We love this book! My three year old has requested it to be read over and over for almost two years now. We have a vast book collection, so the fact that she chooses this one so often really shows how much she loves it. The pictures are great, just like the story. There are only a few sentences per page, so it is perfect for young readers. We love all Tomie books, but this one is our favorite. In fact, I am looking for a small St. Pascual statue to keep in my kitchen so that when my little girl is all grown up I will still have a reminder of all our happy readings of Pascual and the Kitchen Angels.

This story was great for reading to my first grade Sunday School class when we were talking about angels and guardian angels.

I really enjoyed this book. I have read many of Tomie de Paola's books and bought a few of them especially the ones with religious themes. They are simple but with a great story and message. I started this book with even knowing it was based on a real saint St Pascual Baylon and liked it very much.

Our church in Poolesville, MD decided to have a few sessions on the nature of Islam. We were inspired by a talk given to us by Bishop Chane of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, who has traveled in the Middle East and met and spoken with representatives of many faiths and persuasions. He emphasized that Christians, Jews, and Muslims are all descendants of Abraham. We share many more beliefs than we might imagine. Both Jews and Christians and Muslims share the Old Testament. In fact, as Bishop Chane told us, the Koran has more references to the Virgin Mary in the New Testament than the Gospels.So I ordered the Qur'an = Koran to find out for myself. I was charmed by the passages declaring God's mercy, and to see all the references to Moses, Jesus, and many others in the Bible. This version of the Koran, translated into English by Alan Jones, was recommended to me by a distinguished professor of Islamic Studies at a major Ivy League university. Jones is a noted scholar of Arabic studies. His new translation is based upon years of study of the Koran. It has a wonderful introduction, telling much about the prophet Muhammad and the foundation of Islam.Before denouncing Muslims as terrorists we must understand that all three faiths--Christian, Jewish, and Islam have bred individuals who have invoked their religion to oppress and even kill people. They are not supported in any way by any scripture whatsoever. Reading this latest translation has not only given me hope. It has also brought me to the realization that we can all live in peace if we will just try to understand. Read the Koran. Together we survive; divided we fail.

This translation/interpretation joins the ranks of the very best that attempts to capture some of the meaning of the Koran; it contains none of the Arabic text of the Koran. I would read this translation/interpretation in conjunction with M. A. S. Abdel Haleem's, Arberry's, Asad's, Pickthall's, and Cleary's translative/interpretative efforts. I look forward to Jones's synoptic commentary of the Koran as based on classical literary sources in a pending volume.

I enjoyed the writing in this book and enjoyed hearing the story of a young tribal prince's descent into captivity and his ascent to freedom, as well as what he did with his freedom. I purchased the book for middle schoolers, but felt the writing is better geared toward 3-4 graders.The history was not "whitewashed," but the horrors of the middle passage and difficulties of life were handled subtly for sensitive children. Perhaps without further study, a student might conclude that life as a slave wasn't so bad, but with additional discussion about the realities of slave trade, it will be an excellent resource. The book mentioned once that he was beaten with a whip, and mentions a few times the scars left, but because of the story's emphasis is on his willfull path toward freedom, the book has an overall positive feel and outcome. It's focus is not the illumination of terrors, but the perseverance of the human soul to long for freedom.It's a great book to read focusing on empowerment, discipline, and hard work in the worst of situations. I would not use it to drive the point home about slave trade.I also liked that several legal documents are inset within the story, as they made for very good reading challenges.

I did not read this book yet. The review is based on my 10 year old son's experience. He said that the beginning is slow and not "so interesting," but by the middle of the book he was hooked. He really enjoyed this book so much that he wanted to tell me all of the details. My son is high-functioning autistic and has a really difficult time getting interested in any book that doesn't involve Minecraft or Legos. With that said, he read this book in 4 days!!!! That alone is a reason to make a 5 star review.

I used Amos Fortune with my seventh and eighth grade literature classes. This was my first year using this book and I was concerned that it would not capture the modern teenage imagination. I was so pleased by their reactions. They loved the book, and I loved introducing them to well-written literature. I love the character qualities presented in this book. I will be teaching this one for years to come.

A compelling story about a freed slave who made his way north. It was the first Newbery Medal winner I encountered at age 10 when my fourth grade teacher read it aloud to our class. It's still a must read for elementary school students. Gripping, and informative about slavery in America, it began my personal journey, still going on today, to learn about and help to eradicate racism.

Nice edition of one of the most wonderful true stories I've ever read. It is an easy read, but very impacting. Highly recommended!

I liked this book because it wasn't just a boring story but a story of how a free negro man was captured, sold, got freedom, lived, and died. It was an incredible, miraculous story of how a negro named Amos was set free from slavery by his master. Amos didn't just hog his freedom, but used his freedom to help others get freedom.

