I have two copies of "Story" to ensure it is always nearby.Out of a dozen or so books on writing, I found McKee's "Story" thoroughly enlightening.It can be a challenge to comprehend in places - but worth the extra effort!In terms of characters driving narrative, review chapter 7 and examine writing w/in "the gap".I found it easier to grasp McKee by writing one paragraph summaries of each chapter as I progressed.It may be helpful to think of each chapter as a separate vignette of knowledge.I suggest reading the chapters in this order: 1-3, 8, 4, 7, 5-6, 15, 9, 10-11, 14, 18, 12-13, 16-17(the above order was suggested to me in fact by L.S.)Also, try reading "Save the Cat", contrast/compare w/ "Story" and refer to the "Bible" by Trottier.On a side note, the slip cover is absolutely awful. Throw it away.The hardcover book w/out the slip cover is a tasteful blue-purple w/ STORY and McKee in gold print.(see attached photo)

I don't know why, but I actually feel emotional about this book. I've had it for a long time and read it over and over, turned down the top corners and bottom corners, marked up passages with different colored pens, and I'm not even a screenwriter. I read it for fiction writing and to strengthen my editing skills. It's like a family member I feel great gratitude and appreciation for.His bias against the avant-garde was shocking to me at first and it took time to get past that, but I forgave him. He does include meta and anti-novel type structures, at least.I recommend this book to my fiction students all the time. What a gem.

I truly regret that I hadn't digested this book sooner. I bought the book when I finally managed, after years of hoping and wishing, to attend the STORY seminar in Los Angeles in March, 2018. Having the book along through the 3-day closed seminar with restrictions on the use of electronic devices helped me to fully immerse myself into the content while listening to Robert McKee explain and exemplify the strategies and concepts. I write screenplays and novels and find that though STORY indicates a concentration on "Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting," the concepts and strategies have already proved useful for writing any genre. And not only has STORY and Mr. McKee's seminar given me a new outlook on my writing, I also have found the materials useful in teaching literary analysis to my high school students and will utilize the material for my Creative Writing class next school year. How any (real) writer could discount this book as not offering "much help" or would suggest that writers should "steer clear of it" makes absolutely no sense . . .

For me _Story_ by Robert McKee is an incredibly useful book in terms of analyzing stories after the fact. If you read a popular, well-crafted book or view a movie or TV show with those qualities and want to understand how it works, what makes it tick, you would be hard pressed to find a better book, and you should just order this book now -- you're in for a treat.If you're an aspiring writer, _Story_ may be extremely helpful for you (as evidenced by the many glowing reviews here), but it might also be problematic in ways you don't expect. It's from this perspective that I'm writing this review. Writing fiction is an incredibly personal experience, so to be clear I'm not saying that people who love this book as a writing how-to are wrong. I think if you have a certain mindset or approach to writing, this book will be extremely helpful to you. But if you don't, you may want to approach _Story_ with some caution (which I'll explain in a minute).Some fiction writers employ a very methodical, intellectual approach, putting stories together like watchmakers carefully constructing a complex timepiece, creating detailed outlines first and using them as blueprints to build their stories. This is a completely valid way to work -- in fact, I'm envious of such writers and wish it worked for me. If you already know that you are this sort of writer, you should just order _Story_ right now, because you almost certainly are gonna love it and find it incredibly useful.Some writers employ a more organic, intuitive approach, where creating a story is an unstructured process of discovery (the so-called "pantsers", because they work from "the seat of their pants"). In my view this is also a perfectly valid way to work, not inherently better or worse than being a dedicated outliner. If you know that you're this sort of writer, you may find _Story_ intellectually compelling (because it surely is), but it might also mess with your head (see below).I personally am neither a hardcore outliner nor a committed pantser. I am finding that I produce my best, most satisfying work when I bounce back and forth between the two approaches. I can't go full organic because I get lost in the work and find that I constantly have 16 ideas that I can't choose between, and each one of those leads to 16 other ideas, and so on. On the other hand, for me employing a rigorous outlining approach is too intellect-driven. I feel I lose the creative spark and fascination that made me want to write the story in the fist place. Instead, deliberately or not, I find myself "solving" my story structure like a sudoku puzzle, overtaken with concern about hitting the right points in the right way at the right time, and things like, losing control of my story that way.Which brings me back to _Story_. As someone else here said, McKee isn't telling you, "These are rules! You must follow them!" He's describing principles of storytelling he's developed over years and years of experience and analysis. The thing is, his approach is extremely methodical and intellect-driven, it has a gravity that's going to pull you in that direction. It's so intellectually appealing it's like your brain can't let go of it. Like I said earlier, if your writing mindset and approach are on the same wavelength as what McKee teaches, this is gonna be awesome for you and you're going to love it. If you're not, this can really mess with your head and your writing for a bit.That said, this is good material even for someone like me, and I am glad I read it. There are useful ideas here, and it's good to be aware of them even if you're not going to go about building stories the way McKee teaches. But if you go about putting McKee's tools into practice and it just doesn't work for you, or you're simply not that kind of writer to begin with, don't panic if it feels like your brain has been taken over by McKee for a while. :-) This too shall pass, and afterwards you will probably feel like you have learned things that will be useful to you at some point down the road.

