What Is the Story of Hello Kitty?   On November 23, 2016, Masao Gunji achieved a Guinness World Record. What is his record? The world’s largest Hello Kitty collection!   Gunji, who lives in Japan, has 5,169 Hello Kitty items. He has Hello Kitty plush toys, crystal figures, clocks, watches, and lamps. His collection also includes a bowling pin, a toaster, a coffee maker, a motorcycle helmet, and a ukulele. If something has Hello Kitty on it, then Gunji probably owns it.   After thirty-five years of collecting, the Hello Kitty items fill Gunji’s pink house. Anytime he or his wife see something with Hello Kitty on it, they buy it. Gunji credits his family and neighbors with encouraging him to apply for the world record and helping him count all the Hello Kitty items he owns. People like to stop by and visit his collection, making his home a kind of neighborhood hangout spot. Gunji thinks looking at all of his Hello Kitty things helps them relax.   But why Hello Kitty? What does Gunji love about her so much?   “The reason I like Hello Kitty is because of her expression; for some reason when I’m sad, she looks a bit sad as well, and when I am happy, she looks happy.”   Gunji isn’t the only person who feels this way. The design of Hello Kitty is simple, but it is enough to bring joy to millions. A glimpse of Hello Kitty can make anyone’s day a bit brighter. The motto of Sanrio, the company that introduced Hello Kitty in 1974, is: “small gift, big smile.” And for over forty years, Hello Kitty has brought a smile to so many people.   Some people think Hello Kitty is just a cute little cat. But Hello Kitty is much more than a cartoon character. She has been loved by generations of families, from grandparents and parents to small children. She brings people together. Hello Kitty looks simple. But she is also complicated. And maybe that is why she has remained popular for so long.    Chapter 1: Sanrio      The story of Hello Kitty begins with Shintaro Tsuji, the founder of Sanrio. He was born in 1927 in Yamanashi, Japan. Two moments from his childhood left a lasting impression on him: Once, his teacher asked him to help give out food and clothing to people in the town who had none. He was struck by how happy other people were to receive things that seemed so simple to him. Another time, he gave some of his trading cards to a boy he knew. The boy was delighted, and Tsuji realized that even small gifts can bring great joy. He understood how easy it could be to make someone happy.   Tsuji’s life changed when he was a young teenager and his mother passed away. He drifted into the world of books. He loved poetry and literature, especially the magical world of Greek mythology.   Tsuji went to college and studied chemistry. After graduating, he got a job with the local government. In August 1960, he quit his job and started his own business, the Yamanashi Silk Center.   Tsuji and his employees traveled around Japan, selling silk items from his home state of Yamanashi. In 1962, the company decided to sell rubber beach sandals, too. Many businesses sold these, so Tsuji tried to make his different by putting a small flower on each. The sandals sold well. The company even received orders from outside Japan! Tsuji tried putting strawberry designs on other usually plain products, like wallets and slippers. And these things were also successful. He realized that just by adding a simple decoration to something so ordinary, he could increase sales.   Tsuji hired artists to draw characters to put on his items. He also tried to sell some American items in Japan, such as Barbie dolls and Hallmark cards. Neither was successful, though. The Barbie dolls were too expensive, and the Hallmark cards had American designs that didn’t appeal to Japanese customers.   The failures of these projects taught Tsuji to focus on things that were right for the Japanese market. He thought that the company should sell small gifts that people could give one another to show friendship, not just for special occasions. He didn’t want them to be too inexpensive. But if they cost too much, people might not buy them at all. He finally settled on items that he believed schoolchildren could afford to buy and give to their friends.   Tsuji’s first store was called Shinjuku Gift Gate. It opened in Tokyo, Japan, in 1971.   Tsuji decided the company might need a new name: something easy to say and remember. He thought it should be appealing and yet have a deeper meaning. He remembered how the world’s three earliest great civilizations were established on rivers: Babylon began near the Tigris River, Egypt along the Nile River, and China on the Yellow River. He decided to use the concepts of “three” and “river” for his store’s name. San is the way to spell the Japanese and Chinese word for three using the Western alphabet. Río is the Spanish word for river. In 1973, the company officially changed its name to Sanrio.   Another major change was just around the corner for Sanrio: the introduction of their biggest star.   Chapter 2: Hello, Hello Kitty      Throughout the 1960s, Tsuji had paid well-known cartoonists to use their characters on Sanrio products. But he wanted Sanrio to create its own characters. He wanted to have his own designers.   