Though I wish this would have been longer, you can't help but attempt to read this book cover to cover in one sitting.O'Neill manages to blend the stories and the landscape of middle earth almost effortlessly with the psychological understandings of Carl Jung. The result is a richly rewarding read that any one with an interest in furthering their Lord of the Rings knowledge should dive into.Even if your understanding of Jung isn't that in depth, O'Neill goes out of his way to give a brief summary of some of the fundamentals in an attempt to make a few terms and ideas smoother for the beginning reader. At the same token, though this book does make a very convincing case for Jung's ideas in the lord of the rings mythology,no where does O'Neill claim this was the intention of Tolkien when he began writing out the chronicles of middle earth. This book simply shows how easy they both blend together. If you are a fan of lord of the rings and want to further your knowledge and wish to place a meaning behind the works of Tolkien, this book will only add weight and depth to your enthusiasm for your love of middle earth. If you are a follower of Jung's psychology than this book will give an amazing example of how to place Jungian idea's within the context of myth in a simular fashion to the amazing works of Joseph Campbell. If you are familiar with both, well than a book like this is the best of both worlds.

Yes. A very interesting read. Well written and accessible even to those untrained in Jungian philosophy.

This was one of the first books to deal with Tolkien by way of Carl Jung, and it remains one of the best. The author makes no over-reaching claims, but merely demonstrates how Tolkien's deeply personal mythology of Middle-Earth parallels the concepts of archetypes & the Collective Unconscious posited by Jung. In fact, if you've seen images from Jung's fabled "Red Book" then you'll see how similar his tree imagery is to that of Tolkien's own illustrations of Middle-Earth -- almost as if both are drawn from a shared archetypal image of Tree. The major archetypes are invoked here: Anima, Shadow, Self. In every case, the author never tries to force Tolkien's work into a pre-determined, Procrustean pigeonhole -- but he does make clear how well the Jungian model works as a means of better understanding the power of Tolkien's creation. It's this genuine mythic power that separates Tolkien from all his imitators, as he possessed not only a rich intellectual knowledge of myth, but a visceral, even spiritual knowledge of it. Middle-Earth is the full & flowering expression of an individual human being, not a flimsy & formulaic construct that mimics the surface without ever touching the substance.Whether your interest is primarily in Tolkien or Jung, this is an excellent introduction to the wisdom of their lifelong work. If I have any complaint, it's only that I wish it were longer -- but perhaps it's better this way, in that it leaves you wanting more & encourages you to seek it out on your own. Highly recommended!

A wonderful book for anyone with a taste for any combination of Tolkien, Jung and a bit of military history, which is where the author comes from. I will remember forever, "Smaug is what we in Othellos's trade would call an area weapon." I bought a first edition on a remainder table in a bookstore in St. Petersburg (Florida) in 1981 and I treasure it to this day!Informed, intelligent and highly recommended!

I read this book a long time ago - in the early 80s - but still remember and recommend it to anyone interested in personality theorists, such as C.G. Jung. Rather than critique its strengths , weaknessed, accuracies, and inaccuracies, I'll describe its impact on me. Prior to it reading, I'd spent a hour or 2 reading about Jung by way of a undergraduate Psych Class. The summer after I read it, I worked my way independantly through the index to and about a third of the text of Jung's collected works, and all of the popular Jung ("Man & his Symbols", etc) I could find. It drew from love of Middle Earth, introducing me to a larger, equally numinous world.

Study of the correlation between Carl Jung's theory of the collective unconscious and J.R.R. Tolkien's mythology for Middle-earth. The author was Professor of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the United States Military Academy

I am currently reading this, borrowed from the library, and looking to buy a copy for myself (that's why I'm at this site). This is a remarkably intelligent book, yet written in a light and friendly way. Can't urge you enough to read it, but if you don't you're missing out!A full review to follow soon . . .

