I liked that it came looking about 99% as good as new! Also, a pleasant surprise was that the edition was a later one with revisions. I liked that, too. Very pleased with the outcome. Came right on time as was expected. And, the price was quite reasonable for me.

This edition is almost certainly an older English translation of CAPITAL (translators Moore and Aveling) and NOT the more recent, superior translation by Ben Fowkes, published by Penguin Books. Evidently Amazon doesn't now offer that newer translation for sale, except in the Kindle edition. (You'll notice that nowhere on the copyright page of this edition does it even mention the translators.) The old, Moore and Aveling translation is good as far as it goes, but it is almost certainly in the public domain now. The fly by night publisher of the $9.00 paperback here offered for sale must be raking in the profits, since it has 'acquired' the rights for this edition of CAPITAL for nothing! (If you read the fine print at the bottom of the publisher's blurb by scrolling down to the bottom of the blurb you'll notice that it warns you that the blurb refers to an "alternate" paperback edition of the book, NOT the Penguin edition that IS for sale as a Kindle book. If I were you, I'd consider buying the Kindle book (the price isn't too bad) but WAIT for Amazon the get access again to the Penguin, Ben Fowkes translation in order to buy a bound copy..

If you invest the substantialamount of time and prodigious effort needed to master it, you will definitely come to understand why Marxists become Marxists, and you may very well become one yourself. At the very least, you'll see the world differently, and you'll have a firmer grasp on the character of our contemporary world, not just its economic make-up, but in a socially expansive way. It's hard to imagine anyone reading the book carefully and with a modicum of understanding and coming away with the judgment that this is merely an ideologically motivated, long-winded exercise in willful self-deception and the deception of others. If you encounter someone who characterized Marx as a willfully wrong-headed ideologue, you may safely assume that you're dealing with someone who has not read Capital.Capital Volume 1 is, in fact, a richly informative and very difficult piece of world-class research. I imagine that most readers who take its full measure will come back to it again and again. I can't imagine doing justice to Capital Volume 1 without putting forth the kind of effort that makes for the creation of a life-long connection. Marx himself claims to have sacrificed his health, happiness, and family to writing the book. This has the pathetic sound of self-pitying exaggeration. But given what I know of Marx and the necessarily prodigious demands of the kind of work he produced, I'm sure he's being dispassionately truthful.You may be disappointed to find that Capital is much less polemical than it is rigorously analytical. That was my first response. For the long term, however, I realized the book is a keeper, and I acknowledged that I'd have to look elsewhere for a call-to-arms that is not also embedded in massive learning. It's true, of course that Marx was an active professional revolutionary, but he was also a world-class scholar with a prodigiously cultivated mind. Reading Marx makes me want to spend a year or two in the library of the British Museum, where Marx did his best scholarship.Marx and Charles Darwin exchanged fairly frequent correspondence. Everyone knows that Darwin transformed our understanding of the world and our place in it. Much the same is true of Marx's contribution to human knowledge. It's interesting to acknowledge that social and religious conservatism were barriers to the rightful dissemination of both. That Marx maintained an ongoing relationship with others of undeniable genius, such as Darwin, bespeaks Marx's own intellectual prowess and reflects his status as a wonderfully original thinker. In his own authentic way, Marx was at least as much a brilliant scientist as Darwin. Darwin changed the way we thought about ourselves, but Marx changed the way we live.

It is hard to write a small review. I can't put 100 pages of notes on this book. It is a book to help anyone understand how capital works. Volume two is more about the circulation process. Please read it and don't quit after chapter 3. It is a long book and it is somewhat complicated. I mean, it's laid out like someone just copy and pasted the text, printed and bound it as cheaply as possible. There is no copy right information or publisher listed anywhere, no table of contents, and it's overall just awkwardly laid out. The cherry on top is that I didn't even receive the complete book, it just abruptly stops mid sentence and the last few sections are missing completely. Absolute garbage, please don't buy this version. Amazon needs to have a little bit of quality control with the products they sling because this isn't even a legitimate publication.

This turned out to be a romance novel of a sort. The couple were happy in the end. The story was suspenseful. I enjoyed this read.

This book was a very quick read and I love how they incorporated Harriet Gunman! Wish it was another book to this.

While the story gives one a glimpse of the horrors of slavery and its unholy treatment of people, along with a rare, almost unrealistic and beautiful ending, I enjoyed the book. This author seems to have a special insight into the emotional and spiritual side of the characters that I found authentic. The characters are well developed. The book is well written. I felt like I was there with the characters involved in their lives as part of the story.