Canes are really simple to make but it's amazing how intricate and beautiful patterns can be made by putting them together.This is a very inspiring book with lots of pictures and great directions, making it pretty easy to cut, pull, push and combine canes into wonderful and original designs.Some of the most exciting work since I started with polymer clay. I highly reccommend this book.

Nice Ideas, however I found that some were a retelling of the very basic canes. I would have liked to see more complex canes and more color ( but that is just me). I would recommend this to any new users. It is a good book to learn from. The instructions were clear to me, however I have been working with polymer clay for over 8 yrs. Still learning....

I like this book for its clearness and simplicity when explaining the different processes that takes making canework.As the author says, it is not so important the resulting picture of the cane as to understand its work process and give to readers ideas and inspiration to increase their creativeness.I recommend this book because it fullfills what its title says very clearly: EXPLORING CANE WORK.

I'm new to polymer clay. This book was insightful and provides great examples of techniques, clearly explained. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

This book does a good job of showing step by step instructions for explanations to building canes. It helps to have a bit of knowledge about Polymer Clay to use it. The price makes it worthwhile to add it to your Clay library.

Book has a lot information in a small book. There are plenty of examples and exercises that you can do to help with your cane work. There is information on color too. Since color play such an important role in cane work, it is important to know how to put colors together. I'm glad I purchased this book.

This is a great book for those of us who don't make many canes and forget how. The instructions are very simple and concise, and easy to understand, with some variations and tips on the designs. Thanks

My 10 year old son did not really like to read. He would get graphic novels from the school library but he mostly just looked at the pictures. I would try reading books with him but he would loose interest. This summer I decided that we would read this book. I made a deal with him that I would read 4 pages and he would read 2. He likes superheroes so I thought that this would be interesting to him because it was like a real life superhero. We read when I had time during the summer. By the middle of the book he was coming to me asking to read instead of me telling him it was time to read. By the end of the book he was very excited to get to the next one. He started reading the second book on his own because I was taking too long. He is on book three now. He is still very interested and often choses to read instead of watching tv. I am trying to keep up with him and I love the books as well. As a result of actually finding enjoyment in reading these books, I have also noticed that he is now actually reading the graphic novels that he brings home. I can tell he is no longer just looking at the pictures but he is enjoying the story. I did originally buy the e-book version but my son prefers to have the actual book.

Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 by Richard Paul Evans is the first in the Michael Vey series for teens. This was Mr. Evans' first foray into the world of teen fiction and it was very well done. It's a bit different from other teen books in there isn't the horror and darkness you often encounter. Instead, there's an underlying feeling of hope. There are villains certainly and villains that you would love to hate, but it has an underlying feeling of hope and inspiration. Yet it's not "preachy" either. It strikes just the right balance of conflict, personal growth, and positive messages for teens.The protagonist, Michael Vey, has Tourette's Syndrome. It's rare to find a book where the protagonist is dealing with some sort of syndrome and dealing with it successfully. It's not hidden away in a dark corner. It's shown as something that Michael has to deal with and yet it's not the sole focus of the story. The teenage years are full of angst and uncertainty anyway and to add in a chronic health condition just makes it worse. This book shows teens that they're not alone in their struggles and they can be dealt with.Finally, this book holds your attention. It grabs you and doesn't let go until the end. I read it in one setting because I couldn't put it down! If you have teens in your life and you want them to be reading something other than vampires and zombies, perhaps consider introducing them to the Michael Vey series!

