is one of those authors who likes his characters and can make them readily accessible to his readers.If you are comfortable with Buddhist philosophy or want to know more about it, Merullo's books give you some simple information without over-selling Buddhism. You can see Buddhism in action with the patient and loving Rinpoche as well as Otto (his student) trying and sometimes failing to follow Rinpoche's guidance.I have downloaded some other books of Roland Merullo and look forward to more enjoyment and humour.

Merullo hits the nail on the head: East and West must shake hands; embrace, if you will, the two major parts of what it means to be human. For us, as Americans (and these novels are a love letter to the land and people here in the States), that means realizing and accepting that our internal life, health, happiness, ease, is as real as logic and scientific certainty. Accepting that each thing we DO, ACT ON, must be based on an integration, a wholeness of mind, body and spirit. If Tibet and America personify these aspects of conscious, self-reflecting beings in a wide, wide, changing universe, then their marriage is in keeping with this goal. Thank you, Roland Merullo, Otto Ringling, for this awesome journey thru breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The writing was mellilfuous, and I also liked the story and the road trip. The landscape truly came alive in Merullo's book. Same thing with the characters. I loved it. I thought the story was a little jarring at the end, but the author prepares it for that turn. He's also very good and shaping up little memorable scenes. Quite an enjoyable read. I guess I was expecting more spiritual insights, but then again the book works as it is. If it were heavier on the spirituality, it probably wouldn't have been that enjoyable to read.

I waited for this book to be published as I absolutely loved the previous two books written about the same characters. Both Breakfast With Buddha and Lunch With Buddha are easily favorites and I've shared them with others. Merullo is a superb writer, expressing ideas in a easily understandable rhythm, with profound undertones. These books can be enjoyed by both men and women and can introduce readers to 'the spiritual journey' in an easy to read and unthreatening way. Each takes you on a road trip with a delightful rimpoche, which is entertaining, provokes chuckles and provides food for thought. I am now reading other books by this author because I love the depth and realities, personal challenges and insights of his characters.

I loved the the Buddha series. These three engaging stories had a big impact on my interior world. Merullo, through his characters Otto and Rinpoche, brought structure to a belief system I have wrestled with for many years. Merullo's writing not only led to hours of reading with a smile on my face and regular bursts of laughter but also to adding a consistent and continuing warm sense of humor to me. As a writer, I appreciate the work that went into into Breakfast with Buddha, Lunch with Buddha, and Dinner with Buddha. There's a perfect balance of effective communication and entertainment. I hope to follow the now-bald Otto on his journey in another book or books.

A Wonderful read. I rated Breakfast With Buddha and Lunch With Buddha 5 stars and this book 4 stars. It had a different feel to it and perhaps left me hanging a little too much. It is still a very worthwhile read and although it's fiction, wouldn't it be nice if it wasn't? I hope the author opts to write a sequel to this book. How about A Midnight Refrigerator Raid With Buddha.

Further adventures of Otto, transplanted New York book editor, and his brother-in-law Rinpoche, a Buddhist holy man, tricky wrestler and fledgling student of Americana who also knows his way around a Vegas craps table. They're on a fast-paced and funny road trip through the American West. This is the best of the three "Buddha" books, and I really loved the first two as well. You don't need to have read the other two books first, but you'll want to check them out after you savor this witty and profound work.

A very nice book from a great architect. Good photos. There is one plan for each house. Too bad there are not more drawings. Sections and details must be beautiful but not included. But still the one plan for each shows their brilliance. Biggest problem is that while the print quality of the book is good the glue on the binding is cheap. Had the book for 12 hours and it's already coming apart. The layout of the book is great but the publishers botched it in the end with a cheap bind. Too bad. Would be five stars but this will not be a bound book for long....two stars.