As other reviewers have said, the kindle version of this book is a disaster. There is no table of contents, index, etc. for organization. Don't waste your time.

I was so impressed with a newspaper feature on Ralph Keyes's The Quote Verifier that I ordered the book right away. I was not disappointed. There are few books I have ever encountered that are more thoroughly researched -- and so entertaining. The book is either a conversation starter (or spoiler, depending on your audience). Keyes delights in debunking commonly held assumptions about famous quotes, but there's no malice. Just meticulous and entertaining research. He points out the evolution of quotations (often much like the children's game of Telephone). I love how this wonderful reference is organized: alphabetically according to key words, interspersed with special sections on those who are frequently quoted, and a "verdict" at the end of each entry to help the reader reach a decision on a quote's origin or evolution). Thus, a special section on Yogi Berra tracks down a bunch of alleged "Yogi-isms." You might be surprised. I was. Gems abound a nearly every page. And the research is cited in a way that makes it fun to learn the origin of a phrase (or the lack of such knowledge). An example is the famous phrase "Iron Curtain." It is commonly known that Winston Churchill used that phrase in a 1946 sppech about Soviet influence. But Keyes exhaustively points out a whole bunch of similar uses that occurred much earlier. Then he gives a verdict: "Many authors, one key publicist -- Winston Churchill." I loved reading the blurb on the phrase "fifteen minutes of fame" (is it Andy Warhol's? Hey, I don't want to give away the juicy tidbits) and on the phrase "May you live in interesting times" (is it really of Chineses origin?). And so many others. Keyes's book has delighted me so much I recently found it a worthy companion on a long trip. I recommend this book to teachers and professors (even just to educate students in acquiring a healthy skepticism), news reporters and editors, talk show hosts, and anyone interested in history or good conversation. It should be on every library shelf, both public and private.

Hard to locate what you are looking to find

I love quotes and I never really trust the source. Well, this book exhaustively evaluates who said what. Sometimes the conclusion is almost as unbelievable as the source of the quote.I like the book very much! There are too many quotes where they cannot definitively conlude who the original author is. They leave it to a kind of "Unresolved" state. I'd almost wish they would attribute it to the most likely source and not to two or three as they sometimes do.The explanations could have been written more clearly.

This book sorts out familiar quotes, and tracks down who really said those words. Helps you from looking foolish so you don't misquote some guy during your speech to the Kiwanis club. Like a dictionary, it is seldom used every day - but when you need it, it's there.

This is not the type of book to read straight through, but rather to pick up from time to time and learn the brief history of the most famous quotations in English history. Most often, the myth does not match the fact. But, the history is never dull and Keyes' words explaining how the quote gained popular notice are often fascinating.

The book itself, as other reviewers have indicated, seems to be outstanding. But the Kindle edition is a disaster. If one wants to look up a quote, keyword and author indexes are vital to finding anything. They are disabled on the Kindle -- nice lists of keywords and names, but no links, no page numbers, no other way to get to the entries. I am taking a class in museum studies for school and this is the earlier edition of the textbook we are using (I bought the older edition to save money). It is a little less than an inch thick and has lots of good essays in it. The newer edition has some additional essays in it that this one does not.

I need this book for a graduate course, and it's much more readable and interesting than a lot of the other material I'm reading. Insightful, with short chapters that are accessible and interesting.

A lot of people are going to draw comparisons between The Underground Economist and the inexplicably popular Freakonomics particularly since the author of Freakonomics is used as the leading quote on the cover. The fact of the matter is that Freakonomics had very little to do with traditional economics per se while Underground is pretty much an economics books with some coolness added to keep it entertaining. The first chapter is essentially a primer on supply and demand.Tim Harford is an economist from England who pushes a free-trade, pro-globalization agenda. In fact two of the five authors with quotes on the back cover have pro-globalization books in their `Author of' section. The second to the last chapter is a hard sell of globalization and the final chapter is a portrait of the happy results of globalization in China. Harford also comes down on taxes saying they are inefficient and destroy competitiveness. Instead of a progressive income tax he argues in support of a flat sales tax. It all sounds like a sale of conservative economics which isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as it's done with honesty and clear thinking (many conservative economists have such an ideological bias that they become useless).The author spends a chapter on healthcare in the United States and demonstrates how flawed it is. The system is hugely expensive, highly bureaucratic, extremely patchy and unpopular to most American's. Harford writes, "United States government alone spends more than the combination of public and private expenditure in Britain, despite the fact that the British government provides free health care to all residents" In fact no country spends more as a percentage of the GDP as American's. Not even close. And as a final kick in the teeth American's aren't even particularly healthy when compared to the rest of the developed nations. However, rather than look to his own country's model for health care or Germany's or Canada's Mr. Harford looks to Singapore. It seems as if the author has mind melded with the Bush administration in believing that American's are over insured and need to look into Health Savings Accounts which to the best of my knowledge don't address ANY of the problems the author recounted. The book contains some real insight on why health insurance is often incompatible with a market based economy but the idea that we should just scrap it in favor of only catastrophic health insurance seems to deny that anyone could possibly be nickeled and dimed into poverty.The author also has some interesting views on handling pollution. The idea is that companies can buy the right to pollute using vouchers. Initially it seems to be a horrible idea but the thinking is that since businesses regularly inflate the cost of keeping clean we ask them to put their money where there mouth is. If the vouchers cost enough businesses will try to find cheap ways to stay under the emissions threshold rather than pay the voucher cost and the problem is solved in a very market based manner. On the other hand the author tends to discount environmentalism as a small cost (2 percent of manufacturing) and of little real concern to businesses. If this is true than why do business interests in the United States spend millions on think tanks and lobbying if it's no big deal? Global Warming is a huge deal and business seems willing to do just about anything to suppress legislation.Besides globalization the author doesn't seem to really be an ideologue. He is clearly a fan of market based economies but admits that participants often don't act sensibly. He's no cheerleader for the stock market by pointing out that price to earning ratios of companies are still vastly inflated and gives a great explanation on why internet companies lack any scarcity power making their ridiculous stock values in the late 90's look like nothing more than a fools dream. The Underground Economist is a very good book. Unlike Freakonomics it is legitimately an economics book and most assuredly has an agenda. Not that that's a bad thing.