This is a wonderfully written book, by an exceptional writer, about a truly great man.Frank Boyden was the Headmaster of Deerfield Academy, located in the Pocumtuck Valley in Western Massachusetts, from 1902 until 1968. During that time he transformed a school on the brink of closing to what was by 1968 one of America's very best secondary schools. In the process he nurtured and developed some of the world's best citizens. To Deerfield's credit it has built upon, rather that rested upon, the foundation which Frank Boyden laid. But today's Deerfield could never have existed had it not been for Frank Boyden's miracle. What he achieved is to my knowledge unique. No one before or since has created so much from so little in such a period of time.If you had ever met Frank Boyden you would have been unimpressed. He was a small man who did not appear or sound remarkable; and he was clearly not at all impressed with himself. That appearance, however, was totally misleading. Somehow, behind that unassuming character, Frank Boyden worked magic. In "The Headmaster", a book both funny and inspirational, McPhee insightfully lays out in just over 100 pages, the captivating story of how Boyden achieved this incredible transformation in Deerfield. But it also reveals how Frank Boyden impacted not just Deerfield, but also achieved much more. If you care about education; about young people; about how we relate with one another; about the type of society we have, you will both enjoy this book and enjoy meeting Frank Boyden, and you will be inspired by both. What you learn by reading this book will stay with you, and keep you thinking, long after you finish the last page. If our country is great it is because we have been the beneficiaries of the talents, ideals and dedication of people like "The Headmaster". He has made an impact on this country and on our world that continues to this day. Both are better places because of what Frank Boyden achieved in the Pocumtuck Valley.

I loved this book. It was about a simple but brilliant headmaster and was written by a man who may call himself simple, but who is brilliant as well. Both, in my opinion, are sweet, self-fulfilled men and we should count outselves lucky to read about them. Not that this book is about John McPhee, because it isn't inasmuch as he wrote it about Frank Boyden. But we get to know John McPhee in the writing and that's one thing that makes this book so special.I feel like I am going to gush on and on here, so I will just say thank you to John McPhee for reminding us what school USED to be like, which was an all-incompassing and mostly loving learning experience if one happened to go to Deerfield School during the time of Headmaster Boyden. I loved every sentence of this book, most of which made me smile or brought a shock of recognition along with a tear or two. I would like to see this book fleshed out to become a full-fledged biography, especially now that I have read that John McPhee spent a year at Deerfield back when.....

While reading John McPhee's "The Headmaster", I was reminded of business writer Jim Collins' book "Good to Great" In his book, Collins identifies what he calls Level Five leaders. They are the rare leaders who are able to bring organizations to their highest levels of performance. These great leaders "blend extreme personal humility with intense professional will". If there ever was a poster child for Jim Collin's Level Five leader it has to be Frank Boyden.Charter Schools are a relatively new phenomonon sweeping across the United States. Many new schools are being opened and there are great opportunities for young leaders to mold these institutions. "The Headmaster" is an inspiring portrait of what one strong willed person can do. This book should be a must read for young charter school leaders.

Sure, this may be more of a panegyric more than a biography, but it's inspiring. As someone who has spent years in private schools, it's great to read about a headmaster who really shaped a school -- Boyden defines headmastership: he was head of Deerfield for 64 years! Even more impressive than Mr. Boyden was his wife whom he called the smartest person on the campus. Proves the theory that behind every great man is a great woman. I hope we restructure our school administrations so that we allow for heads like this again -- too much time is spent these days on fundraising and not enough on school. Though Boyden was not an intellectual, he inspired and trained generations of boys and never lost his personal touch.

