About the Author

As a child, Kimberly Derting spent hours drawing underground "worm cities" because her art skills didn't allow her to draw arms or legs. In college, she studied biology, but her real experiments are done at home, where she wrangles three kids, one husband, two dogs, two cats, and a rabbit--seriously, she's practically a zookeeper! She's terrified of spiders and snakes, but loves animals (obviously!), so she's spent her free time volunteering for a local animal shelter, with her daughter. Her hypothesis is that she's always right...although she's never actually been able to prove that theory. And even if you don't laugh at her jokes, she knows in her heart that she's hilarious. Shelli R. Johannes never warmed up to creepy crawly bugs, but she always loved zoology and biology. In fact, she can be found on highways and country roads saving strays and jaywalking critters, or volunteering with animal conservation groups like the Atlanta Zoo, the Dolphin Project, and Bosley's Place. Unfortunately she learned  that chemistry (aka cooking) was not her favorite science, resulting in odd reactions and minor explosions. She lives in Atlanta with her husband, two kids, one bird, one fish, and two crazy-haired goldendoodles who, just like Einstein, seem to love fruit and dessert, but loathe veggies.Part author - illustrator - filmmaker, Vashti Harrison is an artist originally from Onley, Virginia. She has a background in filmmaking and a love for storytelling. She earned her BA from the University of Virginia as a double major in Media Studies and Studio Art with concentrations in Film and Cinematography. She also received her MFA in Film and Video from CalArts where she snuck into Animation classes to learn from Disney and Dreamworks legends. There she rekindled a love for drawing and painting. Now, utilizing both skillsets, she is passionate about crafting beautiful stories for children and young adults in the film and kidlit worlds.

I can't love this book more if I tried. So happy to see more kids books coming out that offer mixed race kids and kids of color in general, covering topics of science, and encouraging girls in STEM.Get this book for any kid in your life! It was written extremely well and the artwork is gorgeous. It supports asking questions, finding different solutions, & thinking outside the box.

My second grade daughter's book club read it and really enjoyed it. Some "big words", but great opportunity to talk about concepts that they are studying in science class already.

My daughter has been asking for this book on repeat. She’s six - I think we’ll be reading this book for the next few years. It’s darling and such an important message.

Illustrations were a bit redundant but my 2 year old son loved the story and saying the name Cece over and over again.

Wow! This book is what I was hoping for and more! This is a perfect way to introduce science to students. The illustrations are beautiful.

I read the book to my great granddaughter, she loved it! I hope Cece has more adventures/ books to come!!

This book is a great read! We originally found it at the library, but had to order a copy for family use.

We talk about Cece all the time!

To get the negatives out of the way: it's unfortunate that, having invested in appealing graphic design - the book looks just so much nicer than the spartan O'Reilly titles - Addison Wesley have not provided the author with similarly solid editorial support, resulting in a book that definitely feels rushed. There are typos, cosmetic blemishes (one regular annoyance is a table that's too wide for a page - one could fit it using a smaller font, but instead the table ends up split across twice as many rows), a couple of statistical blunders (on pp. 172 and 263), things that could have been left out, things that should have been included (oddly, the chapter on joins never mentions outer joins, and, in fact, does not explain what a join is) - and, finally, time and again, things that should have been explained better. I do not feel that "R for Everyone" is the best available introduction to R, and continue to endorse Robert Kabacoff's high-quality "R in Action" in that capacity.Where "R for Everyone" differs from "R in Action" - and, coming to the positives, where it wins out - is in intermediate-R territory. One important example is coverage of "ggplot2". Whereas "R in Action" discusses the "old school" R graphics, "R for Everyone" goes with "ggplot2", becoming the second popular book (after Winston Chang's "R Graphics Cookbook") to discuss the package - and although its explanation of "ggplot2" syntax is sketchy, the samples found throughout the book do build into a useful "ggplot2" gallery that actually brought me over the fence. "plyr" package, an important data-manipulation aid, is another example, and another "R in Action" no-show. So is "data.table". So is "knitr", used to produce reports. So is "rcpp", used to interface R and C++. So is R package-building. (You will notice that the topics become more advanced. These are introductions rather than substantial explorations, but awareness is a valuable thing). In the book's second half, when discussion moves from R to statistics-with-R, the author continues to manage to find original material; statistical explanations may be brief - this is not a textbook - but examples, and pointers to useful R utilities, are much appreciated.I own just one R book - literally, "The R Book", by Crawley - but "R for Everyone" will be joining it; this has got to be a compliment. Kudos to Jared Lander for writing an original, substantial, useful book.UPD. It's June 2015, and second edition of Robert Kabacoff's "R in Action" is finally out - but the changes are incremental, and my endorsement of "R for Everyone" stands.