Tsuji didn’t want Sanrio gifts to be too expensive. He wanted kids to be able to buy them as small treats. That meant he needed designs that would appeal to young people. Tsuji had had success by putting strawberry designs on products. Then he tried cherries—but no one bought those items! He realized it was time to try something new. All children seemed to like animals, so he suggested that his artists draw animal characters. Tsuji knew from talking to kids that their favorite animals were dogs, cats, and bears. But Snoopy, the dog from the Peanuts comic strip, was already very popular in Japan. So was Winnie-the-Pooh, the British bear. That left cats. Tsuji thought a cat might be a successful character.   The Sanrio designers worked hard to create new characters. They drew a bunny and mouse pair named Bunny and Matty. They also created two friends named Patty and Jimmy. They looked fine, but they didn’t become very popular for Sanrio.   Then in 1974, one designer brought Tsuji a new drawing of a character she called Kitty White. Kitty White had a very large head and a small body. She had a yellow nose, two black dots for eyes, and a red bow tilted over her left ear. She wore blue overalls and sat sideways with her face turned toward viewers. There was a small bottle of milk with a straw next to her on one side and a fishbowl with a red fish on her other side.   Tsuji thought the drawing was “just okay” but decided they would use it anyway. He didn’t expect it to be something special.   The drawing of Kitty White appeared on a see-through coin purse in 1975, with “Hello!” printed in red letters above her. Hello was written in English because British words and styles were very popular in Japan at that time. The coin purse cost 240 Japanese yen. That would have been less than one US dollar. It was something kids could easily afford to buy.   The coin purse sold well. Sanrio made more products with Hello Kitty on them. In most of the drawings, she was shown sitting in the same sideways pose, her face turned forward. But in others, she had different items and wore different clothes.   What made Hello Kitty so successful? Of course, she was cute. But there was something else: She was in the right place at the right time.   In the early 1970s, young girls in Japan began to change their handwriting. They started to exaggerate the roundness of the characters they wrote and added little touches to them, such as hearts and flowers. When asked why they liked writing that way, they said they thought it looked “cute.”   Japanese kids, especially middle-school and high-school girls, began to use the word kawaii (say: KUH-why-i) to describe anything cute. Kawaii came from the words kawayushi and kawayui, which mainly means “shy or embarrassed” but also “small, pitiful, darling, lovable.” Kawaii became a style. Wearing childish clothes or speaking in baby talk was considered kawaii.   Hello Kitty was the perfect kawaii creation. She was round and soft. She had short arms and legs. She looked like she might need a bit of help. She was like a baby animal. People wanted to take care of her. An ordinary product, like a notepad, became kawaii with a picture of Hello Kitty on it.    There was another important reason why Hello Kitty became such a success in the early 1970s: Japan’s economy was growing at that time. Businesses were doing well. People had money to spend on extras. Parents gave their children allowances to buy whatever they liked. Grandparents gave kids money on holidays or birthdays. Many Japanese children in the 1970s could easily afford to buy a Hello Kitty item.   Sanrio made more products with Hello Kitty on them: clocks, dolls, and other small toys. Hello Kitty began to wear different clothes, and she sometimes stood and faced fully forward. The new Hello Kitty products sold well. Sanrio doubled its sales in 1975.   Tsuji called the land where all of his characters lived the Strawberry Kingdom. The company began to publish Strawberry News, a magazine about Sanrio characters. Fans learned about new Hello Kitty products, where they could buy them, and how to enter contests. They wrote letters to the magazine about how much they loved Hello Kitty.   A Sanrio tradition also started in 1975. A sales clerk at a Sanrio store was wrapping up a gift for a customer. She wanted to add a little something to the package. She noticed a small Hello Kitty bell on the store Christmas tree and tied it onto the customer’s package. The customer was delighted. The sales clerk began to add small bells to all of their customers’ packages.   Tsuji heard about this and thought it was a wonderful idea. It truly fit in with the company’s “small gift, big smile” belief. He told all Sanrio stores to start adding tiny ornaments—or trinkets—to their customers’ purchases. The tradition still continues today, and Sanrio fans look forward to receiving their small, collectible souvenirs.    In 1976, other companies began to pay Sanrio a fee to put the Hello Kitty character on their products. Now there were even more Hello Kitty things to buy. Sanrio’s sales doubled again.   Hello Kitty was a success. But who was she?