Review

"This is a dark and amazing tale, an essential reminder . . . Devastating . . . Shocking . . . Nixon and Kissinger spent the decades after leaving office burnishing their images as great statesmen. This book goes a long way in showing just how undeserved those reputations are."—Dexter Filkins, The New York Times Book Review  "[A] gripping and well-researched book . . . Sheds fresh light on a shameful moment in American foreign policy . . . Admirable clarity."—The Economist"A profoundly disturbing account of the hitherto hidden role of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger in the slaughter of hundreds of thousands . . . Bass has defeated the attempted coverup through laborious culling of relevant sections of the Nixon White House tapes, declassified State Department documents and interviews with former officials, American and Indian, who were involved . . . After reading Bass's account of this shameful episode, one has to . . . conclude that where the Bengalis were concerned, Kissinger and Nixon simply did not give a damn."—Neil Sheehan, The Washington Post"Bass takes us inside the Oval Office to reveal the scandalous role America played in the 1971 slaughter in what is now Bangladesh. Largely unknown here, the story combines the human tragedy of Darfur, the superpower geopolitics of the Cuban missile crisis and the illegal shenanigans of Iran-contra . . . [A] harrowing tale." —Peter Baker, The New York Times, Favorite Book of the Year"Devastating . . . Excellent . . . Bass, a historian at Princeton, has written an account—learned, riveting, and eviscerating—of the delusions and the deceptions of Nixon and Kissinger. Steeped in the forensic skills of a professional academic historian, he also possesses the imaginative energies of a classical moralist, and he tells the story of the choices and the decisions that led to the slaughter in Bengal . . . appropriately as a moral saga . . . Indispensable." —Sunil Khilnani, The New Republic"A riveting read with direct relevance to many of the most acute foreign-policy debates of today."—Gideon Rachman, Financial Times"Absorbing . . . Bass draws up a severe indictment of Nixon and Kissinger."—Pankaj Mishra, The New Yorker"The best book I read this year was Gary Bass's The Blood Telegram, which showed through superb reporting and excellent analysis that Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger gleefully abetted the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of innocent Bengalis . . . Excellent."—Isaac Chotiner, The New Republic, Best Books of the Year"Thankfully, Princeton University professor Gary Bass has provided us with a helpful reminder of Nixon's true character. In The Blood Telegram, Bass expertly recounts the stunning indifference of Nixon and . . . Henry Kissinger  to the reports from US diplomats of Pakistani genocide . . . Vivid, often disquieting detail from Oval Office tapes unearthed by Bass . . . His talents as a scholar, writer, and foreign-policy analyst are on full display in this brilliant work of narrative history. I did not remember much about the 1971 attack by Pakistan on its eastern region (now known as Bengla Desh). It is a terrible story. The basics are that following a national election in which a Bengali from East Pakistan won, the central government dissolved parliament and attacked East Pakistan. It was not a war because the Bengalis were almost all unarmed civilians. It was a slaughter, of millions. The Blood Telegram tells how President Nixon and, even more, Henry Kissinger, gave the Pakistan government a green light to go in and massacre, but refused during the course of the slaughter to indicate, in any way, that the U.S. had a problem with killing innocent people using U.S. supplied arms.In short, the U.S. aided and abetted what amounted to genocide. It is a terrible story but uplifting too because of the resistance of State Department officials, led by the US Consul in East Pakistan (a heroic figure named Blood, of all things!) and the US Ambassador to India, Kenneth Keating. These two, and others, flatout told Nixon and Kissinger that they were supporting genocide, using that word.Neither cared. Both viscerally hated India (too democratic and racially offensive to them PLUS neutral vis a vis the US and USSR) and loved Pakistan (not democratic at all, with the military pretty much running everything). On top of that Pakistan was close to China and Nixon wanted to go to China so....a few million people dead was not a high price to pay.Great book. Every page is a revelation. And the best news: Kissinger is alive to see how history will remember him: as someone utterly indifferent to the slaughter of innocents in East Asia along with his crimes in Vietnam, Chile, etc etc.