I really enjoyed this book. We purchased it for a teen book club book, and while the teens took issue with some of the story line (I agree parts of it were super cheesy), it was still a very enjoyable read. It was clean, and there was enough character development and action to keep me interested. There isn't a lot of explanation about why things happened, but perhaps later books go into more detail with that. I really liked it.

i just decided to pick this book up since im currently not reading anything else and know its series. The cover always intrigued me when i walked by. This book starts off very slow and childish. Michael is a "loser" with torettes who has a crush on the hottest girl in school (of course) and a nerd for a friend. Eventually the book picks up and we find out about Michael's powers and learn more from his past, this is where you get hooked and can't stop reading. It ends with high hopes for this series, like Harry Potter i'm sure we will see this group of kids mature quickly and lose the innocence.

Michael Vey was a 15 year old boy with electrical powers. He didn't tell anybody except his friend Ostin (and of course his mother knew about it). When he was getting bullied by this group of boys, he electrocuted them from anger. While this happened this girl Taylor was watching, since she had powers too she asked him questions about it and they decided he would come over to her house and talk about it. He found out she had powers like him, but she could read minds, reboot people's minds, and ect. Ostin, Taylor, and Michael had created the clan called the Electroclan, and they would have meetings. Michael and Taylor were invited to this really expensive school which they would take for free. They then find out that it wasn't really a school, but someone trying to capture them. Soon after that, Taylor was kidnapped. When she was at the place where they took her, she found out she had a twin and that they could literally get anything they would want. But they would have to do what Hatch (the one "hunting" them) said. Taylor was told to do something that could get someone killed so she refused. There were a lot of other glows there, and Taylor had a lot of fun until Hatch would make her do something she didn't want to do. Ostin, Michael, and Michael's mother went to eat some place. When they came out Hatch came. He kidnaps Michael's mother, and leaves Michael there. All of this happened when Ostin was inside looking for his sweatshirt. So Ostin and Michael have no other choice but to take Jack and Wade with them because they're the only ones with a car that would drive them. It took a long time to get there, but they finally got there. Michael and Ostin went inside looking for Taylor and Michael's mother. Michael gets caught and was given a choice to either join them or have his mother die. He couldn't choose then, so they kept him in Cell 25 where he was tortured. He finally get's set free of that cell and is put in this room with Taylor and Ostin. Hatch comes in with Zeus and tries to get Michael to join them. Hatch leaves Zeus to do it, but Michael and Taylor win him over. His mother was shocked but she survived. The four of them then had a lot of trouble getting themselves out, but they did it. Worth every penny! Great tips for now and the future, especially the closet "vision board" . I even purchased two copies later for mom & sister as impromptu gifts- they were well received (something they might not buy for themselves but genuinely appreciated). This book is packed with useful tips for all body types from a real professional at a fraction of a one-on-one consultation. I can easily browse a chapter at a time - when I have time. My closet (and my attitude) has dramatically changed for the better since acquiring this book ... and I haven't even finished reading it cover to cover!

Thank you Marian Rothschild for putting together a smart, comprehensive, and witty guide book on how to express your inter-self with style. I believe you said it right when you said: "Personal style is one way to represent on the outside who we are on the inside". This book illustrates on many levels how taking pride in the way we look has a exponential effect on how we feel and how others feel about us. Looking Good Now and Always provides the insight, tools, guidelines and tips for establishing individual style based on personal preferences, appropriateness and professional mandates. A must read for anyone who wants to feel good about themselves and make a good impression on others.

Great information presented in an easy to read format. Full of practical tips that are easy to implement but will make a huge difference in your appearance and confidence.

