I “saved” reading this book until I was a couple days into a sea-kayak trip from Loreto to Las Paz. I’ve been lucky enough to have had my fair share of adventures in Baja and, as anyone who has traveled in Baja can attest, you cannot travel far without coming face to face with geology. Paddling along spectacular sea cliffs for 10 days didn’t hurt. As it was, I read the book in the afternoons after paddling while clinging to shade on wild and remote beaches, and I just loved it. Part was reminiscing about various trips of my own and comparing notes, and part of it was enjoying the exploration and discovery process that Professor Johnson has been going through over the last two decades.While the book does give the practical information necessary to see the geological places that it discusses, I wouldn’t view the book as a field guide any more than I would view Annie Dillard’s work as a field guide to Tinker Creek. It is a close and careful look at the rocks and fossils and then it walks you through the thought and discovery process that allows the geologic details of the area to be unraveled. It was fun to go along with Johnson on his journeys, even while I had only passing interest in which areas had ancient upwelling and which were ancient bays (I do like fossil reefs, however). Also, I have no particular plans to seek out the spots he writes about, or do the described hikes, but this doesn’t diminish the fun about reading about them.Funny enough, my favorite chapter was one where I had no connection, and in which not much happened. It was the hike across rugged terrain to distant dunes to see if they were made of wind blown shells. There were many false starts through myriad dirt tracks and arroyos and only through perseverance did they finally reach the obscure, out of the way, and not all that tall dunes. It was a science quest and exploration in a very small but also very pure way. The kicker was that the dune turned out not to be marine sediment at all. But rather than taking this as a colossal failure, in the true spirit of science it opened up unexpected new lines of thought and ultimately a new view of ice age climate in the area.There are many natural history books that look in detail at the plants and animals of Baja or anywhere for that matter, but there are few that give the same attention to the rocks and fossils. This book does that, and provides a clear view into Baja’s layout and history. I recommend it thoroughly for anyone who has explored in Baja and wondered about the rocks, and anyone who really wants to understand how field geology is done.

This is a great little book about a part of the world where little has been written about the geology and natural history. Markes Johnson is a retired college professor and it is clear he knows how to teach (his students were lucky to have him as a teacher!). The writing style is outgoing and the book is written as if your good friend is taking you on a personal tour of the area. The illustrations are great and very complementary to the text. As a geologist myself, I appreciate the care with which the book is written (from a technical standpoint) and I have actually cited it in my own research. Having said that, however, the book is certainly not TOO technical or specialized--a visitor to Baja California who has any minimum amount of curiosity about how the landscape and biota evolved there will find this book a delight. Highly recommended!

Good piece of academic geological work written in a conversational, anecdotal style. Not what I was thinking it was. Not an "off trail" guide to Baja.

Markes Johnson knows more about the geology of Baja than just about anyone else. I have been fortunate enough to be in the field with Dr. Johnson in the Punta Chivato area of Baja California Sur, and his vast knowledge and enthusiasm about the area comes through very well in this wonderful book! A must buy if you plan to travel to the areas detailed in the book. Highly recommended!

Well written by a man that truly loves Baja, but best for anyone that is already interested in geology. Recommended for frequent Baja travelers.

Seems too technical at times but is giving me ideas for hikes and explorations over the next 2 months.

An exceptional read that unravels many mysteries of Baja geology while also capturing the essence of the history and people of the Peninsula -- and the spiritual satisfaction and enlightenment that comes with spending time in nature.

This is one of the best books I've read on Baja, or on natural history in general. Readers are taken into the beautiful and remote back country of Baja California to learn about animals, plants and geology though the eyes (and mind) of a first-rate naturalist. Follow the author's mind as he recognizes curious patterns in nature, then sets out to investigate and understand them. Johnson is one of the top Baja geologists working today, and his field studies on this enchanted peninsula are done in collaboration with students and two other top geologists, Jorge Ledesma-Vázauez and David Backus. Follow these scientists through the land of Boojums and stromatolites as they wind their way down the peninsula. This wonderful little book is a most enjoyable read. And you'll learn a lot about geology and natural history along the way.

I ask my kids questions from these cards every day. My older son (11) really enjoys being quizzed, and my younger one (9) just tolerates it. But we homeschool so he doesn't have a choice :)Sadly, they have no grade 8 questions, so my older son is out of luck and I guess we have to move on to Trivial Pursuit questions or something.In addition to question cards for upper grades, it would be nice if the answer pages included a bit more explanation. They would be more educational and useful that way. Brainquest makes their American History trivia cards, and those ones do have more explanation on the answer pages, which is often helpful and interesting!