In spite of the good reviews, the reality is very different. This is a bad R book with many shortcomings that range from bad explanations of the basics (functions, data types) to no explanation at all when showing the use of R in data analysis. The book has a nice layout in color, but this is misleading. Long R output without proper formatting for a textbook is always displayed because the author wrote the book directly in the code as he himself states and printed it out as it is. And it feels like. Most of the text looks just like comments in a program code. The treatment of functions is very poor (they are also very rarely used in the book) and the explanation of the different R data types lacks depth and is misguided. Silly examples are used to show the basics as in printing the author's name. The later chapters get even worse, literally damaging all the more interesting parts, where the book leaves the very basics and moves on to data handling and then to advanced data analytics in R.The part of the book that deals with data analytics is sincerely a bit of a tragedy. Rushed text with no clear or sometimes whatsoever explanations of what is actually being done, with just little text and lots of code output and charts taking most of the space. Ironically the book that is "for everyone" makes hard for "everyone" to understand anything that uses statistics, about 60% of the book!.It is harder even for those trained on statistics or related "hard" sciences. For example, In chapter 22, right in the beginning the author uses a value for the predicted number of clusters in the data under analysis. This value is taken out of the blue and only later it is shown how this value can be found using two methods. The first method doesn’t bring any useful value (and you wonder why it is shown). The second method does bring a good value but it is not explained in the text how this method's results should be interpreted to determine this value. Apart from two rushed sentences that speak of a standard deviation being used, whatever this standard deviation is coming from as the author says nothing about the algorithm clusGap that he used for such. I did some research and found out that the author's LiveLesson video course, that follows the book almost page by page, does mention, albeit quickly, how to interpret the second method’s result above. But not in his book… Unfortunately this video course also suffers from the same problems that the book does, as it is mostly a live reading of the book with the author typing the code.In fact, almost anything related to data analytics is very poorly explained, if at all. Another example, out of many, is the section 20.3 on Generalized Adaptive Models. After preprocessing the raw data used for the analysis, a few charts are displayed (without much explanation of the code used for which) and then the data analysis code output is shown without any explanation. Two features of the data, CreditAmount and Age, are displayed in charts where they are smoothed, but there is no explanation about what for. And the analysis stops right there without any further explanation. What could be said in a few sentences is left out. Most of the data analytics examples also show very poor performance, leading the user to think why data analysis is used if it performs so badly and, if it performs well, why the author didn’t select any better example. There are also many pedagogical errors, minor and major ones. I will just mention a few taken from chapter 12 as an example:1) Many variables are created with the function assign in a loop but actually only two of them are used. What for? On top of it, the same loop is coded again later with just a different variable name.2) The function merge is used with the same column names, although the author states that “the ability to specify different column names (..) is the most useful feature of merge” before doing so with the function join from the library plyr. Then you wonder what difference is being shown.3) It gets worse. In a rather convoluted way to show how to merge different data frames, the author introduces two new features of R, eval and parse, just by passing and without any specific examples or further explanation. In this same convoluted example the author also uses the R function Reduce in the most complicated way with the dots, without first showing simple examples and what it is for. Only then later down in the text he goes on to explain what Reduce does but fails to mention that it can only be applied to binary functions. The text states that “Reduce can be a difficult function to grasp”. If it is, it would deserve a better treatment, not as a side note, explained in an example that is related to something else (how to merge data frames). It should also have a full explanation of how it can be used.R is a beautiful language that can be well explained. It is not hard to show its power in data analysis with short but clear explanations. It’s regrettable that this book misses its stated goals so badly, when it could have done otherwise brilliantly, as its author seems capable to do a much better job. So I can't recommend this book. There is actually a shortage of good R books in the market, but "R in Action" (second edition is coming), "The Art of R Programming" and "The R Book" are much superior choices.