I remember one lesson from this book, which I read 10 years ago, that a coffee shop will often pay $1.00, $1.10 and $1.20 for three sizes or qualities of coffee, but will charge the consumer $2.00, $3.00, and $4.00 respectively. The customer then dictates the level of luxury (and profit) they desire, without the business having to do so. Even though I could figure as much, they put it in a way that changed my life and business approach, and they provided an example I often share. I would give this book five stars if I remembered another example!

Summary and review of The Undercover Economist by Tim Harford (Kindle edition)I bought this book as a layman trying to understand how economists think. The first few chapters were interesting, as the author attempts to explain basic notions such as â€œthe world of truthâ€, marginal value, free trade, game theory, and more. The explanations were clear and the writing quite engaging. Things fall off in the final chapters, revealing some of the bigger problems with economic thought, or at least with this economistâ€™s thinking. Specifically, chapter 8 attempts to discuss why poor countries are poor. Clearly the author is trying to show us that the reason is the lack of free markets and correct incentives. But that begs the question: Why are some countries able to get this right and others not? The author fails to provide an answer because he ignores an important factor: culture. Chapter 9 is even worse, as the author discusses the grand benefits of globalization. Sure, there are benefits, but he ignores the disadvantages and also the fact that these benefits are not spread evenly throughout society, at all - some sectors are getting killed. The author writes like someone who is so busy drinking Belgium draught beer in a pub in London and flitting about the world in pursuit of new sights and sounds, that he cannot hear nor see the suffering that is being caused to others ("sweatshops are great compared to the alternative", as he puts it). Perhaps such attitudes are why economists are considered to be soullessâ€¦ The final chapter sets up China as a shining example of the successes of globalization. The really funny thing here is that the author completely ignores the fact that Chinaâ€™s success is built on a consistent policy of protectionism through subsidies, tariffs, and currency manipulation â€“ the exact same things that the author spends the entire book condemning! So apparently, protectionism is great when it helps China but awful for everyone else?? I donâ€™t know how else Iâ€™m supposed to understand this chapter.Bottom line: This is an inconsistent book by an economist who seems to be madly in love with himself. Iâ€™m sure there are better books to serve as an introduction to economics.

My 17 year old grandson told me of this book. He liked it and I read it to talk with him about it. I found it very delightful from the first page and have been discussing the issues the author raises with my mid 50 year old children. Can't recommend it enough. The author provokes thinking about our economic life and how it creates our world. It is easily read and understood.

Dr Haber has it right. He quotes scripture in the Book of Isaiah foretelling the new world when a child will lie down with the animals. I figure if Jesus is returning on a white horse, surely there are other animals in Heaven too!And that comforts me, for Iâ€™ve lost many a pet - and a son at 20 years old, so I understand on a personal level the impact of losing a pet versus a person.Hereâ€™s the deal - no life is replaceable, pet or person. And grieve we shall. Dr. Haber guides us through the grieving process, allowing us to grieve the loss of our pets with grace and dignity. What more could we ask for?

Dr Haber really nailed it here! This book should be required reading for anyone with a pet, or anyone that knows someone with a pet! So many wonderful ideas and thoughts to help children understand and grieve on their level. Amazing read, I highly recommend it.

It is a good read for someone like me to prepare me in the future. But I donâ€™t want to even think about my own dog's passing away for now. Just thinking about it me makes me sad.