Loved the book, hated the binding (It's a heavy book with thick pages and the glued-on cover fell off the first day. Aggravating, especially in a book of this overall quality.) As far as the book's content goes, it's gorgeous. Lake/Flato are designing some extraordinary spaces and they're well-documented in the photos and text, which are more evenly balanced than in some books of this type. I especially liked the Brown and the Dunning desert houses, but almost all are interesting and novel in approach in one way or another, especially in the way they are set into the landscape. I wdo wish they'd designed the legs so the highest adjustment buttons weren't partially set inside the bench seat. They're not the easiest to get to, but at least you'll only need to change the leg heights once. I do wish the floor plans had better labelling, though, as many of them have some spaces that aren't in the key and other titles are uninformative. 'Storage' or 'studio', for instance, don't tell you much about the actual use... Overall, however, this is an exceptional record of the firm's work to date, and of interest to any design aficionado.

I love the architecture. Beautiful use of materials, great integration into the landscape. I also really like that the division between indoor and outdoor is blurred very creatively. I'd always liked the work when I saw it in the magazines but this book takes my understanding of the firm's work to a new level. I gave it 4 stars because second floor plans and scale are not included.

The imagery and descriptions are exquisite but as other reviewers have commented, the binding is unfortunate. I left it open overnight and the following morning pages were already falling out...

They are a wonderful team. Been watching them in books and articles for years. They just get better and better at making art out of simplicity and comfort out of unexpected ways.I have a 40 foot, 9.5 feet high shipping container in Marfa. Think They would take the job?

I think the book is excellent, beautifully portraying the architecture in text and photographs. However, the first time I fully opened the book the binding just fell apart, and I have a book that is not going to last and is so hard to handle. I was leaving the country so did not have time to return it. If you have a sound copy and would take it back when I return, I would appreciate having a good copy for my library.

Their designs are creative and brilliant. They break projects down to their necessary components, bring them into existing landscape (versus the other way around) all the while using sustainable forethought. I am a big fan of their work. This book is mostly pictures with descriptions of the projects. I wish I knew more about the thought processes and the planning that created these gems.

The content of the book is fine, but looking through it the first time the cover came unglued and I'm afraid that the pages will begin to come loose as well. POOR production and representation of University of Texas press and of a fine design firm.Very disappointed

Escohotado does a great job at reviewing the changing status of various substances throughout the world and throughout the ages. Mind altering substances have fascinated and frightened humanity since the dawn of time, and have most likely been pivotal in the emergence of shamanism and primitive religions. Contrary to pagan religions, monotheisms have been generally suspicious of mind alteration, leading to various forms of prohibition throughout the ages, up to the temperance movements in the 19th century US, and global prohibition of certain psychoactive substances and the infamous War on Drugs in the 20th century. The end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21 century have witnessed a spectacular return of the repressed, with the upsurge of narco-trafficking and illegal drugs on one hand, and the explosion of psychopharmacology on the other. The book could use some updating as things have changed quite a bit since it publication, and prohibitionism is coming under growing pressure. For some update, I would suggest World War D - The Case against prohibitionism, roadmap to controlled re-legalization. To the best of my knowledge, "World War-D" is the only book looking beyond the War on Drugs, and explaining the potential pitfalls and benefits of alternatives.

I believe Antonio has nailed the issue and the true interests behind the scenes: The obscure desire to control and profit from prohibition by dark government in alliance with religious hierarchies, the military and private corporations. The failed war on drugs is really a war against the individual and collective liberties. His historical and philosophical perspective is useful for anyone trying to understand the core of the matter. The book is well documented and fun to read. Congratulations to Antonio Escohotado.

If you are looking for a good world history of drugs, this is the best I've been able to find. It's not a perfect book. For example, a bibliography would be nice. Given the book is a translation, the writing is sometimes clunky. However, the material is hard to match. I really learned a lot about the topic. If the complete Spanish version had been translated into English, I would jump right into that as well. Read and enjoy!

The author did a magnificent job of writing and editing down this version of his larger work written in Spanish only! It makes me want to also read his larger book on this subject!

This is a very interesting read. It provides a nice history of abused substances over the course of time. For me, the middle section started to get a little dry, but once we got to semi-modern times (1700-1800's) it got really interesting. This book will challenge your thinking on the current way we regulate drugs. It is a great book.