I was quite disappointed with this book. I'm not entirely new to R, but I've never gone through any sort of well-rounded text so I thought this would be the best option. wanted a combo of graphics and getting to know commonly used packages. This does offer that BUTmany of the data sets the author references are not available where he references them. And others have very long and silly column names, which makes writing out code needlessly complicated. Worse still is when the column names don't match the book - this book is brand new so the columns should match. When they don't match, it makes a lot of unnecessary busy work matching up the author's terms with the actual data set. D for effort. These mistakes would have been easy to catch and clean up.

Very basic. this is good for those people who are absolutely new to R. but if you are someone who has already done some reading up on R then this is really too basic.I had already done the MOOC for R at courseera and was looking for something which will take me further from that... but this is not the book for that.

I personally looked everywhere to try and find what the postcards would actually look like and found nothing. Decided to take a gamble with this and thought I would share which parks are included and examples what they will look like. Will be using these as table numbers for my wedding, so I hoped I would have 24 different parks to choose from. Voting with 2 stars because there are only 12 and I couldn't find anywhere that was listed after searching multiple sites. Quality and artwork are nice, just wish they had actually mentioned only 12 parks in the listing.

Just what time needed for my craft project.

Beautiful illustrations, good value - these postcards are frame-worthy art.

Bought these for daughter. She loves them.

love these postcards! such wonderful artwork and good quality.

I love these postcards! They are unique, and the illustrations are cute. I've been using these for Postcrossing and sending them to those who like map postcards. Everyone has loved them so far.

Justice Failed: How “Legal Ethics” Kept Me in Prison for 26 Years

Review

Praise for Justice Failed An Official Junior Library Guild Selection, Adult Crossover Nonfiction "Alarming and timely, Justice Failed is a must-read for anyone hoping to better understand the reality of modern American criminal justice." ―New York Journal of Books "A shocking tale of wrongful conviction . . . that brings general conditions into cruelly sharp focus." ―Kirkus Reviews "In simple, unadorned prose, Logan tells his story of the gravely flawed justice system that imprisoned him, an innocent man, for nearly three decades . . . A powerful argument that will appeal to readers of Michael Morton’s Getting Life: An Innocent Man’s 25-Year Journey from Prison to Peace." ―Library Journal "The story of the wrongful conviction of Alton Logan in Chicago stands out as perhaps one of the most unusual and cruel stories in the history of American jurisprudence. Convicted of a 1982 murder and sentenced to life in prison, Logan was not only innocent, but lawyers for the real killer knew it all along and, citing legal ethics, kept it a secret for more than a quarter of a century before revealing the evidence that set Logan free." ―Maurice Possley, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and New York Times best-selling author of The Brown’s Chicken Massacre and Everybody Pays "This remarkable first-person story, told by an innocent man who lost twenty-six years of his life for a crime he did not commit, not only presents the dilemma that criminal defense attorneys face when their client confesses to them, but also recounts how a serial police torturer named Jon Burge framed him, and a racist ‘justice’ system sealed his fate." ―G. Flint Taylor, longtime attorney at the People’s Law Office in Chicago, who has represented numerous wrongfully convicted victims of Chicago police torture "This is a superb book about a tragedy in which legal ethics stood perversely in the way of justice, costing an innocent man more than a quarter century of his life." ―Rob Warden, codirector of Injustice Watch, Inc., and executive director emeritus of the Center on Wrongful Conviction, Northwestern University School of Law

A very compelling and dynamic story of one man's efforts to retain his dignity and humanity when subjected to an incomprehensible life event that turned out to be a very sad travesty of justice. The author is masterful at conveying the challenges the protagonist faces along with the impact it has on his soul and character. Not to be missed.

