About the Author
Matthew Goodman is the author of two other nonfiction books, The Sun and the Moon: The Remarkable True Account of Hoaxers, Showmen, Dueling Journalists, and Lunar Man-Bats in Nineteenth-Century New York and Jewish Food: The World at Table. The recipient of two MacDowell fellowships and one Yaddo fellowship, he has taught creative writing at numerous universities and workshops. He lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife and children.

I knew of Nellie Bly and her trip around the world but had never heard of Elisabeth Bisland before reading this fascinating and very engaging story. Nellie was the scrappy, up-from-poverty, adventurous early feminist who gained fame by posing as a mental patient to expose horrible conditions in an asylum of the time. Then her editors sent her to beat the "world record" of Jules Verne's Phineas Fogg of eighty days to circle the globe. What is less known is that a rival female journalist, with certain similarities to Bly (both had been raised in poor conditions and employed their wits to make their way in the world) and some very strong differences as well - left New York nine hours later to traverse the globe going in the opposite direction. The trip follows their journeys, the adventures, misfortunes, and great welcomes they received, and in so doing paints a picture of two very different young women. I won't spoil who won but it's so worth the read. I grew to like Elisabeth Bisland a great deal as I followed her story, and also the stories of both girls AFTER the famous race. I disagree with those reviewers which call out the travel details as "filler". I loved being on the journeys with these two women, and being immersed in the facinating world of Victorian culture. Highly recommended.
I read the prologue of this book in a bookstore while waiting for some friends, and while I didn't have the means to purchase it at the time I found myself thinking about it daily until I finally held my own copy.The story is fascinating and is written in such an engaging manner and at such a fast clip as to remain entertaining throughout, without the dry spells I often seem to hit somewhere near the middle. At the same time, it is packed with insight and information about the two travelers and their world and culture. I came away from this story feeling very well informed, not only about this trip but about things such as the origin of modern time zones, the conditions of coal stokers on those great Victorian steamships, and the struggle of female journalists to make it off society pages and into real reporting.With this book, Mathew Goodman has definitely gotten my attention as an author of historical narrative to keep my eye on
I had never heard this story before, it was a fascinating account of a round the world race between Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland in the 1890s using then commercially available transportation. Beautifully written and well-researched. The author has an incredible ability for describing the scenes where the events take place. Highly recommended.One of his other books, The Sun and the Moon, is from an earlier period around 1835 when PT Barnum and other scammers emerged in NYC. Just as well written and well researched, but a very different book.It led me to another of his books,
I grew up hearing the name Nellie Bly from time to time but had never known why she was famous. She rose from difficult economic circumstances to be an investigative journalist for Joseph Pulitzer's "World" newspaper. In November,1899 she boarded a ship, heading for England, in an attempt to beat the time set by Phileas Fogg for traveling around the world in Jules Verne's classic novel. On the same day, Elizabeth Bisland, a writer for Cosmopolitan Magazine set off by train in the opposite direction with the same goal in mind. I enjoyed this story of these two women racing around the world as fast as trains and steamships could take them. Mr. Goodman has done an excellent job of making history a turn-the-page thrill. He also gives us a biography of both women before and after the amazing race. My one disappointment with the book was that the race was not put in context to what was happening in the United States and around the world. If Mr. Goodman was limited in the number of pages he could write, which many authors are, I am glad he used them as he did. I give many books to friends or the local library, but "Eighty Days" is a keeper.
After reading this book in the public library online edition, I had to buy it!!! It reads like a novel, and the historic details are thrilling. I was so interested in the story of the construction of, and boating through, the Suez Canal that I'm now going to read a book all about history of the Suez Canal. And of course the stories about the Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland -- in the days when women reporters except on the "women's society" page were extremely rare -- are very exciting and fascinating. Another thing that really interests me is about Joseph Pulitzer's newspaper "The World." There reports way back in the 1880s of the wealthy not paying taxes; of police brutality running rampant. So much history that is exactly like what we are fighting against now, over 150 years later. Very discouraging, because a lot of people, including myself, believe that we can turn this around -- that it's a new phenomenon in the United States. NOT.