This edition is almost certainly an older English translation of CAPITAL (translators Moore and Aveling) and NOT the more recent, superior translation by Ben Fowkes, published by Penguin Books. Evidently Amazon doesn't now offer that newer translation for sale, except in the Kindle edition. (You'll notice that nowhere on the copyright page of this edition does it even mention the translators.) The old, Moore and Aveling translation is good as far as it goes, but it is almost certainly in the public domain now. The fly by night publisher of the $9.00 paperback here offered for sale must be raking in the profits, since it has 'acquired' the rights for this edition of CAPITAL for nothing! (If you read the fine print at the bottom of the publisher's blurb by scrolling down to the bottom of the blurb you'll notice that it warns you that the blurb refers to an "alternate" paperback edition of the book, NOT the Penguin edition that IS for sale as a Kindle book. If I were you, I'd consider buying the Kindle book (the price isn't too bad) but WAIT for Amazon the get access again to the Penguin, Ben Fowkes translation in order to buy a bound copy..

If you invest the substantialamount of time and prodigious effort needed to master it, you will definitely come to understand why Marxists become Marxists, and you may very well become one yourself. At the very least, you'll see the world differently, and you'll have a firmer grasp on the character of our contemporary world, not just its economic make-up, but in a socially expansive way. It's hard to imagine anyone reading the book carefully and with a modicum of understanding and coming away with the judgment that this is merely an ideologically motivated, long-winded exercise in willful self-deception and the deception of others. If you encounter someone who characterized Marx as a willfully wrong-headed ideologue, you may safely assume that you're dealing with someone who has not read Capital.Capital Volume 1 is, in fact, a richly informative and very difficult piece of world-class research. I imagine that most readers who take its full measure will come back to it again and again. I can't imagine doing justice to Capital Volume 1 without putting forth the kind of effort that makes for the creation of a life-long connection. Marx himself claims to have sacrificed his health, happiness, and family to writing the book. This has the pathetic sound of self-pitying exaggeration. But given what I know of Marx and the necessarily prodigious demands of the kind of work he produced, I'm sure he's being dispassionately truthful.You may be disappointed to find that Capital is much less polemical than it is rigorously analytical. That was my first response. For the long term, however, I realized the book is a keeper, and I acknowledged that I'd have to look elsewhere for a call-to-arms that is not also embedded in massive learning. It's true, of course that Marx was an active professional revolutionary, but he was also a world-class scholar with a prodigiously cultivated mind. Reading Marx makes me want to spend a year or two in the library of the British Museum, where Marx did his best scholarship.Marx and Charles Darwin exchanged fairly frequent correspondence. Everyone knows that Darwin transformed our understanding of the world and our place in it. Much the same is true of Marx's contribution to human knowledge. It's interesting to acknowledge that social and religious conservatism were barriers to the rightful dissemination of both. That Marx maintained an ongoing relationship with others of undeniable genius, such as Darwin, bespeaks Marx's own intellectual prowess and reflects his status as a wonderfully original thinker. In his own authentic way, Marx was at least as much a brilliant scientist as Darwin. Darwin changed the way we thought about ourselves, but Marx changed the way we live.

It is hard to write a small review. I can't put 100 pages of notes on this book. It is a book to help anyone understand how capital works. Volume two is more about the circulation process. Please read it and don't quit after chapter 3. It is a long book and it is somewhat complicated. I mean, it's laid out like someone just copy and pasted the text, printed and bound it as cheaply as possible. There is no copy right information or publisher listed anywhere, no table of contents, and it's overall just awkwardly laid out. The cherry on top is that I didn't even receive the complete book, it just abruptly stops mid sentence and the last few sections are missing completely. Absolute garbage, please don't buy this version. Amazon needs to have a little bit of quality control with the products they sling because this isn't even a legitimate publication.

Great read. So glad for the historical information. We are still telling the story of those who survived and the truth is still making it's way to the surface. This maybe fiction but it is the reality of a people who struggled, died and had the courage to fight.

This turned out to be a romance novel of a sort. The couple were happy in the end. The story was suspenseful. I enjoyed this read.

This book was a very quick read and I love how they incorporated Harriet Gunman! Wish it was another book to this.

While the story gives one a glimpse of the horrors of slavery and its unholy treatment of people, along with a rare, almost unrealistic and beautiful ending, I enjoyed the book. This author seems to have a special insight into the emotional and spiritual side of the characters that I found authentic. The characters are well developed. The book is well written. I felt like I was there with the characters involved in their lives as part of the story.

I liked the way the writer kept me on the edge of my seat. The only thing missing was revenge on the Mazda who deserves to suffer just as he made others suffer. His cruelty and dominance over black people was horrible. I wish the half black, half white man had lived. I would love to read a book centered around him. Revenge is Mine faith the Lord.