The only way the justice system will change is to change the minds of people entering the field. I couldn’t believe all the deliberate injustices this man suffered! Cudos to Berl Falbaum for pursing the truth to bring Alton’s story to light. It wouldn’t hurt if all police recruits, DAs, etc also had to read it.

The authors present a very serious problem with client-attorney privilege. Alton Logan, a 26-year-old African American was arrested for the shooting murder of a security guard at McDonalds in 1982 in Chicago's South side. He spent 26 years in prison for a crime that he did not commit. His two attorneys also had the real murderer as their client. The real murdered told them that Alton Logan was innocent. He even signed an affidavit stating the same and to be revealed at his death. Because of attorney client privilege, neither attorney made the information public until after the murdered had died. The first section of the book discusses that rule and why it is immoral. The aim of justice as per John Adams who became the second president, it is better to have many guilty to go free than to cause an innocent person to be put to death or imprisoned. So, this needs to be fixed and the authors have proposed solutions in the back of the book. Not only was that very important information withheld but so was the testimony of some witnesses who said that Mr. Logan was not the McDonald, the information about the gun and the fact that Mr. Logan never possessed a gun. To make it a perfect storm, his case at times involve prosecutors driven by ambition, mistreatment of his brother when he was arrested and the lack of a good investigation.Since Alton Logan dropped out of school he was unable to find a job. Later while in prison, he earned his GED and took some vocational education courses. But after he was released he still was unable to find work. That gap of 26 years on his resume was death of his job search. He is now getting help for his unemployment and other problems. But I think that much more help is needed. I would what the current program for high school drop outs and people are who have a prior record. So, this book brings up quite a few questions.I received an advanced copy of this book from the Publisher as a win from FirstReads but that in no way made a difference in my thoughts or feelings in this review

The book is very upsetting but worth reading. Alton Logan sat in prison for 26 years and one of the lawyers who knew Logan was innocent said he would talk about Logan's case from time to time throughout the years because it was "a cracking good story.""Legal Ethics" did not keep him in prison for 26 years. The coldness and cruelty of soulless human beings kept him there. And the attorneys who could have kept him from serving time have the nerve to do speaking engagements about his story. They should be ashamed to show themselves in public. They argue that they had no choice but to leave Logan to rot in jail because they wanted to follow the rules. That is like me walking past a child sitting in a locked car on a 100 degree day and deciding to let the child suffer and possible die because its against the rules/law to break into someone else's car. Rules are created to protect people. Logan was clearly the man who needed protecting in this situation.