About the Author

Jenn and Ken Visocky O'Grady are authors, designers, and educators whose work has been featured in numerous books and creative industry publications. Jenn is a professor at Cleveland State University, a public research university where for nearly two decades she has dedicated herself to providing access and opportunity to a diverse group of aspiring creatives. Well-written and insightful pieces from the pages of Fangoria magazine (and you thought it was just a collection of gory photographs!) shed new light on the works of Stephen King and Clive Barker, arguably the two most popular--and yet diverse--modern writers of horror. How well you enjoy this book depends largely on how much you appreciate the work of the authors. For my part, the pieces on Clive Barker's films "Lord Of Illusions" and especially "Nightbreed" are a little too fawning in tone for two such disposable works; ditto the piece on King's directorial debut (and hopefully finale) "Maximum Overdrive." But devoted fans and aspiring writers alike should find plenty of insight into both King and Barker's work methods and even some new perspectives on well-known and much-loved works. I would have appreciated a more critical analysis, but this book is at least a big step up from, say, a fan-club newsletter.

In Braj, in north India, she relates immersive reconstructions of stories from Krishna's life which pilgrims re-enact. Finally, she traces the journey made by Ram as he travelled from Ayodhya in the north to Lanka (presumed to be present-day Sri Lanka) in the south, navigating the length of the country.Eck's book conclusively shows that India is shaped not by the modern notion of a nation-state, "but by the extensive and intricate interrelation of geography and mythology (around rivers, shores, mountains, forests) that has produced this vast landscape of tirthas". Pandit Nehru said this even more authoritatively in his historic address at AICC's Madurai session in October 1961: "India has, for ages past, been a country of pilgrimages. All over the country, you find these ancient places, from Badrinath, Kedarnath and Amarnath, high up in the snowy Himalayas down to Kanyakumari in the south. What has drawn our people from the south to the north and from the north to the south in these great pilgrimages? It is the feeling of one country and one culture."The Spirit of India is, in fact, the Idea of India. You cannot even begin to understand India without acknowledging, experiencing and comprehending its sacredness-that is, without becoming a pilgrim yourself. Whether you go to Girnar,Chisti's Dargah in Ajmer, or Kanyakumari, whether you bathe in the Holy Ganga or in the "tirthas of the heart" ,to reach the shores of after-life, is up to you.In closing, the idea of Indian sacredness is not some western concept grafted on to the subcontinent in a fit of mystical Orientalism: it is instead an idea central to India's mythological conception of itself, which "continues to anchor millions of people in the imagined landscape of their country". Hindu mythology consistently visualises India as a spiritually charged and "living landscape in which mountains, rivers, forests and villages are elaborately linked to the stories of the gods and heroes. The land bears traces of the gods and the footprints of the heroes. Every place has its story and, conversely, every story in the vast storehouse of myth and legend has its place ... In this mental map, geography is overlaid with layer upon layer of story."As Professor Eck writes in her conclusion: "The affirmation of the everywhere of the sacred - this is the peculiar genius of the theology given expression in the landscape of India."

Diana Eck's latest book is in the line of her first, rightly celebrated, description of Kashi (Benares) as the "City of Light", but with twenty or thirty years of research added. Admittedly, this is not a book for beginners. It presupposes at least some basic knowledge of the Indian "Weltanschaung" : if you have no idea who Krishna, Rama or Shiva are, you are unlikely to be able to enjoy Diana Eck's superbly perceptive description of what she calls the sacred geography of India. She means by that the subtle connexion between the geographical landscape, the history of certain famous places - Ayodhya for instance - and the underlying religious visions of a sub-continent where ever year tens of millions of pilgrims travel to what we would call holy places. Diana Eck talks from experience: it is obvious from her descriptions that she has been there and the reader is thus treated to a superb mixture of impressive erudition with practical experience. Furthermore the author is very good at describing what she saw: her writing is clear and elegant, never repetitive, yet precise. The book is divided by divinities, so to speak: Shiva's pilgrimages and sacred lanscape, Vishnu, Devi, Krishna, Rama, etc. Diana Eck deals splendidly with the complexity - and the sheer volume - of information available. She is sometimes a little light footed where one would have expected less diplomacy: for example, the scandalous neglect of the Indian government(s) for their "sacred" rivers, most of which are sewers, totally poluted, filled with human and industrial waste, endangering the life of the worshippers who bathe in them is evoked several times, but one would have expected a stronger call for action. But these are minor deficiencies in an otherwise superb book. Anyone with an interest in India should read it and it is sure to remain THE reference on this subject for many years.