This isn't only a tale of genocide or of the civil war that created Bangladesh from what had been East Pakistan but also of how deliberate actions and inaction on the part of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger facilitated the mass slaughter of Bengalis and the forced relocation of millions while the United States destroyed any chance of long term influence in South Asia. The narrative centers on Archer Blood, the last U.S. consul general in Dhaka when it was still the capital of East Pakistan, and the cable he sent through the official State Department “dissent channel”, a telegram that described the actions of the Pakistani army as genocide against the Bengali people including targeting intellectuals, political leaders and students. Official Washington was able to ignore Blood’s message simply by declaring that a bloodbath carried out by an American ally using arms supplied from this country and with tacit encouragement by the Richard Nixon himself was an internal matter to be dealt with by Pakistan. The diplomats on the scene (28 State Department officers signed the telegram in addition to Archer Blood) reported that the systematic destruction of Bengali society fit the terms of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide all too well. Unfortunately for those in East Pakistan, Henry Kissinger was cultivating the military ruler of Pakistan, General Yahya Khan as a conduit to the rulers of the People’s Republic of China so Khan’s forces were given a free pass to do their worst—and they did. The United States had significant leverage with Khan and could have forced him to put an end to the atrocities committed by his army using U.S. weapons but chose to wash their hands of it.Gary J. Bass has a definite point of view; not to put too fine a point on things he has real contempt for both Nixon and Kissinger. But it is hard to fault his approach—he knows the sources cold and makes excellent use of recently declassified documents, unused White House tapes and hours of interviews with U.S. officials in who had served in Dhaka and Washington as well as Indian Army officers. A former reporter for “The Economist”, now an academic historian, Bass knows how to frame a story that has been too little known in this country.

The Blood Telegram is the kind of superbly researched and written history that appears once in a decade. It is based on massive archival research and on Nixon's White House tapes, as well as interviews with a large cast of persons directly involved. The author documents the flow of events faithfully and accurately. HIs special focus is on Nixon and Kissinger, the American leaders who shaped and guided the United States' response to the unfolding political, humanitarian and finally military crisis in East Pakistan during 1971.How could the United States enable a genocide and an unprecedented humanitarian crisis? Why did Nixon and Kissinger disregard and punish U.S. Foreign Service Officers who reported the facts about the Pakistan army's slaughter of Bengali academics, university students and ultimately hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children? Why did Nixon like and admire the Pakistani military dictator, Yahya Khan, and despise Indira Gandhi, the elected leader of the world's largest democracy? Why did Nixon and Kissinger, however briefly, exercise brinkmanship that could have led to a major US-Soviet confrontation, even a wider war?I believe the answers to these questions reside in Nixon and Kissinger as leaders who responded almost entirely in terms of the geopolitical paradigm of the Cold War. Throughout, Nixon saw Pakistan as an ally that could not be undercut, or even influenced, for such steps would show weakness in the hoped-for opening to China, and confer advantage to the Soviet Union. The genocide was categorized as an 'internal affair' of Pakistan--even though there had been ample opportunity to use U.S. pressure to alleviate and possibly even prevent it.I personally experienced the events of the Blood Telegram as a member of the U.S. Agency for International Development mission, stationed at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi 1970-1972. As the crisis grew, I read the classified cable message traffic every morning, closely read all available U.S. and Indian press coverage, and discussed the situation with Embassy and USAID colleagues, many of whom were managing refugee relief programs. From that experience, I can add to the book's narrative about the U.S. Consulate General's reporting from Dacca, East Pakistan's capital. After Archer Blood was fired at Nixon's direction, his successor as Consul General was Herbert Spivack, expected to be a 'team player' in downplaying the extent of the on-going Pak army crackdown. Spivack came through New Delhi on his way to Dacca, to be briefed on how the rising tide of refugees was impacting eastern India and on U.S. food assistance to the camps. It was clear from his comments to the Delhi Americans that he understood his intended role. But, to his great credit as a Foreign Service professional, Herb Spivack's reporting from Dacca shortly after his arrival became substantively the same as that of Arch Blood's. But Kissinger couldn't very well fire him too!As seems apparent from his contemptuous and hateful comments ("What India needs is a good famine") recorded from the Oval Office, Nixon had no conception of India as a sovereign nation responding to a unique set of regional circumstances. Throughout, India's role was seen only as an extension of the Cold War chess game, as if India were merely a pawn of the Soviets. Nixon and Kissinger's cynical dismissal of the plight of the refugees--a human tide of ten million people that would have overwhelmed the capacity of even a rich nation to feed and care for--was simply sickening to 'hear' from the mouths of supposedly decent men.In fact, the emergence of Bangladesh had deep roots in regional history that had nothing to do with the Cold War. The salient aspects were the 1947 partition of British India, and the critical role played by east Bengal's mainly Muslim population in securing the very existence of Pakistan; the effort by the western part to suppress the Bengali language (spoken by a majority of the citizens of the country) in favor of Urdu; the decades-long transfer of resources from the east to finance the industrialization of the western province; and finally, the racial and religious prejudice of the western province's Punjabis and Pathans against 'the Bingos.' (Earnest prayers were offered in Karachi mosques that the Bengalis should become good Muslims!).Autonomy for East Pakistan within a federal framework, or even independence as Bangladesh, could hardly change the power calculus of the Cold War. And from their recorded comments, it appears that both Nixon and Kissinger, on some level, understood this. The real U.S. interest was in West Pakistan, holder of the nation's key asset--control of the Khyber Pass and access to Afghanistan. But this did not stop Kissinger from pulling his last petulant prank--sending the U.S.S. Enterprise, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, into the Bay of Bengal to threaten and harrass the Indians into a premature cease-fire. This move accomplished nothing except to poison U.S.-India relations for a decade.