Review

“In clear, concise chapters, Fincher, whose previous books include Leftover Women: The Resurgence of Gender Inequality in China, lays out the origins of the movement and its exponential growth, as well as the Chinese government’s violent attempts to extinguish it. The US president may be walloping China via trade war, but Leta Hong Fincher argues that the most existential threat to Xi Jinping’s regime comes from within.” —Claire Landsbaum, Vanity Fair “Hong Fincher explains that far from a small movement on the fringes of Chinese society, feminism is on the rise, from the burgeoning and ongoing #MeToo movement, to increasing calls for protections for survivors of domestic violence … to protests against workplace discrimination.” —Esther Wang, Jezebel “In Betraying Big Brother, journalist Leta Hong Fincher examines the feminist movement that’s rising in mainland China, and explores how the Feminist Five continue to covertly educate other women to confront and resist the country’s sexist policies.” —Evette Dionne, Bitch Media “A vital and necessary book in a world hostile to women and girls. Leta Hong Fincher’s account of a powerful network of activists is a foundational text on feminism in contemporary China, rich with scholarship and a grasp of history. It is a book to inspire and to guide all of us who insist on fighting the patriarchy globally.”—Mona Eltahawy, author of Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution “A provocative, sharp-edged account of Beijing’s push to cajole women to marry and fix the country’s sagging birth rates. A must-read for students of feminism.”—Mei Fong, author of One Child: The Story of China’s Most Radical Experiment “Writing with rigor, passion, and indignation, Hong Fincher introduces a group of Chinese feminist activists who refuse to be intimidated by China’s powerful patriarchal state. Offering a detailed account of the women’s critiques of increasing gender inequality in China, Betraying Big Brother is a singular account of a Chinese—and now global—movement that will not be silenced”—Rebecca E. Karl, author of Mao Zedong and China in the Twentieth Century “In her sprawling and detailed recent book, Betraying Big Brother, Fincher aims to tell the story of the women’s rights movement in China through their saga. Fincher bases her narrative on interviews with [the Feminist Five] and their allies, while supporting their stories with deep research into the roots of the government’s crackdown on feminism.” —Bookforum “In Betraying Big Brother, Leta Hong Fincher unlocks a fundamental truth: the subjugation of women is a key feature of authoritarian power. But in telling the harrowing story of the detention of China’s Feminist Five, she may also have discovered the strongman’s Achilles’ Heel: a broad-based feminist movement poses an existential threat to a patriarchal state.”—Rebecca MacKinnon, author of Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle for Internet Freedom “In her vivid and comprehensive work on China’s emerging feminist movement, Leta Hong Fincher explores the coming of age of a generation of young activists in an authoritarian state increasingly hostile to social protest. A must-read for all seeking to understand China’s feminist activists, hear their voices, and experience the day-to-day reality of their lives.” —Carl Minzner, author of End of an Era: How China’s Authoritarian Revival Is Undermining Its Rise “In Hong Fincher’s estimation, the official hostility toward feminists in China as part of a global rise of authoritarianism and backsliding of democracy will affect not only China’s women but its economic future and will have worldwide repercussions. This is a fascinating and earnest book.” —Publisher’s Weekly “Betraying Big Brother shows how the [feminist] movement has risen on social media and taken root abroad and in cities like Guangzhou. Hong Fincher argues that the Chinese Communist Party relies on patriarchal crackdowns for its post-Soviet survival—and, further, that ‘anyone concerned about rising authoritarianism globally needs to pay attention to what is happening in China.’” —Harvard Magazine “Brings the clash between China’s grassroots women’s movement and the state’s manipulation of women to life. Hong Fincher explores the struggles of young feminist activists who are detained and vilified for seemingly innocuous campaigns—handing out stickers warning against sexual harassment on public transport, or parading through the streets in soiled wedding dresses to protest domestic violence … A pertinent primer for anyone who wants to understand the aftermath of China’s one-child policy, and the country’s fledgling feminist movement.” —Katrina Hamlin, Reuters“In 2015, five young Chinese women—‘The Feminist Five’—were arrested for planning a public protest against sexual harassment. Through interviews with them, Fincher explores the origin and growth of China’s feminist movement—a greater threat to the Communist country, she argues, than President Trump's trade war.”—Newsweek “Fincher focuses on the history of a small group of female activists known as the Feminist Five , who have been hounded by the authorities for innocuous acts such as trying to hand out stickers on International Women’s Day. She argues persuasively that the activism the five awakened is already challenging the authoritarian state, with more and more women taking control of their bodies and rejecting ‘China’s patriarchal institutions of compulsory marriage and child-rearing.” —Keith B. Richburg, Washington Post “Through interviews with China’s famous Feminist Five, arrested in 2015 on orders of the Chinese government, and other leading Chinese activists Hong Fincher draws a portrait of the modern Chinese feminist movement and its pushback against interpersonal, governmental and digital control over their lives.” —Autostraddle

This is hard to read, not because it isn’t well-written, but because the subject matter is so rough. The author worked with and lent her personal strength to the incredibly courageous women (and men) who are the vanguard of this social movement. This is the story of true courage; standing up despite torture and loss of what little amount of freedom the government allows its citizens. Truly, it is the about freeing humanity from the oppression we impose upon each other. It is about human spirit, and the hope for our evolution. But it is difficult to read of the experiences these women undergo in their fight. It also highlights how critical a free press is to a healthy society, and how the current Chinese government conducts policing its citizenry in overt action and in constant pressure to conform in every way.