I don't know how other customers came to give this book five stars. I think they must be friends of the author or publisher! And, incidentally, it does seem to have been self-published on the cheap, which is a definite minus.Problems I have with this book include first, there are absolutely no color photos at all! A serious omission in a style book which talks about color! There are a few rather unclear black and white snapshots inserted next to the text, and that's all. A real problem when you are trying to visualize what a color is like, or what a style would look like on a real person as opposed to a small black and white photo.Second, the text is really basic and didn't tell me anything I didn't know. I hoped I would learn more about expressing my own style in the clothes I wear. I have worked through the Style Statement book, which is excellent, and have come up with my statement key words, but I wanted concrete help in choosing clothes that would express this look in everyday life. Well, guess what - zilch here! Just a short questionnaire, which again is very basic, and doesn't give any advice or hints at all in how to select clothing that will embody your chosen image words. What good is that?And as far as Ms Rothschild's color theory goes, she's seriously off base here. She says it's only the color of your hair that counts! And this is nonsense. All your coloring counts - your eyes, your skin and your hair all seen together. You need to find your color type based on all these factors. The Sci-Art system admittedly uses only the skintone as a guide, but this is much more useful than using the hair color, as this book does. You can always change your hair color, and if you have, it isn't a guide at all as to your own basic coloring. What you need to know is your season, and then which hair colors look best with that. Here, some color photos are essential, but without them I found this book's color section absolutely useless.I also don't get the over-emphasis on wearing pants (trousers to Englishwomen like me) all the time. Do American women not wear skirts any more? I never wear any kind of trousers except old jeans for gardening. They don't suit my style or my body shape, but there's not much advice for me in this case, except that pencil skirts just above the knee could look good. Yes, they could, but I already knew that, and what about other lengths? I love ankle-length maxis, and there's nothing at all about them.As for the advice on age-appropriate dressing, which I had hoped would be useful, you can forget that, too. The book says just don't look vulgar and don't show lots of skin. We all know that, I guess, but hey, I really don't see why an older lady shouldn't channel her inner Dolly Parton if she wants to! Go for it, if you are retired and love country music, or whatever else turns you on. Be free. Express your inner essence - isn't that what this book was supposed to be about? Instead, it's all about fitting in and looking approprate, and consequently very boring.My advice: don't buy it, get the Style Statement book instead plus any Color Me Beautiful books, and you'll be well away!

Paddling along spectacular sea cliffs for 10 days didn’t hurt. As it was, I read the book in the afternoons after paddling while clinging to shade on wild and remote beaches, and I just loved it. Part was reminiscing about various trips of my own and comparing notes, and part of it was enjoying the exploration and discovery process that Professor Johnson has been going through over the last two decades.While the book does give the practical information necessary to see the geological places that it discusses, I wouldn’t view the book as a field guide any more than I would view Annie Dillard’s work as a field guide to Tinker Creek. It is a close and careful look at the rocks and fossils and then it walks you through the thought and discovery process that allows the geologic details of the area to be unraveled. It was fun to go along with Johnson on his journeys, even while I had only passing interest in which areas had ancient upwelling and which were ancient bays (I do like fossil reefs, however). Also, I have no particular plans to seek out the spots he writes about, or do the described hikes, but this doesn’t diminish the fun about reading about them.Funny enough, my favorite chapter was one where I had no connection, and in which not much happened. It was the hike across rugged terrain to distant dunes to see if they were made of wind blown shells. There were many false starts through myriad dirt tracks and arroyos and only through perseverance did they finally reach the obscure, out of the way, and not all that tall dunes. It was a science quest and exploration in a very small but also very pure way. The kicker was that the dune turned out not to be marine sediment at all. But rather than taking this as a colossal failure, in the true spirit of science it opened up unexpected new lines of thought and ultimately a new view of ice age climate in the area.There are many natural history books that look in detail at the plants and animals of Baja or anywhere for that matter, but there are few that give the same attention to the rocks and fossils. This book does that, and provides a clear view into Baja’s layout and history. I recommend it thoroughly for anyone who has explored in Baja and wondered about the rocks, and anyone who really wants to understand how field geology is done.