Review

“GPS guides our world. Here at last is the amazing and well-told story of where it came from, how it works, and where it―and we―are going.” - Richard Rhodes, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb“In Pinpoint, Greg Milner gives us a much-needed account of GPS, its history, philosophy, and the overwhelming consequences of its success. Funny, scary, and tremendously readable, Pinpoint will be an eye-opening thrill for anyone who has watched their blue dot dance around an online map.” - Andrew Blum, author of Tubes“Whenever people theorize about the collision of technology and culture, the Internet tends to consume all the oxygen in the room. But there is another global system that's taking over our lives in an even more insidious fashion, with stranger implications for the future of humanity. Pinpoint dissects the modern age of mapping and shows the hidden dangers of a world where nothing is hidden at all.” - Chuck Klosterman“Seldom have I learned so much so effortlessly. . . . Every page was a treasure-house of fascinations: my temptation after finishing was to begin the book all over again, there being so much to absorb, all of it crucially important to understanding our world's dependence on one of modern civilization's new-made fundamentals.” - Simon Winchester“Informative... Pinpoint excels when it makes clear that GPS is an engineering marvel, a global utility and a source of new threat all at once.” - Clay Shirky, New York Times Book Review“Remarkably engaging… [T]he best business book about technology this year.” - James Surowiecki, Strategy+Business“Milner is a brisk and funny guide.” - Konstantin Kakaes, Wall Street Journal“No technology has transformed the human landscape so completely, yet been taken for granted so quickly, as GPS. The reason that brains are so good at storing maps is because the brain is a map, and our collective internal map is now migrating somewhere else. Greg Milner’s Pinpoint is a fascinating chronicle of how this happened and why―captured before the details had a chance to escape.” - George Dyson“An informative yarn.” - James Anthony, Evening Standard“[A] joy to read… It will be a strong contender for my science book of 2016.” - Clive Cookson, Financial Times

If you are interested in changing times and what appears to be common stuff read this book.Wonderfully written and easily followed. Still it delves deeply into the thing we know as GPS.Starts with far, far back how we and others navigated. Then carries us through the many developments and changes that caused us to arrive where we are. Where we are now is really an interesting part that you shouldn't miss. GPS has spawned all sorts of connected systems - things that we can do because of the original GPS and how we are now far beyond it yet dependent still. An excellent read.

A good description of the development and implementation of GPS by the military. The author curiously neglected uses of GPS by business. UPS gives their drivers the routes they will take each day, including avoiding left turns wherever possible to save time.

The book is not quite what I expected - I was hoping for a book about the various clever applications of GPS - what I got was a detailed analysis of the conflict within the US military and government agencies. Interesting, but less than was possible.

Not everyone will enjoy this book but I found it fascinating and have told many friends about it. Most of them also purchased it and liked it as much as I did. GPS is now a part of everyone's life and it is interesting to see where it started.

This book is a great treatment of the subject of GPS and the history of navigation, military targeting, and scientific terrestrial analysis that motivates positioning technology. The author points to a few dangers as well. I highly recommend this book to all interested in its subject.