I liked the way the writer kept me on the edge of my seat. The only thing missing was revenge on the Mazda who deserves to suffer just as he made others suffer. His cruelty and dominance over black people was horrible. I wish the half black, half white man had lived. I would love to read a book centered around him. Revenge is Mine faith the Lord.

The MC, Casey, is awesome. She eats her life, marches to her own drummer and relies on herself and her friends to overcome any obstacles. She inspires love and light everywhere she goes, except maybe in her best friend's girlfriend. Additionally Beth wrote my all-time favorite secondary character in Ben. She hit every note exactly right with him as he traversed his grief from the loss of his soul mate and went on a journey that left him with something to live for anyway. Grab this book with both hands and take a big ole bite!

Without even meaning to, I took today off and ended up devouring Eating Life with no regrets. Well, maybe one: I don't know when I'll get another morsel from this talented author! ALL her books are excellent, honest, slice-of-life portrayals of interesting characters, but this one took the cake! You'll find yourself inwardly rooting for them, crying for their hardships, and laughing at the sheer genius of their portraiture as they make their way through the story. And, in the end, you'll be thankful you tagged along for a bit.If you're hungry for honest character portraiture in modern writing, then help yourself to this title. You'll come back for seconds -- or fourths! -- by snapping up her other titles, too.

I have a rule. After a year of spending over a hundred bucks a month on book downloads, I joined Kindle Unlimited and promised myself I would only buy one book per month outside their offerings. Eating Life was my January purchase. I enjoyed this book so thoroughly that after finishing it I immediately downloaded another of her novels, The Love Sucks Club (also a 5 star).This story touches on so many aspects of what it is to be in mid-life: the ruts, dreams, losses, and vision of the shrinking future and our desire to fill it with what we finally realize matters before we reach our final destination.I'm a rule breaker, and I don't care. I loved this novel.

Marvelous read. Beth, once again, captivated my complete attentIon. It's nice to read a book so well written and edited that I'm not pulled away with a bunch of errors. The storyline is so free it made me jealous at times. It definitely brought this gypsy soul's life into perspective. Thank you, Beth!

Running from everything, always on the go but you can't hide from love. Wow, what a great journey and with fascinating characters. Casey is an amazing, adventurous woman with a great personality. Of course she has flaws and that makes her even more interesting. I loved how she lives her life and I liked her attitude. This was a journey I wish I could travel with Casey. The story was heartwarming, hilarious, sad, passionate and inspiring. Everything is very vividly described. A true treasure and just perfect. I highly recommend it.

A wild emotional ride through the lives of four intriguing (and at times incorrigible!) characters. They are definitely eating life and you will be devouring pages. It was a pleasure to get to know Beth Burnett's deeply felt, fun-loving voice.

I loved this book! I loved the characters, the lighthearted moments, the heartbreaking moments, the "oh wow I didn't see that coming" moments and the story's overall affirmation of living an authentic life.

In “Eating Life,” Burnett manages to touch the depths of our souls, and validates the reader in loving their truest life. This book is both a page turner and a book you want to savor, fully recognizing everything that is held within.

This was a really fun story of three best friends, Kate from Chicago, Nasreen,a Muslim-American, with roots in Pakistan and Krishna, A Hindu-American with family in India, but all living in Chicago. The story is told, back and forth in two time periods 1987-1998.The 1987 part of the story is where Kate is able to go with her two friends to India and Pakistan for eight weeks in the summer, they are still in high school at the time. It is a coming of age story, beautifully told, with vivid descriptions of what transpires during their trips to both countries. You definitely get a feel for what it is like in the countries through Kate's eyes, as she describes it from the viewpoint of someone seeing it for the first time, and loving the chaos and color around her. She has become family to her two friends families and is loved by all, they attend weddings and parties, and Kate gets to dress in the native fashion. She also develops her first real crush while on this trip.In 1998, now adults and finding careers of their own, but always still there for each other. We see how their lives develop and all of the heartbreaks, frustrations, secrets and happy occasions play out, from Marriages, loss and re-found love, it is a journey that pulls them all closer to each other. This was a really timely book as it gives you the feeling that people of different religions, ethnicity and views can all get along. Beautifully told story.I would like to thank the Author for the signed copy of this book and to goodreads Giveaways, for the chance to read an ARC.