Dr. Leta Hong Fincher's book gives a complete picture of the modern-day feminist movement in China, while also putting it in the context of history. It's incredible to learn how gender equality played into the Communist revolution, especially in terms of the labor force, and Dr. Hong Fincher does an expert job of explaining how it was eventually minimized in favor of patriarchal culture and also authoritarianism.Parts of this book read like a spy novel. It's astonishing and often heartbreaking to hear how feminists in China have been treated by the state: not only surveilled and intimidated, but thrown in detention and tortured. Despite it all, they form inextricable bonds and help each other out in extraordinary ways. It is a sisterhood that transcends the trauma each has experienced.Above all else, Betraying Big Brother is an inspiring work. It shows the power of feminism within an oppressive, patriarchal regime. The Feminist Five and other activists (in and out of China) show what can be accomplished, as Li Maizi says in her mantra, with "perseverance, bravery, endurance."This is a necessary message for feminists and everyone who cares about human rights around the globe. Though authoritarian regimes are on the rise, there is tremendous strength in organizing and promoting gender equality. It threatens the patriarchal systems of power, which is why China has become so adamant about stamping out the threat by any means possible, from censorship to incarceration. This book details all of those ways, as well as the brilliant tactics the movement has used to fight back.Nevertheless, the feminists in China persist, as should the rest of us. Dr. Hong Fincher's book makes a great case for global feminism's potential for lasting change, and I am grateful to have read this work.

Leta Hong Finscher reports on the recent emergence of feminism in China, places this contemporary movement within the 20th century history of Chinese feminism, and analyzes the capacity for this movement to challenge the profound misogyny and patriarchy that bolster the authoritarian one party government of China. This is a book for our times. Leading the international conversation linking women's rights to the effort for justice, fairness, equality and democracy.

It was fascinating to learn about the rise of the Chinese feminist movement. As Dr. Leta Hong Fisher says, “it is critical that we bear witness to the persecution of feminist activists resisting authoritarian repression in China.”It is a must read!!

Stunning, moving, history in process -- great book.

Powerful, needed, compelling. Picked this up at a really busy time, yet cannot stop reading it! Very well written.

Have to say, Leta Hong Fincher's Betraying Big Brother was a powerful, emotionally taxing, and awe-inspiring book to read. I'm enthralled with the Feminist Five, think Li Maizi is truly badass, and was heartbroken to read about her own experiences with sexual assault in the context of the repression Chinese feminist activists have faced over the years. That Hong Fincher could put together this book, do her interviews, and excoriate the People's Republic of China and Pooh Bear Xi in such an unflinching way. Just, wow!Just a couple of poignant quotes from Betraying Big Brother (not to give too much away). One quote I know to be true in social justice movements in general: "Misogyny has no political boundaries; supposedly progressive, male activists have throughout history revealed deep-rooted sexism by silencing, belittling, and even abusing the women within their own civil rights movements." Most definitely!I didn't know this, though. The "growing number of Chinese women resisting marriage and childbearing pose a challenge to...the Party's security apparatus(')" key method for keeping trouble-makers in line, "threatening [their] spouses, parents and children..." Connecting population policies to the political repression of Chinese feminism and feminists. Big Brother, indeed! These accounts from activists are incredibly well written, but also gut-wrenching. But with the judicious arc of the universe, the demographic changes are on the side of young, educated Chinese women. "The more women are...independent and beholden to no one, the more they can resist and disrupt the patriarchal authoritarian order."So, many, many thanks to Leta Hong Fincher for this book! It has given me a deeper glimpse into a world I would otherwise only know bits and piece of from a few friends and from the BBC. I think we all need to be Betraying Big Brother, whenever and however we can.