Got this to replace grade 6 for my 11yo. Many questions are not 7th grade level. For example, Where in the human body are tonsils located? Other questions that say which and give choices are easily guessed. The math Qs are good prompting pencil and paper. The subject categories your student needs can be focused on and are learning and informative.

Both of my grandchildren love the questions. The ten year old, going into 6th grade can answer more than half of the questions and despite that he doesn't love school, he finds this fun. The 12 year old is going into 7th grade, can answer more questions, and loves the challenge. They make the kids think and prompt discussions often.

Always fun and challenging for 7th graders and beyond. I admit some questions were a challenge. Makes trivia fun and easy to use. I use in a classroom setting to challenge students during slow, or in-between times. Rewards of a candy bar or granola bar with high scores for the week make students pay attention. It has also took on a challenge on some topics that are presented and used as side homework projects. Fun !

Nephew is a Brain Quest fan, and had this on his Xmas wish list. He seemed very pleased to get it. I can't personally attest to this particular edition, but I'm sure he'll enjoy it. His mom tells me she believes this product lines has helped him in school.

I am going through the Questions and Answers and will be using them at an Assisted Living location where I hold a weekly Trivial Pursuit meeting. When I told them there would be 7th (and 6th) Grade questions/answers, they were a little apprehensive -- for good reason, I might add. A number of the Q&As had me stumped! That's good!!

At this grade level...much of the material contained within is irrelevant as the stuff they cover in this grade is nearly all non-applicable. its just like buying a trivial pursuit game.

Unfortunately, many of the questions (except the math ones) were not challenging for my 12 year old soon to be 7th grader. He is smart, but not crazy smart, but these questions seemed better suited to 5th graders.

This is not just a good book. This is an important book. One of the first things I realized in reading this book by Malcolm Gladwell is that his position is diametrically opposite from that of Dr. Ben Carson, who through his campaign for the presidency stated that "poverty is a state of mind." Carson emphasized that despite all odds he was able to pull himself out of poverty and become a neurosurgeon and accomplish the things he did.Gladwell's book states early that success doesn't happen in a vacuum. It isn't based on intelligence, but on a variety of factors, and he uses multiple examples to demonstrate that we as a nation could have many more successful people in our country if we were to accept that it takes a village to make successes out of our children. In fact, he shows that hard work and opportunity in almost all cases are more important than intelligence.One story tells of the Canadian hockey league and the fascinating statistic that the vast majority of all successful hockey players are born in January, February or March. Why? Because the cutoff date for signing children is January 1, and those born in the first three months have a distinct advantage in age, experience and size in relation to those they play against. That same cutoff date is used by other countries, such as the Czech Republic, for not only hockey but soccer as well, which means that children born in the later part of the year consistently are overlooked when it comes to team sports. It's a built-in bias.These biases are all around us, and determine who succeeds or fails, constantly. In addition, the bias of a culture has a significant effect on how well a student does. Gladwell talks about the belief that Asians are better at math, which he shows is because their languages are more number-friendly, leading children to count earlier, and which make math simpler. In addition, he shows the inherent tradition of hard work of southern China had resulted in a work ethic for their descendants that continues today.Many of the stories are supported with statistics. One of the most eye-opening to me was his observation of the impact on summer vacation. Statistics show that the amount that lower-, middle-, and upper-class students learn in elementary school each year isn't that significantly different. But when you compare what they learn or forget over summer vacation, there is a significant discrepancy. Upper-class parents keep their children busy with lessons and classes all summer, while in most situations lower and even middle-class students don't do much during the summer and often forget much of what they have learned the previous year. As the summers add up, the problem compounds. And so the difference between upper, middle and lower class widens.The book is significant, easy to read, and extremely thought provoking. I highly recommend it.

While this book was enjoyable for this trivia alone, Gladwell manages to change our perception of success entirely, because timing, circumstance, and even luck are major factors that decide a person’s success. Sometimes the disadvantaged actually have all the advantages in the world just because they happened to be born in the right place at the right time. We have to examine all the factors surrounding a successful individual which all had to come together in order for him or her to be an outlier.Gladwell bases most of his anecdotes and explanations on research conducted by others and I wish he would have gone into more detail about how these studies were conducted and how reliable they actually are but this is the only complaint I have about this book. He is a very charming and enthusiastic story teller, he thoroughly explains his thought process without rambling and kept me interested and engaged throughout the whole book. Overall I enjoyed reading Outliers and I would definitely recommend it to others.