The book includes many interesting things about the history of navigation and cartography. But it also includes many pages telling non-relevant "gossip" about the scientists who developed these fields.

I am hooked! Will a latest Tomtom make using it force me to know street names or know where north is? Great story about something that became my guide when i need it most.

I had heard an interview with the author on a radio show (Here and Now) and the book sounded as though it would be interesting. It is, indeed! The history of navigation seemed odd to me at first, but it all came together. He has certainly researched the topic and has interviewed the players in the GPS saga and has done an excellent job of putting it all together. Excellent history of this technology that for years had been on the verge of being killed. This technology that we can't live without today was once too inaccurate to be of value and misunderstood and underappreciated in its potential is now something we take for granted. An excellent history and a terrific description of how it's changing life as we know it today.

I just got back from taking the Subset I portion of the CSET on Reading/English/Social Studies. This book did not prepare me well enough. There are so many questions that I just simply did not know the answer to because it was not covered in this book. For example, Cesar Chavez and I thorough review of the California constitution. It also asked several questions about learning a second language. My written exam was on Islam. This book barely covered Islam. Read this book, but you definitely have to supplement it to get more in depth information. I've ordered additional books for Subset II and III. In addition, when taking their practice tests, some of their answers are wrong. In one instance, it asked which came first during the Civil War and had the "correct" answer that Sherman's March came before the Gettysburg Address. This is not true. This was just one of several examples I came across. I wish I had read some of the other reviews before I took my test. I would have read other books more in depth. So I don't know if I passed. This book will redeem itself a bit if I do, because it did cover some information that I didn't know and helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses in test taking... mostly that I didn't thoroughly read the questions and that I need to make sure I fully understand.

All the typos are just great. Really makes studying for an exam a lot simpler. Yes I'm being sarcastic. Pathetic, don't they use editors?

I took all three sections of the CSET using this book and some Khan Academy and youtube videos. The first two test subsets were great, however the third one which deals with the arts, P.E. and child development was not that great. I bought this book, so I wouldn't have to search out other resources to use for this test and in the third section, it actually tells you to look up the fine art information on wikipedia instead of including it in the book. I have no problem with them giving supplemental information via wikipedia or Khan Academy, but the fact that they didn't include it in the book at all was ridiculous. The book includes quizzes on each subject and practice tests that follow the information for each subtest section. These were all very helpful. I would have liked for their to be a short review after each subsection of each topic (for example, if the earth science section had a few review questions as well as the oceanography sections instead of just having one complete science review at the end). The tests in the book were actually harder than the CSET practice test and the CSETs that I took. All and all, this is a good book to study and I would recommend getting it if you are planning on taking the CSET multiple subject tests.

Passed all three subtests on the first try. I had utilized other resources but wished I had purchased this digital book first. I would have only read this book and called it good. The extra online test they reference is the CTC exam freely available online so unless I misunderstood or overlooked something, I think it is somewhat misleading advertising. Nevertheless, I recommend it over other resources which I know. Supplement this book with the CTC exams online. Focus on Visual Arts and PE unless that is your background otherwise, everything else is a review. Good luck.

Took the Praxis Core and CSET at the same time of year (I was applying for several schools across the US). This book will suffice for studying for BOTH exams except for the CSET's art section. Buying this for a second time now that my husband is going into SPED. Wish him luck!

This review only covers Subtest 1. I was skeptical about this book since a lot of reviews were rating it pretty low. I used this book & this book only to review for the test & I passed. I took this test three times & the first two times i took this test I used the Cliffs Test Prep & was off by 5-10 points. This book covers everything that's on the test. I studied for 3 months & read everything over & over again. I suggest this book & really dedicating your time to studying. I'm not sure why the others rated this book pretty low. I loved it.

I bought the Barron's and the Cliffnotes CSET study guides. The Cliffnotes guide was so much more comprehensive and had so many sample exams and details on how to take the tests. The Barron's was useless, compared to Cliffnotes.

Very excited to study for the tests. So far I am learning things from the book and I am only into subtest one, gearing up for my first test at the end of June.

