I had the privilege of working with Nicole's mother and also unfortunately her father. I knew a good bit of what is covered in her story but was still saddened by the depth of her father's betrayal and the effect it had on his children. The fact that she as well as her siblings have become very accomplished adults is a testimony to the will to not only survive but survive amazingly well. She captures her mother;s quirky sense of humor and certainly the dynamics of a family that certainly qualified as dysfunctional. Her mother was a beautiful woman who turned heads when she entered a room. Some friends and I went to her mother's tap dancing recital and wore t-shirts that said "Linda Harkin Fan Club - Atlanta Chapter". You will probably read this in one sitting, I think you will find that you can't put it down. I know I couldn't.
This personal glimpse into the inner workings of the Harkin family was interesting. At the beginning of the memoir I thought Linda was Nicole's step-mother until, a little later on, when it was explained how she came to call her mother by her first name. I've known people who refer to their parents by their given names and always found it odd and confusing. While I appreciated Nicole's honesty and insight, occasionally there were phrases that distracted me and took my attention away from what was on the page. And there were a few instances when, to this reader's mind, the wrong word was used. I was taught to use adjectives as modifiers, before nouns. I know they can be used after but since that's not common in the English language it kind of threw me off. Maybe that's a result of ineffective editing or proof reading, more likely the way things were worded is just the way her family spoke or a regional "dialect". For example when they moved to Montana it was stated she rode the "old school yellow bus" and when they went to Banff, Canada it was said Linda was smoking on "the balcony hotel room". Deciding if Linda should have back surgery it was said they hoped she'd have some "measure of life quality", which is not the usual way people say that. And when Nicole applied & was accepted to college and again when she needed to defer attending law school she used "admitted" when "accepted" is the norm. As she spoke about her relationship with her ex-husband, it was said Linda was getting "exercised" when it should have said "excited".
Truth be told, I have known the author since she was about 6. Her mother, Linda, had become my best friend. But, as an engineer, am very objective, so am being as honest as possible. When I met Nicole she stood straight up, thrust out her hand to shake mine, and said, Hi, I'm Nicole!". That pretty well describes her early maturity. I knew she was a very special kid who has become a very special woman and a talented author. For several years after that handshake, my Irish Setter and I spent most week ends at "the Hovel" (although I don't recall hearing that name). I knew and loved the family well. I didn't really know them until I read the book. That is why it is such at good read...Open and well written, it says some difficult things, but all done with honesty, understanding, forgiveness and an underlying sense of humor. I can't wait to read her next one, and I won't even be in that one.
I fell into this book. Immediately, Nicole Harkin immerses you into her life and that of her family. This book is a hard look at herself and her family. Harkin's ability to look back on herself objectively (or even harshly) is to be commended. She doesn't take the opportunity to make herself look better, and maybe even is a bit harsh on herself. But despite that, or maybe because of it, I found myself in tears mulitple times throughout. The girlfriend mentioned in the blurb is just the tip of everything, and Harkin does a great job looking back to her childhood while discussing these major later-life events. The flashbacks segue beautifully into more current events. While there is nothing life-altering and show-stopping abou this family, there is much to be related to and some just unfathomable unless you have really been there. This is a memoir, but the story is told with such richness that it flows like a novel. There is a depth to the family, and you know that even with all the details, there are hidden currents. I really really recommend this book. It'll take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, but the laid-bare soul of the family makes it all worth it. In a time where I'm flinging books aside left and right, this memoir caught and held my attention, to the point where I read it in a single sitting.
Tilting is a beautiful story. The reader is pulled into the world of the author and her loving, yet difficult relationships with parents and siblings. On the surface this will sound like a familiar story, however the actual events being shared are anything but ordinary. With honesty, humor, and often difficult self-reflection, Harkin's story brings out all of the best attributes of a well written memoir. There are lessons to be learned in the resiliency of the mother and of the children, and especially in the children's ability to forgive and to move on with happy and productive lives. Set aside an afternoon to read and enjoy this great book, you won't be disappointed!
There are lots of memoirs out there written by people from dysfunctional families/ parents. But this story is different, in that both parents had problems that resulted in life changing neglect of their children. By the end of it I felt certain that Nicole's father had some type of personality disorder, most likely with some narcissism included. The mother, Linda, was self-centered and just not loving or affectionate toward her children. I'm sure she had some undiagnosed pscyhological disorder also. It is amazing all the children got through it as well as they did. The book is beautifully written and definitely a page-turner. I had to make myself put it down each of the 4 or 5 evenings it took me to read it.