Diana Eck is one of there world's preeminent Indologist and it shows in this tour de force. Her use of geography as the literary map to introduce the complex collection of religions we call Hinduism is a wonderful guide to better understand the nuances of the non-Muslim religions of the sub-continent.It was my guide when I visited northern India in Jan 2015 and southern India in Aug 2015. I look forward to my 2018 trip to Gujarat and Karnataka, where I expect this book to provide much needed geohistorical backdrops to why the locals believe as they do.

This is a terrific book for multiple reasons. The first is the meticulous, intense research done by the author over her lifetime. It brings India alive in a way I have never seen or experienced before. Despite being brought up in a Hindu family in India, knowledge of Hindu epics via both my parents and the television, this book added greatly to my understanding of India and Hinduism.

This exploraton of India's sacred sites and their interconnectedness takes an academic approach so is sometimes over-long and repetitive but is readable and thorough. Diana Eck obviously has a deep understanding of and respect for the Hindu tradition so there is also real spiritual insight to be found amongst the background and myths associated with India's many sacred sites and pilgrimages. It has suggested some new destinations to me for my next trip to India and has deepened my understanding of many stories and places that were already familiar. It's probably not the best book as an introduction to India's sacred places but is rewarding for anyone who wants to look deeper into the fascinating mythology that is still part of living reality and daily inspiration for many Indians (and quite a few westerners!)

Very disappointed. Do NOT buy the Classic Reprint Series of this book, it is nothing more than a poor quality scan of each page of the original book. The pages are not straight nor do the even fill the page. Pictures are dark, text is unclear. Not worth the paper it is printed on, will be sending it back.

I couldn't believe it when I saw that this cookbook was available as a "new" book (authentic reproduction) again. I received it - probably as a birthday gift? I don't remember - when I was a young child, about 50 years ago. I have always been a cookbook reader, and I spent many happy hours as a child reading this book. So when I saw that it was available again, I eagerly bought a copy for the sake of nostalgia.As an object of nostalgia, I would rate it 5 stars. It looks exactly like the original, and has the same durable and convenient hardcover spiral binding that I remember. Although if you look carefully, you can tell that the cover is from a "photo of a photo," as the image isn't quite as crisp as an original would be. Also, the green glossy material used on the inside of the front & back covers was not in the original. However, everything else about the book is a perfect reproduction.As a 21st-century cookbook for children to use, I'd probably give it only 3 stars. There is a lot about cooking that has changed in the 60 years since this book was first published:* Our understanding of nutrition has improved significantly* We encounter a greater variety of ingredients, especially fresh produce, in our stores* Our food landscape has been enriched by many contributions from nearly every continent and every corner of the earth (I had definitely never heard of hummus or chiles rellenos when I used to read this book on lazy summer afternoons), and* Rather than seeing canned/highly processed foods as exciting miracles of modern culinary technology, we now see them as the less healthy and less tasty versions of food.This cookbook is definitely rooted in the food styles, tastes and knowledge of its mid-20th-century era.That being said, this was a very, VERY good children's cookbook for its era. The recipes are creative, attractive, and often whimsical. There is a LOT of information for a budding cook who doesn't want to just learn a particular recipe, but actually wants to learn how to cook - such as cooking methods and terminology, types of utensils, safety guidelines. It piques the interest through extras like the illustrations (including many gorgeous full-page color glossy photos of finished recipes) and the sidebar tips from the 12 kids who were the "Junior Testers" of all the recipes in the book.So, bottom line:1. If you are an adult who was in love with this book as a kid, buy it.2. If you are thinking of buying it for a child in your life today, I would say go ahead and buy it for its instructional value in the basics of cooking, but give the child a more contemporary children's cookbook at the same time.

My grandma's was falling out of the binding and she could find the chocolate chip cookies with her eyes closed. But this one was in great condition, so I guess I'll have more time to use it to rags. The recipes are cute and imaginative, fairly simple but delicious. The kitchen tips and advice are stellar for any age. How to set the table? It’s here. How to scramble eggs? Also here. Measuring, stirring, meal prep are all described and illustrated in a most kid friendly format.It’s safe; parental permission and supervision is invoked whenever heat or knives are involved.May I recommend the chocolate pudding? It’s the most stained page in my copy...I just purchased the newest edition for my seven year old grandson. I was thrilled that the cover is exactly the same as mine (though cleaner), and I hope it gives him the beginning of the same lifelong enjoyment of cooking as it gave me.