I liked this book, I didn’t connect with it, but I liked it. The reason I couldn’t connect was the fact that I am a brown person and having grown up reading about other cultures and societies, it was a kind of different experience and took me some time to digest. And it was a good experience, don’t take me wrong, but it was too new for a reader like me for the shock to dissolve real quick.The author does a brilliant job of sketching a picture of friendships that span cultures and religions (I myself have friends from all religions and cultures and we are extremely close), the struggles of growing up, first loves and crushes, second chances and oh the wonders of traveling and seeing the world.Mehendi Tides was also a bit weird to read in ways, not the bad kind, but it gave me a perspective on how the Pakistani and Indian families living in the west live. I have cousins who live in the US, and even though I see glimpses of their life there every now and then, it’s never experienced like this or through the eyes of an American. Also, this also shows that even living in the West, the brown families, though similar on basic level, can drastically be different at other levels. A few of the events and incidents mentioned in the book weren’t how I expected brown families living in the west to be a part of or be exposed to, so it was kind of refreshing and a different view point from what I had in mind.All in all a good read, and I would definitely recommend to readers, who, like me, were taken form the time they read the theme of the book: friendship!I give this book 3.90 stars.I am extremely grateful for the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

They each have their own struggles with trying to meet the expectations of their family while trying to lead a life they want to live for themselves. These expectations they are trying to meet range from what career they will pursue in college, religious expectations, and even who they are expected to love. The girls often lean on each other and use each other for sounding boards, to vent their frustrations and to test their ideas. As much as they rely upon each other, they have their secrets as well. As they face hardships and make decisions, these secrets find their way out. The girls are put in a situation that causes them to evaluate their friendships, wondering why there were secrets between them, and having to decide if they can look past these secrets and continue their friendships.As a white American woman, who has never been outside of my own country, I felt the descriptions of the trip to India were thoroughly descriptive and made it easy to envision being there with the girls. Everything is described from what is seen, heard, smelled, and felt along the way. I also have limited experience with religions outside of Christianity, so I really enjoyed getting a look into the religious traditions and attire as described in the story. I have always enjoyed learning about other cultures, and this was no exception. It was well written and makes me want to learn more.

About the Author

The son of a country doctor, Harry Sinclair Lewis (1885–1951) was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. His childhood and early youth were spent in the Midwest, and later he attended Yale University, where he was editor of the literary magazine. After graduating in 1907, he worked as a reporter and in editorial positions at various newspapers, magazines, and publishing houses from the East Coast to California. He was able to give this work up after a few of his stories had appeared in magazines and his first novel, Our Mr. Wrenn (1914), had been published. Main Street (1920) was his first really successful novel, and his reputation was secured by the publication of Babbitt (1922). Lewis was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Arrowsmith (1925) but refused to accept the honor, saying the prize was meant to go to a novel that celebrated the wholesomeness of American life, something his books did not do. He did accept, however, when in 1930 he became the first American writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. During the last part of his life, he spent a great deal of time in Europe and continued to write both novels and plays. In 1950, after completing his last novel, World So Wide (1951), he intended to take an extended tour but became ill and was forced to settle in Rome, where he spent some months working on his poems before dying. Michael Meyer, PhD, a professor of English at the University of Connecticut, previously taught at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the College of William and Mary. His scholarly articles have appeared in such periodicals as American Literature, Studies in the American Renaissance, and Virginia Quarterly Review. An internationally recognized authority on Henry David Thoreau, he is a former president of the Thoreau Society and the coauthor of The New Thoreau Handbook, a standard reference. His first book, Several More Lives to Live: Thoreau’s Political Reputation in America, was awarded the Ralph Henry Gabriel Prize by the American Studies Association. In addition to The Bedford Introduction to Literature, his edited volumes include Frederick Douglass: The Narrative and Selected Writings.Gary Scharnhorst is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico, editor of American Literary Realism, and editor in alternating years of American Literary Scholarship.