Robert Greene’s The 48 Laws of Power is a self-help book that offers advice on how to gain and maintain power. Based on Instaread’s Summary of the 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene, however, the book sounds more like a how-to book for a confidence artist than a book that anyone with a sense of integrity and morals should want to follow. Greene uses parables and examples of historical figures to illustrate his points, but his advice to be selectively honest, use misdirection, and maintain an excess of secrecy hardly seem the traits one would want in a leader, or even a colleague. In an age when scandals and corruption taint politics and society, this isn’t a book I would recommend to my students, other than as a ‘how-not-to’ guide. With so few minutes in the day, who has time to read whole books? I sure don't, but with these book summaries, it gives me a chance to get a quick synopsis of the book, hitting the highlights. Regarding this book, The 48 Laws of Power, you get an insight into how those in power have made their way to the top. Its disturbing to learn of the underhanded and selfish ways past leaders have worked their way to power, but does it really surprise me? Unfortunately, not really. It actually helps you clear the dirt off your glasses to take a better look at your current leaders (at work, locally, politically, etc) to see if they employ some of these strategies. I, for one, know genuine leaders that don't need to use people, but also know some who got there in other, not so honest ways as described in the text.About the summary itself, it does an effective job of hitting the highlights of the book, but it could have done a slightly better job at fully discussing the key takeaways. Some of the analysis was a little thin. Overall, it was quick way to learn about the book though. I received the summary for my honest review.

The book is excellent. It explains our energy past to elucidate our energy present and future. And it’s quite well written.However, don’t buy this or any other book with graphs, photos, or illustrations on the Kindle app. This book has many such features which I’m sure would aid in comprehending the material, if only they were rendered at a size larger than my little fingernail. As it stands, it is impossible to even see what most of the diagrams and photos are meant to convey. And yes, I tried to no avail to enlarge them.Amazon really needs to fix this. For now, though, I’d advise folks to avoid trying to read even marginally technical books on the Kindle app.

I read this book based upon a recommendation in the Wall Street Journal and was not disappointed. The author covers the evolution from wood to coal to steam to electricity to nuclear and does a pretty good job of looking at the upsides and downsides of each. Each energy source has done some harm but lots of good. We need to keep evolving to make the world a better place. We’ve done it before.

Excellent book. I enjoy the way Rhodes brings historical characters to life. I do recommend it. I have two issues, both having to do with the Kindle version. First, the illustrations are hard enough to view when you CAN expand them. I'd say half the illustrations in this book could not be expanded so were essentially worthless little blobs on my screen. Second, I was immersed in reading with about 4 hrs and 45% remaining to read when the narrative suddenly ended. Huh? Turns out that last 45% is acknowledgments, bibliography, notes and index. Kudos to Rhodes for being so thorough but I was pretty let down by my perceived loss of material. I wasn't really interested in spending 4hrs perusing the extras. I think this Kindle quirk needs to change.

This is a great walk through the evolution of energy and a view of what is to come. Even if you think you know everything about how we got to where we are and the path forward, you will be surprised at how the author ties it all together. this book is a well balanced view of what we face and offers some thoughts on the path forward. It does a very good job in the discussion of today's energy picture to bring out the hidden biases that have been shaping the public discussion. There were some surprises in that section for me.

Richard Rhodes is well known for careful research and clear writing in his several non-fiction books. This book is no exception. What makes it particularly interesting is his customary and illuminating use of narratives about individuals to illustrate the larger historical movements that he describes. Happily, the book is well documented so that the reader may follow up on details without excess searching for references. The topic is timely, and the book is valuable.

If you ever wondered how it is that you turn on a switch an electricity flows into your home, or how it evolved that we heat our homes, power our factories or drive our cars this is a great read. The author does an excellent job of explaining the evolution of energy and power from pre-industrial revolution England, through the industrial revolution to the industrial revolution in America (eg manufacturing steel and aluminum, generating and transmission of electricity to gasoline as we know it today).

Free flowing and highly readable, indeed engrossing with many fascinating vignettes about historical events that shaped energy markets. And I was pleasantly surprised this was not an ideological treatise about fossil fuels and climate change, in fact reading between the lines it seemed to me that because of their inability to be scaled without huge subsidies the author is highly skeptical about renewable sources like wind and solar, waxing instead about the lost promise of nuclear, lost because in a democracy irrational fears (in this case about radioactivity) become accepted in to the public discourse as hard fact. He probably needed to be circumspect about his skepticism of wind and solar for fear of being skewered alive on the altar of political correctness by the "climate scientist" cabal, always fearful of some counterargument to the Faith jeopardizing their research grants.....

This is a fascinating, well documented history of energy and its evolution. The author is absolutely brilliant and explains not only the history but explanations of how things work and the inventors and personalities behind them. Some parts are somewhat technical, but you can gloss over them.