Great overview for those new to marketing, but fair warning, it was published in 1978, so a lot of the references feel dated (especially related to technology).Still some very applicable ideas for positioning your product or service in the minds of people already overloaded with advertising stimuli. Must read for anyone in a marketing role.

This book is the "father of positioning" Trout's famous work, the first in the history of the United States, the best business classics, the US CEO is most afraid of being read by competitors in the business book, talking about positioning theory and operation methods And with a wealth of practical case analysis, to guide entrepreneurs to successful corporate positioning, to achieve commercial success.Positioning, not only to find a keyword for the product, to compose a slogan, but also to occupy a unique position in the mind of the prospective customer. This book uses a number of corporate cases, illustrating a company name at the beginning, a simple slogan, may be able to lay the foundation for the success of the product and the company. In short, positioning is not simply advertised, and the depth of the doorway is difficult to distinguish and is crucial. Why do you need to locate?First of all, we are in the era of information explosion: the media channels are rich but the information is asymmetrical, the information is inflated, and the information of products and enterprises is easily submerged in the vast amount of information. Secondly, the first cause effect makes the brain more likely to pay attention to the first. The information of contact, the information defense mechanism makes the brain establish an insurmountable barrier in the first information and the non-first information, and the brain with limited information processing capability is trapped in the chaos of mass information manufacturing. Information is cumbersome and human brain limits make positioning so important. How to position it? Industry leaders have an inherent advantage in positioning. The first cause effect allows consumers to see only the leader of the first place. The position that leaders want to occupy the brains of consumers is simple: analyze market and consumer vacancies, fight for time to fill vacancies, and use value advantages and brand advantages to intercept opponents. However, the leader should be wary of: Do not blindly expand, do not casually expand the product. Once the position of goods and brands is formed in the minds of consumers, it is difficult to be changed. If the trade rushes, it is easy to shake the original positioning, so that consumers can confuse the original positioning and new positioning, the original positioning is broken, and the new positioning is not clear. Consumers are likely to switch to other brands. The author suggests that if you want to expand your product, you must establish a new position with a new name, separate from the original product, and attract new customers.Share the classic arguments in the book with you:1. The best way to deal with an over-extended society is to simplify the information as much as possible.2. The main factor in establishing leadership is to get ahead of people's minds.3. The biggest mistake the company makes is trying to satisfy everyone's needs, that is, everyone's satisfaction trap.4. If someone forces you to drink a cup of H2O, your reaction may not be good, but if someone invites you to drink a glass of water, you may feel good. That's right, the difference between the two is not in the mouth, but in the mind.5. If you want to make a new product successful, you should set a new ladder for it. New ladder, new name. It's that simple.6. Complexity is the enemy of positioning, simple is the true meaning of positioning

Positioning is about how to define your product or entity in an optimal way so as to differentiate it from competitors and drive preferential purchase or use. Ries and Trout argue that positioning has become especially critical for marketers as our society has become increasingly overburdened with communication and advertisements.I wish I could go back in time after having read this book -- Positioning gave me numerous epiphanies related to companies I have started or worked for. Positioning is a must-read for anyone who works in marketing or business, especially those launching a new product or struggling to hit stride with an existing product. The book hammers home the point that the only reality that matters with is the perception of your customers. It's the prospect's world-view and interpretation of your product that counts, not yours. And although this book contains outdated examples as it was published over 30 years ago, I didn't feel that this detracted from the core content. Rather, the authors' prophetic and timeless concepts helped reinforce their arguments. Overall, this book helped me move along the path towards critically understanding and evaluating positioning strategies. My primary criticism of this book is that while Ries and Trout provide a highly practical explanation of how and when to use line extensions, I did not feel as well-armed with practical methodologies for positioning in general. Other than semantic differential, no research strategies or exercises were provided for defining the positioning of an entity. I was somewhat able to fill this gap with material I found online published by Roger Straus. In particular I would recommend looking up Straus's "triangular" strategy, which incorporates rational, affective and relational positioning, to be a great supplement to Positioning.