I had a first edition of this cookbook as a little girl. I have no clue whatever happened to that book, but I am so happy that I found this one. I gave it to my grandkids to have at my home for cooking with grandma. They have all penciled in their names on the pages that they want to cook from with grandma. The book only have drawings rather than photos, but that is fine as the recipes are not all that difficult and it just makes in more exciting for kids to see what the real deal looks like in the end.

She loved the gift and together with her mother, has prepared a couple of the recipes in this book. she said it was really easy to read and understand, and it gave her a list of supplies that was required to make each recipe. The pictures are colorful which makes it even more interesting and eye catching. I, a senior lady, still have my original cookbook just like this which was given to me by my deceased mother. As a child, I loved using it and cooking with my mother's help.

I love to bake and to have choices, and this book allows me to do both. There is a lot of tips and helpful hints, plus the “scaled down equipment” that you will need. There are sweet and savory recipes, so many to choose from, I can’t wait to start baking. If you love to bake and don’t want to make “full” recipes, I would suggest on getting this cookbook.

I received this book as a gift as I had high hopes for small batch baking. I have now made a number of the recipes most of which were not satisfactory in my opinion. I am NOT a novice baker, I have baked for years and am used to complicated recipes as well as simple. Thus I thought these should work but each one I have tried I questioned the measurements.for example, the vanilla cupcakes and the strawberry buttercream layer cake. Great ideas, poor in application. Both of the cakes turned out incredibly dense and greasy I believe she adds way too much butter as neither turned out light and fluffy and there was an excess of grease, especially around the cupcakes. The frostings also were loaded with butter and did not hold up light and fluffy like frosting should. I might expect something like this in an alternative ingredient recipe but this is using standard baking ingredients, all which I used and followed her instructions to the letter, only to have disappointing results. The flavors were ok but nothing to write home about.I think the people who have reviewed the book haven't made the recipes at all thus the reviews are misleading to those who would want the purchase the book. Had I known these things I known these things I would not have put it on my gift idea list.I am scared to try any other cakes or what are supposed to be fluffy baked goods because she will probably want nearly a cup of butter for a small batch!Now, the scone recipe was decent and the blueberry muffins I would make again, but I am hesitant about just about anything else as I've had too many fails vs successes and this is not, I repeat to user error as I am not new to baking.I also have now tried two of the biscuit recipes and they were good, no problems but due to the experience of greasy everything else I always cut out at least 1 TBS of butter and they worked out just fine. Besides, on biscuits you add more butter once cooked anyways!And, if you like baking books with actual photos then this is also not for you, you would think in this type of book photos would be had but there are none other than the ones at the beginning of each chapter. Huge disappointment.So if you are interested, save yourself the trouble and find another small batch book or just try from her blog but do so with great caution and concern. OR try halving a recipe yourself, you'd probably get better results than her talking about how expertly she did this when in fact, its quite horrible.Would I recommend the book? No.

There is no table of contents or index. How can i find a specific recipe? Do I really have to go through all 100 pages?

I'm loving small batch cooking and baking and this is a wonderful cookbook! I've already tried two recipes and they both came out perfectly. I really like the tips at the end of the recipes. Can't wait to try more recipes!

This is a great cookbook if you are baking for one or two. I bought a 6 inch pie pan at the same time I bought the book. Several of the recipes can use small standard size pans, but the pie pan is hard to find where I live. If I was giving this book as a gift I would give it with the 6 inch pie pan.

Love the recipes. Already made the orange bundt cake, both of the cheesecake recipes and the cinnamon rolls. I was surprised that the small size recipes tasted so good and pretty easy to make as well. I've started baking again because I no longer have so much left over.

This is the perfect book for small batch baking for two. No worrying about trying to cut recipes in half ,this book is perfect. Recipes are simply written, instructions well explained. Would recommend this book .

Such a great addition to my collection. I am definitely a novice baker, and the helpful hints were fantastic! The author/baker was soooo helpful! I have enjoyed trying the different recipes! They are so easy to follow. I really appreciate the fact that everything is cut down, which makes cooking for two a breeze.I highly recommend this book and have been telling everyone about it!

I LOVE this cookbook. The idea behind it is awesome. I'm never wanting to bake a whole mess of things for just two people!