This is a great little book about a part of the world where little has been written about the geology and natural history. Markes Johnson is a retired college professor and it is clear he knows how to teach (his students were lucky to have him as a teacher!). The writing style is outgoing and the book is written as if your good friend is taking you on a personal tour of the area. The illustrations are great and very complementary to the text. As a geologist myself, I appreciate the care with which the book is written (from a technical standpoint) and I have actually cited it in my own research. Having said that, however, the book is certainly not TOO technical or specialized--a visitor to Baja California who has any minimum amount of curiosity about how the landscape and biota evolved there will find this book a delight. Highly recommended!

Good piece of academic geological work written in a conversational, anecdotal style. Not what I was thinking it was. Not an "off trail" guide to Baja.

Markes Johnson knows more about the geology of Baja than just about anyone else. I have been fortunate enough to be in the field with Dr. Johnson in the Punta Chivato area of Baja California Sur, and his vast knowledge and enthusiasm about the area comes through very well in this wonderful book! A must buy if you plan to travel to the areas detailed in the book. Highly recommended!

Well written by a man that truly loves Baja, but best for anyone that is already interested in geology. Recommended for frequent Baja travelers.

Seems too technical at times but is giving me ideas for hikes and explorations over the next 2 months.

An exceptional read that unravels many mysteries of Baja geology while also capturing the essence of the history and people of the Peninsula -- and the spiritual satisfaction and enlightenment that comes with spending time in nature.

This is one of the best books I've read on Baja, or on natural history in general. Readers are taken into the beautiful and remote back country of Baja California to learn about animals, plants and geology though the eyes (and mind) of a first-rate naturalist. Follow the author's mind as he recognizes curious patterns in nature, then sets out to investigate and understand them. Johnson is one of the top Baja geologists working today, and his field studies on this enchanted peninsula are done in collaboration with students and two other top geologists, Jorge Ledesma-Vázauez and David Backus. Follow these scientists through the land of Boojums and stromatolites as they wind their way down the peninsula. This wonderful little book is a most enjoyable read. And you'll learn a lot about geology and natural history along the way.

I ask my kids questions from these cards every day. My older son (11) really enjoys being quizzed, and my younger one (9) just tolerates it. But we homeschool so he doesn't have a choice :)Sadly, they have no grade 8 questions, so my older son is out of luck and I guess we have to move on to Trivial Pursuit questions or something.In addition to question cards for upper grades, it would be nice if the answer pages included a bit more explanation. They would be more educational and useful that way. Brainquest makes their American History trivia cards, and those ones do have more explanation on the answer pages, which is often helpful and interesting!

Got this to replace grade 6 for my 11yo. Many questions are not 7th grade level. For example, Where in the human body are tonsils located? Other questions that say which and give choices are easily guessed. The math Qs are good prompting pencil and paper. The subject categories your student needs can be focused on and are learning and informative.

Both of my grandchildren love the questions. The ten year old, going into 6th grade can answer more than half of the questions and despite that he doesn't love school, he finds this fun. The 12 year old is going into 7th grade, can answer more questions, and loves the challenge. They make the kids think and prompt discussions often.

Always fun and challenging for 7th graders and beyond. I admit some questions were a challenge. Makes trivia fun and easy to use. I use in a classroom setting to challenge students during slow, or in-between times. Rewards of a candy bar or granola bar with high scores for the week make students pay attention. It has also took on a challenge on some topics that are presented and used as side homework projects. Fun !

Nephew is a Brain Quest fan, and had this on his Xmas wish list. He seemed very pleased to get it. I can't personally attest to this particular edition, but I'm sure he'll enjoy it. His mom tells me she believes this product lines has helped him in school.

I am going through the Questions and Answers and will be using them at an Assisted Living location where I hold a weekly Trivial Pursuit meeting. When I told them there would be 7th (and 6th) Grade questions/answers, they were a little apprehensive -- for good reason, I might add. A number of the Q&As had me stumped! That's good!!

At this grade level...much of the material contained within is irrelevant as the stuff they cover in this grade is nearly all non-applicable. its just like buying a trivial pursuit game.

Unfortunately, many of the questions (except the math ones) were not challenging for my 12 year old soon to be 7th grader. He is smart, but not crazy smart, but these questions seemed better suited to 5th graders.