What’s wrong with me? I majored in political science in college and grad school. I studied for a PhD, worked in state & local government & taught “American Government” for decades at various colleges in the Baltimore-Washington area. And, I did not read It Can't Happen Here [ICHH] until 2016. Finally, in the storm of the 2016 election, I read this book. Shame on me.This is a classic fictional novel by American Sinclair Lewis. Published during the rise of fascism [1935], it describes the rise of Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, a politician who defeats FDR to become US President. Windrip foments fear and promises drastic reforms while promoting a return to patriotism and "traditional" values. [“America First.”]Windrip takes complete control of the government and imposes totalitarian rule with the help of a ruthless paramilitary force, similar to Hitler’s SS. The novel's plot centers on journalist Doremus Jessup's opposition to the new regime and his subsequent struggle against it. [The Press vs. President]Some have emphasized a connection with Louisiana politician Huey Long, who was preparing to run for president in the 1936 election when he was assassinated in 1935 just prior to the novel's publication. Over the years, ICHH has been compared to FDR’s internment camps, Nixon’s Watergate affair, and even the 2016 Donald Trump campaign. Following the 2016 US presidential election, sales of ICHH surged significantly as it made various bestseller lists. And now that #45 is 100+ days into his term, it still resonates loudly. President Windrip outlaws dissent, puts political enemies in concentration camps, and trains and arms a paramilitary force called the Minute Men, who carry out his wishes. One of his first acts is to eliminate the influence of the United States Congress. In addition, his administration curtails women's and minority rights, and eliminates individual states by subdividing the country into administrative sectors. Early in the story, Doremus states: “”Yes, I agree it’s a serious time. With all the discontent there is in the country to wash him into office, Sen. Windrip has got an excellent chance to be elected President…. And, if he is, probably his gang of buzzards will get us into some war, just to grease their insane vanity and show the world we’re the huskiest nation going.” Is this 1935 or 2017 – fiction or fact; “alternative facts” or today’s headlines?PLEASE read or re-read this classic. You can decide for yourself whether it is prescient or relevant or just another political novel. It will not be a waste of your time.

Since it was written in a time when the English was somewhat different in America, the reader must adjustto the way Lewis wrote the book. However, old-timey sayings aside, this is an incredible piece of fiction.It Can't Happen Here parallels what an American regime, like that of Adolph Hitler's in Germany wouldbe like as it unfolded. The main character is a small town newspaper editor, who enjoys his life and theway things have gone in his town and state, for much of his life. Doremus Jessup, the main character, iseven able to convince himself to stay out of the way of an administration that becomes more and moreauthoritative and dictatorial. Unfortunately, things develop rapidly around the country and the regime'sbad deeds end up in Doremus' town and he's no longer able to ignore it.The ease at which this turns from a cozy and sleepy small town to outright war on any critical voice isquite drastic. There is tension and unease sprinkled here and there, but the reality hits Doremus andwhen it does, he starts to act in any way he can. The country is virtually a loss and men like Doremus,who just wanted to enjoy what they had accomplished in life and not become overly political, becamethe ones that begin the resistance. I'll say no more, so nothing is given away.I read this book over two days time and could not put it down. This is quite simply one of the most remarkableand prescient books I have read in years. I highly recommend this as a Political Science expert and policyanalyst. Thanks to my view of the world, this book was both chilling and thought provoking.

Many people seem to buy 1984 because of the recent manipulation of language / see alternative facts but I find Sinclair Lewis' book much more frightening. I read it many yeaars ago and have just given my copy to one of my children, but I want to read it again. Not that I expect it to give me any pleasure / it is truly disturbing and frightening. That's why everybody should read it.

Excellent and timely read. Though set during the Depression, Lewis paints a picture that is prescient and important for what we are living through today. Sinclair Lewis won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1930 and he is one of my favorite authors. All of his writing is empassioned and clear eyed, and he is reminicent of Dickens in his greatness. This, like Arrowsmith, Babbitt, Dodsworth, Elmer Gantry, and especially Main Street remain excellent and important inspirations for us even now!

It's almost like this book was read by Donald Trump (Or, let's be honest, it was read to him) and he thought that President Windrip was supposed to be the good guy. It's scary how much this fits Trump's statements - from whining about fake news to discussing ending any news that isn't pro-Trump to claiming to represent forgotten people to consorting with very specific elements that could be violent in their support of him. Read this book... It's well worth reading.

This story is as relevant today as it was when first written. Everyone, young and old, should read this at least once. It is thought-provoking and brings to light just how easily most everyday citizens can be slyly manipulated to believe maliciously manufactured lies. A story to never be forgotten.

I read this leading up to the 2016 election. I'm not looking to get into a political argument with anyone, but my motivation in reading this book was to see how a demagogue could take power in the United States. After finishing the book, I would best describe my mood as sullen. The story was good, and Lewis did a nice job of putting me into the moment. I would recommend this book to others.
